It's pretty much about experimenting... Unless you follow a rigurous curriculum.

I highly suspect that this does exist in art school...?

Alright I'll just stop talking.

Ceru, Robb looks great. Gosh you're brave for going ink and pen, but he turned out excellent!! Do you find you analyze faces differently when you can't make corrections?

Yes, in art school they will teach you how to approach every composition. It's not just drawing willy-nilly. A lot of planning has to happen before you can get a great illustration. As far as rendering particular textures is concerned, they would teach you that as well - you learn how to draw metal and wood, leather and silk and cotton, etc. And it is quite rigurous. Which is fine. Once you master the basics, you are free to modify and improvise techniques to put your unique stamp on it.

When I took art courses at a more intensive level, I had a few moments where I went like: "Huh... I never would have thought about it that way, but it makes sense, and it makes things easier."

My time in that school was short, however, so I only learned a limited amount. Still, it helped :)

My point is that people are different - some pick up certain things intuitively, others need someone else to explain certain concepts to them before they can draw properly. I have always improved much faster when I had a prof looking over my shoulder than when I drew by myself. But practice is necessary in either case.

As a side note, I just saw that my town is offering some night portrait drawing classes...I'm seriously thinking about it and it's cheap, but Im worries I'm learning "wrong" or something and the guy will like make me learn from scratch :( sooo yah...not sure on that one!

...I don't know who that is since I don't watch TV for the last 15 years... BUT I WANT HIM. Now. Grrrr...

That guy is not from Games of Thrones I suppose?

Qween, if you're "learning wrong" isn't it better to know as soon as possible? Anyway I don't think there's wrong way to learn...

Have a Cullen...

I still don't have any idea on how pen drawing is supposed to work.

Ooh I've read the first book cover to cover at least twice, then the next few books but only on Arya & Jon Snow's perspective. (I seriously need to read the books from cover to cover...). I'm going to watch the series, too many faces I love there (Robb, Robb, Oberyn, Robb, Robb, Jon Snow, Robb had I said Robb?)

Ouch I forgot, I'll find them now!

You ladies are improving so quickly :D Ceru, Cullen looks amazing!

Qween, Chris is delicious, as usual. I would recommend that you take the course. Do not worry about having to start from scratch - it won't really feel that way.

When I was a teenager, I took painting lessons for three years, where my prof did not correct my drawing style. He allowed all of us to have fun, and only occasionally made some corrections, to make things pop. Then I switched to a drawing class for one year, and the first thing the prof there did was tell me I needed to learn the proper way of drawing a portrait. In a few months, I was on the right track, and my portraits improved tremendously. So, I'd say it would be worth the effort :)
