Staff of the Dynamo's damage bonus doesn't seem to work.

Has anyone actually observed a change in damage before/after being hit while using this staff?

I've tried testing it a few times but haven't got conclusive results for a few reasons.

 

1) The damage seems to vary a lot - I've seen non-crit single hits from the thing range from ~50 to ~90 on the same target.

2) Elemental resistances and vulnerabilities skew the results, with a rune it's dealing variable lightning and spirit damage from auto-attacks, and then whatever element any given skill happens to be.

3) It's actually difficult to get a large sample, beacause either things die too quickly (Routine) or deliberately getting hit to test the "on/off" function of the bonus is risky (Threatening/Perilous)

 

I've given up caring mostly: Basically, if the 20% buff works, Dynamo is the best staff in the game by a large margin. And if the buff doesn't work it's within the top few% damage wise anyway. Either way, it's a great staff.

 

I also try every now and then to test whether the Horn of Valor buff from a Moon Axe gets the benefit of That's the Spirit when used by a Templar, and if not, whether it "over-writes" the Templar's buff with a weaker version. I have Caliban, so it doesn't really matter to me, but ever since I wondered about it I'd like to know for sure, you know. Still really hard to get a conclusive result.

So.. after going back and doing some more serious testing - sample size this time being some 300-400 tedious kills in routine with a keeper with no skill points spent.

 

As a control I did a run with a Mindchill staff with 65 base damage, roughly 100 Venatori grunts (archers/soldiers) later I found it dealt around 84-90 damage per hit (disregarding the Spirit rune).

 

I then tested my Staff of the Dynamo which has 63 base damage (but slightly higher +attack%)

Staff of the Dynamo definitely has a 20% buff to damage when you start a map. Against Venatori grunts it will deal around 98-108 damage on average (disregarding the spirit rune) until you first get hit, then it drops to around 83-89 - basically level with the Mindchill.

 

The problem though, the bonus never comes back.

 

5 seconds without damage - no 20% increase.

10 seconds - no 20% increase.

1 Minute - no increase.

 

After the first time I got hit on each map, I never saw the 20% bonus damage come back.

So yes, the buff is definitely "broken", but until you DO get hit, it's definitely the best staff in the MP game.
