Battles against enemy troops or defence/last stand/hold the fort type situation where your supposed to be surrounded and outnumbered doesn't feel like its up to scale or as epic as it should. Dragon battles are great and other small skirmishes are fun to (rift battles especially as the wave /horde mdode structure fits the situation better) but im talking about the other engagements. In the beggining Crossroads questline it was laughable at the lack of on screen mages and Templars or Inquisition forces. Its a Threeway war but in the form of 2 or three waves of about 4 or 5 enemies sometimes a couple more. You hear sounds of battle in the distance and get close enough and youll gain experience as Templars and Mages kill each other (cool i guess) and then see that their are 4 enemies left. Or entering an area woud trigger a wave of enemies which is cool but not waves of 5 enemies.
...I wouldn't of minded if some areas of a region had quick loading screens and i do emphasize the word quick. Enough to add enough enemies and even allies (NPC forces). Maybe the sound bite of a large battle going on should of been removed and let the real time sound speak for itself. Perhaps amplify it a little cuz the sound of hundreds fighting in the background played to something that is barely a skirmish is awkward and didn't work for me. Explorin the regions and closing rifts are fun or happening upon patrols or enemy camps where fun but that's because it wasn't supposed to be a huge battle IT WAS skirmish
During the last "big battle" n the quest In your Heart Shall Burn, it was almost pulled off as i was surprised to see 2 or 3 enemy archers 1 or 2 spellbinders (bastards) and a squad of zealots with a gladiator or two and 9. 9 or 10 enemies at once was better but is difficult and 10 enemies with NPC allies as a buffer and distraction to make things manageable in real time. But with enemy and allied fodder" things could be epic in scale and proportionate to difficulty.
Their could be 10 or 15 (or 20 to 40 if your feelin cray) "fodder enemies" that are one or two shotted(one or two hits and dead, or an arrow=dead) while NPC allies in equal or a little less than, also fight alongside but a few would fall within the first wave of fodder(50% or so) Then a second wave would follow almost right after you begin to attack the first wave but this second wave is fodder mixed with "at level enemies" or your basic waves that we fight now. (Party members would target only the most threatening). The third wave would appear shortly after he second wave was down to 1 or 2 regular leveled enemies. The third wave would be fodder, middle ranked archers and melee enemies with a couple mages with commanders and or a couple heavies at the back.
Your NPC troops should last thru the entire wave as your party members would wack down the fodder wave like grass with a weed whacker (for fun and scale, immersion and to feel like your in a big battle) and then keep the ranked (at level) enemies busy. If the fodder enemies and fodder allies moved in small groups and stayed within 2 or three meters of each group while 1 or 2 meters from each other then things wouldn't get to chaotic out of whack. Fodder AI could be simple. Attack attack attack, charge charge charge while the Allied fodder a little more complex while some cover you while youre surrounded and others stick with targeting other fodder and low ranked enemies.
Or the fodder type enemies could just keep coming continuously as you fight off waves of ranked enemies (while some of the fodder could just as well be lower ranked basic foot soldiers and archers in whatever armor that fits the side they fight for that way you could also have waves of 10 to 20 level 7 enemies while being at level 11 that pose a threat only in numbers but can be handled by two melee companions, one of them a tank or warrior aleast while the others provide cover and keep higher ranked 10 11 and 12 ranked foes at bay. All of this could work. Incorporatiing all these types of engagements would be great. Is it possible to mx it up like this if it was part of a DLC pck. as well to keep the pace up and get away from that wave/horde mode type structure of large scale battles.
Another thing would be horse nmounted combat. A simple swing left or swing right or fire arrow while limited mage abilities upon a horse would make sense and some abilities like Bull charge could be combined while on horse but its probably to late to create and add any of this stuff but im just throwing out more ideas for sequels or DLC just cuz i can.
One more thing, the hold R2 attack was annoying to begin with but now as i face more enemies at once (Still not enough as i wish there where more and more NPC soldiers that could balance things out) its forcing me to choose the tac cam approach to every battle only gradually progressing thru the fight in the camera or out of the camera. The Lock on is to tight and sluggish, while holding down for continuous attacks you'll get stuck in a animation attacking nothing (hopefully your combat roll is available or you just have to put up your shield (why does this have to be an ability? Their should of been a shield up' button and it shouldn't slow your movement. But that's all part of the balancing. Just wish they'd find a way to balance things without small nonsense like this.)
The attack should just been clicking a button like R1 instead of the trigger or X and makng jump R2 or R1. Jump could of even been a press and release thing where you press the trigger down and you'd crouch low and then release slowly to stand and instantly to jump in the direction desired.
And i know its def too late for climb/vault clambouring but can we agree that areas lie The forbidden Oasis and Storm Coast could of been mre fun to explore if we could clamber up in some areas or jump to ladders that arent hanging all the way down of course rogues would jump the highest and warriors would jump based on whether they had on a jacket, mail, or armor. In the oasis I would just summon Heraldo my damn horse and then position myself close to the edge could almost get on to and hen get off my horse and switch to a character as they appeared if they where on the ledge i was trying to reach.
