Awwww thank you  and will do! Any tips for drawing his face without using a model? Like should I find a distinct feature and always try to capture it?? lip scar!! kidding, no idea what im doing :)

So, you want to draw him from memory? Unless you have an excellent photographic memory (very few people do), you'll have to do it the hard way: draw him over and over and over and over and over....... and over and over.... and over again. From as many angles as possible. Using a model at first, and then from memory. But the key is to repeat many many times. That's how cartoonists work.

Not sure if this helps... O_0

Uh.... .. nope!

I can hardly look at the model and get it right :pinched:

Just wondering how I'd draw him in scenarios that I don't have screen shots for...not anytime soon, by any means, but just curious... ;)

Oh, I get it :) So, if you just need a good pose, then use a stock image from DevArt. Just make sure to credit the photographer once you post your finished drawing. As far as features are concerned, just look at the screenshots you do have available, and try to make an educated guess. Include the features that define him: the scar, the nose (it's quite distinctive), the jawline (it's a bit squarish, has a nice angle to it), and the hair - that includes the stubble :) Also, keep him in his distinctive armour. That should do the trick :)

Good references will improve the quality of your drawings by a tremendous amount. For instance, for the drawing I am working on for Timebean right now (it's in the WIP section), I am already using quite a few references and stock images, and will probably use more. Right now I have two separate photos that I based my characters on, a whole bunch of screenshots from GoT for armour (Roland's armour is inspired by Jamie's), images of armour from museums, the stone wall, Redcliffe heraldry, and a special brush for the stone floor.

@Qween I didn't think of DevArt for reference until Tesh suggested it, and it's reaaally useful. She pointed me to stock artists mjranum-stock (for male) and mizzd-stock (for female), and using their poses as reference helped me fixed one of my latest drawings big time.

By the way, so much Cullen here these days

So, this is just a quick example of the usefulness of stock images. Make sure to always credit the photographer, though :)

Original stock photos by Ahrum-Stock and Tasastock that I combined as follows:

And this is the final image:

Edit: And when all else fails, I use myself or my hubby as a reference :) So, don't be shy with taking pictures. Just don't let them get into the wrong hands :P

If you are in Dev Art please tell me your name, I want to add you too ;)

my ID's Cerulione, same as here.

That Cullen's really good already ;)

Talking about stock image, don't hesitate to ask Fontofnothing, she got lots of unusual image of Cullen from Flycam. Hers & Melissa's & Cantina's give a good range of unusual pose.

I finished Seb:

Thanks girls ;)

That's a filler actually, just something rather quick because the Film Noir Seb will take eternity... Actually the breastplate is super wrong... Ouch. Idk if lowering it might help probably? And tbh I don't like how his head & background does not match at all. Tried lots of background and none works.

@Vor: the hair is done using this tutorial & tons of coffee:

Okay, so here are the critics I've gathered so far from my RL friends & Mom for that Seb drawings

- shading OK

- colour OK except breastplate (orange part)

- forehead too small

- nose too big & too pronounced (probably I have to make the line thinner?)

- lips too pronounced & too big

- chin too small

- very bad proportion

- hairs too plastic

- breastplate looks like it's just glued and not worn

Probably I'll need to redraw him (another angle? For exercise) to redo the whole Clair Obscur black & white thing instead of continuing on where I was.

Ceru, those are all things that you can keep in mind for your next drawing. Or for the noir version. Do not change anything on this particular version - it is great the way it is.

You were wondering what was wrong with the breastplate - the perspective is wrong. It can be easily adjusted with the Morph tool in PS. I am guessing SAI must have something similar.

For proportions: generally, the head can be divided into three equal parts that contain the forehead, the nose, and the mouth+chin. If you'll divide your next sketch like that, you should get a nice, strong chin :)

Hair - to avoid a rigid, artificial look, make sure to remember that hair is soft. There will always be a few rebellious strands sticking out. In Seb's case, most of them will probably be around the temples, and at the nape of the neck.

The lips are fine (some ppl just have fuller lips), but the shape of the upper lip is a bit too pronounced. It shouldn't dip so strongly into the lower lip.

No worries, Ceru :) You are doing very well :) You are continually improving :) Can't wait to see the noir version :)

Thanks ;)

I'm quite sure that the proportion of 1/3 - 1/3 - 1/3 is respected (I measured it with ruler hehe). But then I forgot that the real Seb from the game got the front higher than a third. Oups...

Okay I'm doing the forbidden, I'm retouching it... (-_-")

Yeah Seb in game has receding hair, but you could see it as younger Seb or Seb with hair loss treatment  B) For the rest proportions seems right, the only thing that strikes me as off is the breastplate position. Don't be so hard on yourself, Ceru, you don't have to make all your improvement in one drawing!  <3

Bwahahaha that's excellent, Seb with Hair Loss Treatment. XD

Thedas Hair Lost Treatment testimony: Before my hair was receeding, and that was unacceptable since the Prince of Starkhaven must have the perfect appearance. So I use Bodahn's Special Oil and it works like magic! Now my face has the 1/3-1/3-1/3 ideal proportion ;)

Just some doodle... of what happens everyday.

Qweeen, he looks gorgeous! You really do have a knack for capturing features :) One thing you might try for your next drawing is to suggest edges (i.e. edge of jawline, nose, etc.) through shading, rather than a strong line. If you want to challenge yourself, that is :)

Thanks, Tesh! And challenge accepted! At this point in my skill, I'm happy if my eyeballs are semi-level though :) I know suggestive shading is what I'm supposed to do with lips and nose, but not sure how to do it with jaw? would it be screenies where the lighting washes out the side of the face? I'll look for those specifically if so!

I left most of my newer traditional drawings back in Toronto, so I cannot show you anything at a higher skill level. But, I already learned the basics when I was a teenager, so you can get an idea from this reeaaaaaaly old portrait (this is very embarrassing):

Spoiler

There are a few hard edges, but the jawline is mostly emphasized through shading. You just start your pencil strokes on the neck away from the jawline, and that should do the trick. Pencil strokes that are supposed to shade the cheek will be lighter in tone. The thing is, you have to cover the entire face with shading to avoid hard edges. This way you can also blend.

That is awesome, I see what you mean now! My lines are following the jaw, but it should move away from it...hmm...maybe I can tweak what I've already done?

And tesh, what's to be embarrassed about?! It's a great portrait :) and it must be cool to see how far you've come in your skills too ;)

That Cullen's hot... :o

Bravo Qween... MOAAAAARRRRR!

About shading the jaw, probably make the neck a shade darker...? And normally his jaws are surrounded by those dark pauldron no?

D'aw... Embarrassed over older drawings because I can see all the mistakes, and I get the urge to correct them. That being said, it might be a good exercise to take an old piece, and redraw it. For comparison :)

You can tweak Cullen's portrait, if you like :) For myself, I try my best to move on once I put my signature on a drawing. Otherwise, I could tweak until the end of time... :P
