Wow that one is very great, even better than loomis book because basically what Loomis said in his book about hands is "you have two hands, use them as reference". And good plates to copy but well... ;)

For the head, what's the size of your paper/canvas?

Glad you like the vid! :) I was so delighted when I found it; I thought that it would be enough to copy references, but while I was practising with these pics (I put the link in case they are useful) I realized that there was always something looking off, and it was because I wasn't following a basic structure.

The size of the pad I use is A4, though for the Dalish dancer I used about 3/4 of it.

This is probably crazy but if you aim for traditional probably do it bigger first? A3? At least it's easier to get the head proportion correctly on bigger drawings no? Just rough sketch then go to A4 if you really aim for A4 format

And thanks for the hand reference :D

For the last few weeks, I swore a lot, insulting my pencils, the paper, my two left hand, the weather, wasps, everything and anything ... Boyfriend told me to not give up, and ... THE PRIIIIZE :P he bought me a graphic tablet (ok, for some of you, it might sound stupid to be happy about a such small thing but, we are not really rolling in cash, so for me, it's a huuuuge present :P)
Next step: master the Beast ...  (I will read any every tips you can post ^^ I feel like I finally enter the 21th century ^^)

@Mor: Yay!!  :D It doesn't sound stupid at all, a tablet is an amazing present  :)

In my experience, drawing with it is going to be really awkward at first and it will be difficult to adjust to looking not down at your hand, but at the computer screen. But with practice it will become second nature  ;)

Here are some links to some tips for getting used to it: 1 2 3

Ceru: Here is a good guide to picking colors and the example at the end is a good method for cel shading.

This one's a good guide to shadows, although it is in anime style, so I prefer just to use it as a guideline rather than actual reference. The same goes for this and this.

This one is a step by step process with SAI.

I hope these help  :)

@Ceru: It's the "Wacom CTL 480S (if that means anything for you ... for me, it's just number :P). I was huu .. looking for a Bamboo like Tesh told me (us) once, but I couldn't find one :/ I read a lot of review and it looks like this one is the new generation of bamboo (if I have understood correctly).
I guess i'll stay with photoshop ... but I will give SAI a shot (I saw it was a one month trial)

@Pro: Thanks for all this tips  I need to download all thoses pages to consult them offline. I will be at my grandma's house soon, and no internet there (yes yes, there is still some places stuck in the 20th century :D (you know, crowing rooster wake up, no lights in the (only) street at night and no smartphones' network)

Thanks Pro :D

That's what I need.

@Morlanwen: Google said that it's Intuos. Intuos are really good, I'm working with Intuos too & so far love it :)

Paint Tool SAI worth the whole price IMO which is relatively not expensive for the high quality & lightweight software it gives (around 30-40€). It certainly worth the 1 month trial & you can always decide later on. It doesn't laggs much on computer that's really something, and the line stabilizer is excellent.

Here's some tutorials I love & gathers a bit from here & there

Paint Tool SAI Brushes (that I use & love)

Darling Mignonette's custom brushes

Blanania's Brushes

Feylen's Brushes

Arryll's Brushes

Purmu's Cloud Brush

Ceru side note: DarlingMignonette's pack is excellent but it's a bit more complicated to install. I also highly recommend Feylen's & Blanania's

For creating SAI custom brushes (you might not need this rightaway though but always good to know)

About Colours picking & colour theory

General Colour picking

Skin Colour picking

Justin Oakford's notes on colours

 : I also have several stuffs I had saved offline and don't know anymore where to find... like the skin colour swatches and palettes in general and for each DA characters etc2. PM me if interested. The DA one can be applied to everyone really since it gives the lightest & darkest colours of the skin. Before seeing this I didn't know that Viv for example have the darkest AND lightest tone on her skin, Cullen has the least contrast.

Step-by-step

Felitomkinson's lineart tutorial

Sully lineless drawings tutorial

Emegustart's colouring tutorial

ETC

Standard Canvas Size

Travelling with a tablet, how to take care etc

Art Tutorial masterlists

Drawing Tutorial Masterpost

Everything Masterpost

EDIT: sorry I mean SAI doesn't lagg at all >.<

It's very lightweight and excellent. You can go really far with that IMO, I'm trying to test its limit right now

Okaay so there's this new free software that's apparently lightweight & really great. I'll probably test it one of this day ^^. The person who told me about this use SAI usually & Photoshop & according to her it's highly recommended. Might worth the download, it's free anyway.

I'm just wondering, do you think that it's OK for beginner artists to sign original artworks with RL name?

Actually I wonder whether it's a good idea to publish original artworks under an alias in which it had already been involved in fandom (in tumblr mostly). TBH I'm very tempted in putting my name on original artworks & pieces related to a long term project under the Cerulione account in both tumblr & deviant art just for my ego but it also means revealing my RL identity to an account attached to a fandom already. Or should I just say zap and publish everything under this nickname since at this stage I might even not like my own artworks anymore a few years from now?

I see Tesh for example put her RL name openly on Deviant Art and keep the Teshayel for everything fandom related too.

Any opinion is appreciated. Up to now I've heard all sots of contrasting opinion so well...

I really couldn't say... I don't think it should be based on your looking at your works some time from now and not wanting anyone to link them back to you  :D I guess it depends on the degree of privacy you want and whether you want to keep different themes in separate areas; for instance, maybe you want to keep all fanart under your nickname and the rest of your art under your real name. You can also keep your nickname on Tumblr and display your real name on DevArt. I think this could be a good option; that way, people can associate your name with your art but it won't be tumbling around on Tumblr (jeez, me and my involuntary puns)

This might be the resource discovery of my life  :D http://www.idrawfashion.com/

Its tutorials are aimed at fashion sketches, which means techniques are simple and easy; so I think they are really good to grasp the basics and build on them, or if you just want an efficient manner of drawing different types of clothing without getting into too much detail.

Does anyone have any tutorials or advice for drawing and/or digital painting a reflective surface?

You mean a mirror, window or pool of water?

Some videos you might find useful:

Chrome drawing tutorial

Drawing glass

Splashing water

Metal, reflective teapot

I know this is all in pencil, but the same principles can be used digitally or with oils/acrylics.

Hope this helps!

Do you have any specific question Kaibe? I just got that surface texture chapter from schoolism there are stuffs about reflexivity & materials relationships.

Those videos seem very helpful! Now I just need to practice!
I mostly was looking for glass. Stuff to help with windows, helmets, that sort of stuff.
I recently saw this video of Matt Rhodes doing concept art. They discuss some pretty interesting things.

Found a really great skin tone tutorial (at least for Caucasian skin), that also explains how colours appear relative to each other:

Thanks for the vid, Kaibe!

Tesh, that's a really great tutorial for how colour changes when next to each other and also light. What he did with the background was a real eye-opener! So really useful even for traditional painting.

Just saw it on Twitter, Bob Ross official YouTube channel has uploaded the complete 10 first seasons of his "Joy of Painting" series. I haven't seen any of them but the guy is something of a pop culture celebrity; I'm sure there are many useful things to find on those vids  :)
