So here they are, my steampunk couple doing their magic business. I am usually so shy and subtle with shading, I wanted to challenge myself to a dramatic lightning and I enjoyed it.

Spoiler

@Tesh I wish I could do a portrait like the one you're embarrassed about! It must be funny to see how your skills have improved over time  :)

OoooOOooooo Shiny :D I really love the concept, and I am glad you challenged yourself. You managed to create a very strong focal point :) Keep it up!

Edit: As for my old drawings - funny, yes... At the same time, perfectionist that I am, I cringe inwardly every time I see something I did a looong time ago. Ah, well... Important thing is I improved visibly :)

Thank you Tesh, I'm happy you like it! Is there anything that I should focus on specially for improvement?

I am a fellow perfectionist, so I completely understand you; even with recent drawings, I have to slap my own hand to not reach for the pencil :D

Perhaps for your next piece, you should prepare a tone range for yourself. Maybe five tones, ranging from very light to very dark. And then use only those tones in your drawing.

Also, make sure to separate your characters from the background and their shadows. To create a 3D look on a flat surface, items that are closer to the viewer have to be lighter, whereas items that are further in the background have to be darker. Things are a bit different for landscapes, but you can worry about that once you'll actually want to do a landscape.

Can't wait for your next drawing :)

Thank you so much Tesh, I'll get used to work with tone ranges. Now that I'm starting to draw scenes, it'll be very useful to keep in mind what you said about lighting and giving a 3D look :-)

I also realised I have lots of work to do regarding texture. Sometimes I want to go cartoon and just suggesting textures is ok; but then I want to go realistic and end up cartoon anyway xD I think my visual education relies too much on lines because that's what always was easier for me.

So... I wanted to do a 30 min portrait exercise, and who better to be my subject than Cullen? It turned into 2 hrs... I'm pathetically slow :(

I tried a different style this time around, inspired by Sephirona and The Real McGee

Did I say how much I love people doing exercises with Cullen? Yes I did. Let me say it again ^^

Very nice one, Tesh! With this style it looks like a younger Cullen; no probs over here

Great art from everyone! It's inspiring to see all of you practicing so hard. Painting I did to practice portraits from mind:

Constructive criticism very welcome =)

@ Oni - Lovely portrait! Her eyes are very expressive, and I very much like the painterly style. The only suggestion I have is to vary the colours in her skin just a bit more. Looks like both your shadows and highlights are warm. You might want to add some light blues in the highlights to make things pop.

Beautiful work :) Keep it up!

Wow that's really nice! I'm afraid that my skill & understanding is not sufficient to give any constructive feedback except that I like the way you paint her mouth.

Good job, Oni! I'm an absolute beginner so little informed criticism here, but at first glance the eyes stroke me as a bit off; maybe the right one is a bit too round? And her mouth a bit too high, but I love its Rosetti-ish lush form :-) I love dat cheekbone and how you shaped it with light and shadow. I like the hair too, maybe with a bit more highlights as Tesh said it would stand out more. Overall I think it's a very nice work!

Wow that's pretty Vor :)

I love how you shade the clothings. It remind me a lot of Little House in the Prairie book illustrations ;)

Thank you, Ceru!  <3 I loved how the combination of watercolours + coloured pencil works for clothing, I'll definitely be using it more.

Beautiful work, Vor :) Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I was aware of the eye problem, but gave up on fixing it after several tries because I really wanted to move on. It was just supposed to be a practice piece, after all. I'll keep your feedback in mind for my next piece!

Ceru, of course you can criticize others' art even if you are a beginner. Don't be shy ;)

Thank you, Oni and Tesh!  <3

Oni I think what you did was best, when you're struggling with something it's better to move on and keep it in mind for the next piece. It took me some time to learn it, but now I am able to actually finish drawings!  =]

Here is the finished version of Flemeth as Queen of the Raven. Shading that skirt has been tough, but also the most fascinating drawing exercise I've done up to now.

I love the Little Prince, so bring it on! I'm loving your doodles + quotes (and shading with markers! I forget everything about shading when I drop the grey pencils :D)

Vor, the dress is absolutely gorgeous (now, please make me a sewing pattern for it...! I'm getting tired of wearing my corsets with a pair of jeans, I want .. no I need that dress !!^^)

Ceru, your drawing looks like the one on the record I listened when I was a kid :)

Spoiler

I must ask my grand-ma for this record .. and for a record player too :)
