Well... I love dragon age. I loved dragon age origins, I loved dragon age 2 (at least once I expected the map recycling etc).

Just played the god of secrets mission and man, despite not being a key mission, it was so disappointing. No cut scenes or companion interaction, search 6 circles and find body parts... Okay, so the payoff must be cool right? A neat boss to defeat.

Dispair demon with extra hit points. I didn't even know it was a boss until it was almost dead.

Nothing cinematic, no real story except a few poems on 7 VERY hard to find veil fire glyphs (which I did after, by the way, because I want to do everything my first playthrough.

It wasn't fun. I actually thought to myself "this is a dragon age game?" when the boss died.

Bioware, I love your work, I loved dao and da2, mass effect 1, 2, and 3 (esp when the complete endings were added).

This mission may have been the least engaging you've ever made. Cool temple, cool premise, but nothing was done with it. If the priest had been challenging, not a cut and paste rift demon, with lines and a cutscene and some depth, it would have been a bioware moment.

It wasn't.

I hope by some miracle someone notices this post because damn, I love your stories, and I'm feeling the absence of them in this game.

Welcome to the club.

Many of us are disappointed with these minor side quests, commonly referred to as "fetch quests". Basically you engage in pointless tasks with little or no payoff (other than some xp and influence).

With a bit of luck, BioWare will take note of how many of their fans are disappointed with this aspect of the game and will make changes... sure, we don't want recycled maps -- we like that the maps are fairly large, and look different to one another. However, the filler quests completely ruin this.

In regards to side quests and different maps, an approach similar to Origins would have been a better option.

Bioware did what people were asking in terms of the quests and took a book from Bestheda and New Vegas (though that was Obsidian) - making quests that have little dialogue and supposedly tell their story through codex entries. Except those quests aren't that great.

I agree. I played this quest with an Elven Inquisitor too. One who lives for recovering old elven secrets and lore, and brought Solas and Sera along in anticipation of discovering something really interesting. Like you said, all that buildup, all that preparation, all those steps toward solving this puzzle... and all you get is a despair demon. And (in my case) Solas making an offhand comment that the priest was murdered and hidden away in secret by his initiates, "a tragic ending." THAT'S IT???!!!!

Man, I could have just gone to a higher level rift in an area I was passing through on my way to a main story quest anyway and gotten the same thing out of it!

those quests have huge potential. Dirthamen's Temple has it. i wouldn't mind spending more time uncovering its secrets than gathering supplies in Exalted Plains (i don't even understand why i had to do that...). codex entries instead of cinematics? i'm cool with that... just... there should be more story to this place. and the whole encounter is just a more polished copy of Asunder (DA:O, Deep Roads). one little difference: in the older version you could chose not to fight. but hey, screw roleplaying and choices, right?

EDIT:

oh, i think a despair demon fits perfectly :3

Probably why I don't remember it!  Many of the boss fights are weak, some of this is caused by the behavior modeling along with weak story and/or missing plot. There are some good discussions on these topics.  It's just odd to have "normal animals" tougher than a boss.

Exile they missed the mark when looking at the competition, codex entries are nothing like the books that Bethesda and others evolved, the sound of turning pages in the damp environment with flickering candle light -you could almost smell the mold and hot wax!

I loved that quest, and I read all the notes(and Solas' comments were interesting, too), but I agree, if we could get an actual "talking" NPC and not just a stray explorer, but an ancient demon, like in the Circle tower in DAO, it would've been much cooler.

Unfortunately, i did this particular quest, when I was sick of text-rpg-reading-codex (really, I have room of books for reading!), so I missed what happened in that temple. In nutshell it was classic mmo dungeon with boss and loot. I usually read all codex, but DAI is just too much :(

Btw,I don't get comparison with Skyrim side quests.  I'm playing Skyrim right now, and I really wish DAI got at least some of Skyrim side quests! Kill the emperor! Drink contest with the God! Crime Investigation! Escape Jail! Blackreach!
Main quest sucks, though, but DAI main quest not too far ahead.

Yeah, I also brought Solas along hoping for some cool scenes but it was all in vain. But at least there was something to be excited about. The temple where you have to collect all 114 shards to open the last door is even more disappointing, because there is really nothing in there except demons #1147-1156.

This game in general feels so modular, so unconnected, it's saddening, what did the writers really do besides the codex? The side quests don't have any substance at all.

Well at least I got a very powerful weapon there you know the strongest in the game. If it was there I kinda forgot where I took it from.

Here's a question - I, as far as I can tell, completed that quest, found the parts, beat the boss, and all that. I'm about to head down to the Arbor Wilds, but the map marker for the Temple of Dirthamen never disappeared. I can still travel there if I want, I assume. Any ideas why? Other similar quests, like with the temple of Dumat, I'm pretty sure disappeared.

The only thing I remember from this quest was that the boss was too weak and I killed it in three or four seconds...

That's because the gameplay pacing in DAI is so bad that a minimum of exploration seems to put you about five levels over the recommended requirements for everything.

I hated this mission, it was tedious and the setting was ugly. No-payoff at the end of it sealed my opinion of it.

Yeah, I really hope the dlc is cinematic, story based, maybe has a few large scale battles. Above all character interaction and some serious world-ending content with compelling enemies. Enemies with personalities and introductions... That's what dragon age always was, this skyrim crap isn't why I play.

Actually don't... We want interesting sidequest that was a complain since da2 was out... DA2 had the same problem but with minor frequency some sidequest were interesting...in DAI almost all sidequest are just boring soulless collect this.. collect that.....as people say... like a MMO...

Taking bethsheda as example is just plain wrong... Quests%2

The quest wasn't anything more than an introduction to the existence of Dirthamen, and how far his priests will go to keep their precious secrets...and what shape Dirthamen's ugly side takes. I hope my protective mamma bear Lavellan never has to see that side of him. This quest combined with the Temple of Andraste wartable quest you get before leaving Haven, reveal some very interesting info.

I agree with you, OP, more could have been done with the quest, though I enjoyed exploring the temple and checking out all the wall paintings and mosaics, but more dialogue from Solas and especially Cole, would have been great. Perhaps we will get some in future dlc.

I agree. I felt that a few cutscenes inserted with some of the 'major' bosses would've gone a long way towards uplifting them into 'missions-of-interest' category. My own example, to add to a lackluster payoff, would be the male desire demon (self-described choice demon though) in Emprise Du Lion. Not going to lie, I was really hoping to see a male desire demon, since I've always thought the female desire demons were really pretty ^.^. Anyhow, using a regular human shaped guy wasn't too bad, but having a cutscene to help indicate this is an important mission in this area would've been a nice touch, since otherwise I just kind of relegated it to being yet another fight. Or like, when you ran into Carrol in the Emerald Graves. Sure, your Inquisitor doesn't know him, but your Warden did :( I felt sad that his death didn't get anything other than a quick note from Cullen when he gave you the mission.

Can we all agree that removing so many cutscenes and replacing them with casual 3rd-person camera angles didn't help the game? Its fine when we're speaking to a random NPC, but for quest givers and important quest conclusions... I want something special. Take Imshael for example: Far more interesting than the other great demons (Xebenkeck and Gaxkang) but it was more anticlimactic fighting him in my opinion, because it was just a simple conversation.

Amen. I missed the cinematic cut-scenes and conversations in this game. Not enough.

I hope the dlc will be heavily story based!

Incidentally I think the temple in god of secrets is the single most empty and unrewarding storyline in dragon age inquisition... All that build up, it's own map, and there's NOTHING there.

And man finding those runes was tedious... I did it once, never again. Someone thought that would be fun... Boggles the mind.

Agreed.  I can't click "like" any more today, apparently.  I didn't pay the price of admission on modern hardware in a fully voiced game capable of advanced graphics to - read a bunch of tiny squares of text.

I could play Zork to do that.
