You did a really good job on the lines. Very clean ![]()
The only thing I would mention is that if you only do line art, the nose is generally emphasized with a single line on the side where the shadow falls. If you want to suggest the nose with two lines, then the edge that falls in the light should be traced very lightly.
Take a look at these illustrations by Disney:

I didn't know that, thanks! *correcting...*
Anyway Flynn's my favourite character in Rapunzel, just after Pascal!
So you're on holiday now? ![]()
Not yet, leaving on Thursday
At the rate that the Cullen Thread is going, I might have to ask R2 to add my contributions for me. I won't have access to a computer while I'll be away.
Rapunzel is awesome
I think I must have watched it 6 times... Disney is a great source of reference for cartooning. Marvel is awesome for comic book style and inking
Hoho Rapunzel's one of my favourite Disney. TBH I love the songs & my room mate back in college could sing all the songs. When they release that thousands of flying lantern it was magic. ![]()
Brave is also really great, I wonder how they ever managed to make those curly hairs altogether...
A question actually: how to do a "painting study"? For the colour I mean. Someone suggested to make a thumbnail of a good painting (Old Masters etc). However what's I'm supposed to do? Make a small "just colour" & ignore the exact shape or make a copy with exact shape etc?
Or should I try to study colour & lighting from real life instead?
This is so confusing ![]()
I really need to work on colour since everytime I tried to colour my drawing, any drawing, I went blank. I don't know how to do that... Someone suggested to do this exercise and went away before I could ask her what's that exactly.
Do thumbnails
Rectangles of 3x6 cm should be enough. Don't worry about the shapes, just block in the colours.
Study from real life is always good ![]()
And keep a colour wheel handy, to pick your colours appropriately ![]()
Edit: I just saw this on DevArt, and I thought the colours were absolutely lovely. This might be worth studying (by loish):

Thanks ![]()
Which medium do you suggest? If I'm going to do Real Life (then outside too) it must be something portable... Hmm... coloured pencil is a good idea or not? Or I just take the photo & do it on photoshop?
If you are going outside, coloured pencils are pretty good. If you have a good camera, take some photos, and try to recreate the colours in PS.
My dream is to take my laptop and a smaller tablet around with me to draw outside
Hmm... maybe I should buy a Bamboo, since I finally have a laptop powerful enough to run PS smoothly.

Errr... how to say this, you might want to reconsider that? I mean, the first sketch book I ever own in my life went into the lake. I blame those gooses.
But well, I could have accident with coffees so... ![]()
Why buying a bamboo when you already get an intuos? ![]()
Intuous is large
About 12 inch diagonal for the work surface alone, plus the edge of the tablet. A bamboo the size of my laptop would be perfect.
Thank you for the warning, though
I know what it means to have nature interfere with your art. But in my case, it always happened indoors... My old cat sat on so many of my sketches. He scratched quite a few, and barfed on some of them as well. My younger cat sat with his dirty butt on one of my sketches. So, yeah... No coffee stains, but oh so much worse
You're doing great work!
Here is anm update on my own character, I havent had any time to paint in awhiel so I haven't gotten very far ![]()

@Morlanwen: wow that's amazing! She's so hot in your drawing... You've improved so much ![]()
I really love how you do the hair & the eyes & the nose. Wow...
*Warden Greatly Approves*
@ Shantia: it looks much more 3D now, she looks good ![]()
Can't wait to see it finished.
@Tesh: Wow you've got a very big one there... Ain't it difficult to use a bigger one than a smaller one? Guess that if you're used to working big maybe it's easier? I got a small model so it's around 12.6 inch length total (6*4 inch active area). That one's as large as a laptop so maybe it's quite easy to bring everywhere.
How are you going to manage with the sun? Sometimes it's hard to see the screen under the sun no?
In any case that surely sounds fun, just not for me bringing computer to work outside. I learn from that sketchbook-in-a-lake (thanks, Mother Goose
). Please tell me how it turns out drawing outside
Keep it on everyone, we're all progressing apparently ![]()
@ Shantia
She looks beautiful
And a little badass
What kind of hair style will she have? A pixie cut? I loooove pixie cuts
@ Morlanwen
That's our Morrigan alright
You know what would make things pop a little? If you would use an eraser to gently go over the areas where there are highlights. A kneaded eraser would work best, since you can control its shape, but a regular eraser would do the trick as well.
@ Ceru
Yes, I work best with large surface areas - both paper and canvas. That's why I have a larger Intuos model
As for sun glare, I can just sit under a tree
We have plenty where I live. Mountains of them
But I need to get a smaller tablet first. Hmmm... We have one at work, actually, but the pen is busted. I wonder whether it would work with my own pen? My supervisor would not mind if I'd borrow it.
@Tesh: good ideas for the trees. Last time I tried to draw landscape in RL the sun was hellish since it change every 5 minutes so the lighting change all the time ![]()
Maybe under a tree it's more stable. I'll wait spring tho, it's still too cold for now on ![]()
@Ceru thank you!
@Morlanwen looking great.
@Tesh thanks, I love pixie cuts too, but I already have a hair style in mind, it will be medium to long hair and she will have short bangs, I plan to do a sheet with different hairstyles she "likes".
Got a bit further but been too lazy to blend it all yet.

@Shantia: looking good ![]()
I love how you put the shadow to mark the creases on the shirt ![]()
@Ceru thank you! I thought the shirt would be much harder to do, thankfully it was pretty easy ![]()
Hey guys I'm still alive and stuff, I'm just at a bit of a low right now so I'm lacking motivation, but I still think about the group and everyone (love you guys), I just tend to go MIA a lot :-/
It's just real easy to just avoid/put off things lol.

Um sure, we can try that
Oooh can I join too? Sounds very fun ![]()
EDIT: It's good you're back yay! And now we're losing Tesh for the week ![]()
PS: Happy Holiday Tesh! Don't get eaten by a bear!
More like a shark ![]()
And, yes, totally. We can lay down the details for an art swap once I return. Should be fun ![]()
You'll go diving? Well then, in any case please don't be finished in another creature's stomach... ![]()
Ooh yeah this should be fun. ![]()
