@Tesh I understadn I hope you get time to finish him, I was gonna post my Cullen one, but now since I've improved I'm a bit embarrassed of it haha.

I am the other way, checking to see if everything is correct all the time "oh no, that brush stroke went a lil bit too far". But trying to let it go a bit, and just go for it instead hehe. I really do enjoy painting though, I was afraid I was gonna get bored after a few hours, but I've kind of been up all nights just painting hehe.

@ Tesh: oh my, your painting looks gorgeous! What's on it you consider off actually?

Thanks for the inking advice :)

@ Shantia: still on the Solas portrait?

@Tesh: question, what's the file size of the painting you're doing...? I scan one of my drawing with the best resolution I can get (1200 dpi with my scanner). And the file size is HUGE around 300 Mb. Now I works on like 30% Zoom out. Should I let this file size & resize later or should I just resize??

@ Ceru

Haha, glad you like the portrait so far :) I am unhappy with the jawline and chin. There are other things as well, but I think I cannot do any better on those.

I am not exactly sure what the size of my original is O.o It started off as a 4x6 in 300dpi document, but I changed canvas size a few times. I usually start off with 6x9 in 300dpi at the rough sketch phase, and then resize to 12x18 in before refining.

@ Shantia

Oh, I know what you mean about older drawings :) I cringe at some of my older pieces. But, hey, they were part of the process :) You are doing great, and I am happy to see you are having fun :)

@Tesh: About chin & jawline, honestly I can't spot the problem... It's surely Cullen tho

@Shantia: Glad that you like drawing & painting.

Ouch, inking is HELLISHLY difficult...

WIP, pauldron needs re-working. This is anatomy study went wrong... It was supposed to be shirtless Cullen... Then the bones went all wrong & finally it becomes this... Is this Cullen or Alistair, I don't even know anymore... :crying:

Thanks to MelissaGT for the screenshot (for now, I only copy existing screenshots/photos... but one day, I'll try to draw something from scratch)2015-014.jpg

@ Ceru

No shirtless Cullen for us? He's still dreamy, though  And your lines look really clean, so it was well worth the effort :)

@ Morlanwen

Actually, you might find using a grid helpful (just thought about it since you were using that paper). You can generate a grid on top of your reference as well as your drawing paper. Then you can reproduce the reference one square at a time within the grid. It's a method that is highly effective at accurate reproduction :)

Okay I admit, first time drawing Cullen I also draw him using block papers & rulers.

I get several questions about drawings & arts in general. Any opinion is welcome :)

1. The drawing that I made on Cullen above, if it's to be coloured, should I try to render it 3D or just keep it simple in 2D cartoon style? I can imagine some colour schemes but it's the rendering that's confusing.

2. People told me not to work with colour until I can master shadows & lighting & values in greyscale. But they also say that each piece must be finished before moving on the next. Do you guys recommend me to keep all those drawings (lines only) for colouring later (I don't know when, maybe after learning the theory of colour?), or just colour each one that I draw & worth keeping & learn from experience?

Thanks in advance!

Ceru, if you were to go to art school you would learn drawing shapes and color theory in parallel. As far as drawing is concerned, you would start with lines, then planar subdivision, and finally shading.

Since the lines on your drawings are so strong, they would look best if colored in a cartoonish style. Hard edges and realism do not mix. But cartoonish style does not equal flat. You can still create depth, though it will be simplified.

And no, you do not need to finish every drawing before moving on to the next. Your sketchbook will contain a range of pieces, starting with rough lines, all the way to very detailed work.

I've never been in artschool or any other drawing classes so I don't know how things work actually, thanks for the answer Tesh

you were in artschool? Wow! That's something.

About the lines so strong/not strong, it's on separate layer on photoshop, guess that I can always remove that if it was to be a more realist one. But you're right, cartoon style might be better for that one.

Thanks

I've been taking art classes since I was 12, but it was always in parallel to school. I attended an art college for concept art with half the normal course load for a semester while working on my graduate diploma full time. I had to give it up, however, as I got sick. I simply could not keep up the pace - leaving at 8 am, and returning at 11 pm every day.

Not my brightest plan - to work on two diplomas at the same time - but I learned a lot during that one semester.

If only I had listened in art class ... but I was too busy reading :/ .. and it was not art school, just one hour/week  between 11 years old and 15 years old ...
Two diplomas at the same time? You do not mind if I call you 'crazy' ? (only one is hard to get, but two ? you ARE crazy -in a good way ;) )

I need to buy some paper, completely white, and a pen, and a ruber and .. goddess, what have I got myself involved in ? ^_^

And that 's it for today .. well, for yesterday ... well, for saturday I mean (01:48 sunday morning here)

Spoiler

@ Morlanwen

He looks adorable :) Like the kind of guy you'd take home to meet your parents :)

Me, crazy? Hehe... Maybe just a little :P This is what happens when you are torn between what you are told is right and what you really want. Science vs art. A comfortable life vs living as a bum under a bridge :P

@ Morlanwen: Wow you've improved a lot too! Love how you draw the nose & the lips & eyes... I want to kiss that drawing :P

Okaaay, let's admit, Cullen's the kind of guy that girls can bring home to introduce to parents... :P

@ Tesh: you're really courageous to do the double degree on different fields. I did double degree last year in Master but it was like 2 science degree (Engineering Degree in Material Science + Master of Research in Biomedical Engineering) so it was much easier to manage.

Well, at least that 1 semester you're there doesn't seem to be a waste I hope

@Morlanwen & Tesh: oh yeah, talking about drawing supplies... what kind of things do you guys suggest for beginners? I still only have the very basic stuffs:

- kneaded eraser (gomme pain de mie je crois en français)

- pencils: 2B, HB, 2H

- sketchbook (cheapest one I can found in Cultura) + used papers

- pencil sharpener (@Morlanwen: don't buy the one from Auchan it's crappy really... <_<  Mine got dead in less than one month)

I was also thinking on your remark Tesh, about not to use fingers for smudging. I saw a kind of paper stick for it in store, so we're supposed to use that for smudging?

For me (biggest beginner ever) it will be oooold paper. Not old in the sense "this was used and re-used" but old paper I used when I was in schoold ( for physics/chemistry and biology classes ...when I bought this paper, the prices were still in francs, not in euros ^^). Grid paper is fine, but only for wrinting ;)

Since I only have a mechanical pencil and unknown pencils (they are pretty tho, but 2H? HB? 2B? 3B? ) I will buy 'real' ones.

I still have an old pencil sharpener (I was what? 7 or 8 yo when I got it... and Auchan is the worst retailer ever ... I'm 'lucky', just 10 km from home there is a huge stationery shop - this is where boyfriend buy his .. huu ... 'calames' for calligraphy (once again, I can't find a translation: This is 'calames')  and will ask my grandma if she still have my grandpa's ...huuu ... I don't know the word... even in french, it was like pencils, completely white, it looked like paper, like a rubber but not really :/ He used those things when he was an engineering draughtsman.

@ Ceru

Paper stick = blending stick, and yes, that is what you use for blending. You gradually peel the bottom off, when it becomes dirty. I have rarely used blending sticks, since I am more comfortable with a paper towel and cue tips, so there is not much I can say on how to use them the right way  <_<

For drawing and sketching, you are off to a good start. Make sure you have a good hard eraser as well. You can either get one shaped like a pen (just for comfort), or a blocky one.

You could also get some col-erase pencils. These erase very easily, and are ideal for laying down a rough sketch before refining with ink (or pencil, for that matter).

@Tesh: Well, that's the mystery of life waiting to be discovered - how to use blending stick...

Can't wait, I just got one yesterday ^_^

@Tesh: Oooh the pauldron fur looks so soft! He seems cuddly

Yay for holiday ^_^

CuriousArtemis' Auren Lavellan (WIP Rough Sketch). Normally this is for his 5K celebration banner pic but I think that I won't be able to finish that in time... (and all my Cullen drawing needs colouring. So much to do, so little time :( )

Is this Arti's Elf that looks like a cute girl? :) I like the lineart so far :)

As for Cullen, I'll add a little twist to the portrait, even if it will not be completely finished for 5k :) I'll just update later :)

That's actually a guy, but Arty wants him to look androgynous so I tried to make the neck smaller & rounded all the angles. That's actually his character from Dragon Dogma, mixed with DA:I vallaslin etc.

I really think I can't do a good job drawing other people's characters, I mean when I'm drawing Cullen badly no one will protest. But people often put their heart into the CC and it's quite bad not to do justice to it. Well... Anyway it's sprayed fixed now on the paper so no more changing <_<

And Tesh, at this rate you'll never have anything finished, always something more isn't it?

OoOOoo I looooove to paint androgynous characters :D Is it a girl? Is it a guy? Who cares? They're hot! :D I am sure Arti will love the drawing :)

No, technically, I never finish anything. Even after I put my signature on a drawing, I still have to fight the urge to make more adjustments :P But, I promise, I will stop myself tomorrow the latest. There is not much left - just refine the stubble, and add some extra surprise details :)

He saw it already, got a hard time choosing the Vallaslin, between RP reason (Hunter = Andruil) & Pretty Vallaslin (Mythal or Ghilan'nain). Tried to make him holding the bow in front but then the hand got too weird, so bow at the back.

Ah ah ah, that's the dilemma of an artist, you would never finish anything.

Is this also possible for oil painting? I heard that it's quite easy since the canvas can be painted all white once again :D

Well, in my untrained eyes your Cullen seems finished already so...
