At least they didn't start taking red lyrium and tried to kill Hawke if you sided with them as revealed in Inquisition. And before you say Orsino, the devs outright admit Orsino wasn't supposed to be a boss if you sided with the mages but they needed another boss so Orsino goes crazy due to bad writing.

I also through blaming Meredith's decent into insanity on the lyrium idol as bad writing. The writers took an easy way out in what could have been a complex storyline into "the devil made me do it"

Basically that 3rd act of DA2 was a lot of bad writing.

He approves when you give him a Tevinter Chantry amulet, so... maybe he does, to an extent.

Anders also blames them for the ancient Magisters corrupting the Golden City in the same conversation. Despite his disagreement with the Circles, he does believe in the teachings of the Chantry of Andraste, so I think he'd take issue with some of the teachings of the Imperial Chantry.

"Its not my fault, if in God's plan, He made the devil so much stronger than a man."

I dunno, it'd have been really compelling if Meredith struggled with it.

I don't think the Templar story was told articulately. No weight was given at all to the blood mages like Orsino and Quentin

DAO: Yes, the Tenplar path is portrayed as the "bad choice." That's how any person who plays the choice-oriented games would think. Killing a large group of possible innocents=bad.

DA2: Eh.... This one sort of depends on perspective. I agree that it puts the templars in a worse light as it constantly implies that the mages are only being violent idiots because they're oppressed (that doesn't make much sense, but it's what's implied). However, since literally every mage (except for Merrill) in the game either goes full violent moron by the end or dies, one could argue for the Templars on this one.

DAI: Also iffy. Dispite the dangers of time travel, the Mages were fairly secure in Redcliffe and we are given a fair idea of what's happening. The Templar situation is shrouded in mystery, so to me it feels like the more pressing issue with the information we're given.

Those same people also gave us Dorian and Felix, so we're even?

xD

Meredith essentially lobotomized someone simply for passing a love note. Meredith was a mage-hating dictator way before red lyrium.

Do we know WHEN she did that? If she were such a mage hater she would've taken mage Hawke away loooong ago regardless of how helpful s/he was.

We know very little of Meredith before the red lyrium, so we don't have much to judge her by.

He certainly won't if she's, you know, dead.

Yeah, but she basically insinuates that she's never going to tell him. Especially if you ask her if Alistair knows that she's met Maric. The way she says, "No, no should he," or something like that is SOOOOO bitter. Yikes.

She has time to change her mind. Wynne eventually came back for her son, after all.

I take it you haven't sided with the mages since this is revealed if you do. Cullen outright says that the love note was the reason Samson was kicked out. Given that Samson was kicked out way before Hawke even arrived at the city, that means that yes, she did that before going insane. And people say she wasn't a tyrant. Also, Meredith didn't know that Hawke was a mage in Act 1. It isn't until Act 2 that she finds out Hawke is a mage. If Hawke wasn't made champion, I'm certain Meredith would have thrown Hawke into the Gallows once the Qunari threat was over.

Fiona might change her mind but if Alistair is king, I doubt Alistair wants anything to do with her given that the venatori kicked Teagan out and we know how angry Alistair gets when his family is threatened.

"But Alistair, I'm your real mom. Your really, really real mom."

Considering how open he was to Goldanna, I think he'd jump in joy about having a living mom after the "YOU ABANDONED ME" part.

Considering how butthurt he gets about the Warden causing the death of Isolde/Connor or making Loghain a Grey Warden, I'd say he'd be mad about the kicking Teagan out. Also, assuming Alistair believes her, he can't let people know considering how elf-blooded humans are discriminated against. He'd be overthrown if people knew that.

Do you really think Alistair is that cold hearted? We... are talking about the guy who we traveled with for over a year, right?

I'm sure he'd strive to keep it a secret, sure, but kick her to a curve?

But that was for totally different reasons. She was locked away in a Circle. The second she got out and the Blight ended she went to talk to Rhys.

I've sided with them. I got that part confused, but I still don't think Meredith's anywhere near as bad as the Tevinter magisters.

We know she was an incompetent and weak leader since the beginning of Act 1.

Then again, you have to take into account her sister.

Meredith is a paranoid tyrant with a bias (at minimum) against mages. That is the last person you want in charge unless your goal is to purposely abuse mages. And this was *before* any red lyrium corruption.

But yes I'd agree that Meredith's worst is still not on the level of negativity as your average Tevinter Magister.

If I did, it would be for the sake of determining whether or not she's mentally and/or emotionally compromised, and thus not fit for leadership.

I think the more important thing to take into consideration is that she is effectively the guardian of a city designed by Magisters to weaken the fade, which has the lovely side effect of driving everyone in the area mad (especially mages). Really the city should be condemned, or at least mages should be forbidden from going near it.

Fair point. I still think the Tevinter magisters are worse than her, though. :b

Depends on the magister. The magisterium is hardly a unified body. Everyone's got their pet causes. Dorian (who isn't technically a magister... yet) and what's her face Tilani are proof.

I hope when we visit Tevinter in the next game, we'll meet a few magister's who aren't all HURR HURR BLOODMAGIC. I want to see a different side of Tevinter.

So far we've only seen and heard the bad sides.

I kind of question now. There's a codex that says that everyone and their mother that goes down South for vacation claims to be a 'magister' because of the status that comes with the title. Caladrius from DA:O could've been a two-bit Laetan slaver who threw the word around so that he wouldn't get locked up in the nearest Circle.
