I really enjoyed Jack McDevitt's "Talent for War" so I picked up another his books, "The Engines of God." I didn't particularly care for that one so I never continued on with the series. Nevertheless, the idea of some alien force cleansing the galaxy of all intelligent life every so often seems, at least superficially, similar to the Reapers. My question is: did McDevitt ever get around to explaining why the galaxy was being cleansed every so often? And did they end up stopping their eventual destruction?

I've never read or am familiar with those books, but in the usual killer Von Neumann probe scenario it's basically because the self-replicating terraforming bots have gone haywire or are following their programming too literally with no regard for existing real estate owners. The figure is something like 7 million years to completely terraform the galaxy using self-replicating STL probes.
