Do you really need to be submerged in it, though? Do you really need to see Dorian being subjected to a blood magic ritual to change his sexuality? Is his palpable anger and hurt not enough, or is actual blood and suffering required to have an impact?

I would have liked to have seen some of the sh*t that is implied though. Like the inquisitor getting hurt is one of those things I would like to see more of and not only get implied. Mass effect citadel dlc did player character hurt perfect imo.

A lot of the darker elements in DA:I require some reading of the flavor materials you find.

Reading the note about the hunter shooting the Templar just before he was about to rape a dying refugee.... That's pretty much on the gritty side of things.

It's not the same thing as seeing it in the game. It's like watching agents of shield and hear them referring to captain america or thor.

You never see darkspawn and broodmothers going at it.

I don't think it diminishes the darkness of it.

But we saw broodmother and that was creepy enough. In DAI we just get told that the world i horrible as hell sometimes.

You want gritty?

My Inquisitor just found a weapon in a dung heap. It allowed me to craft a banana-on-a-stick out of old splinters.

That's deep stuff, man.

(On a serious note, I always wondered what those splinters were for. Now I know)

De-sensitization...what seemed dark and disturbing in the first chapter looses its' edge by the third chapter because we have been overexposed to it...

About the question asked above;

No, I don't see to see everything up close, and I don't care in the least about horror and gore, but the darker and more controversial elements of the world should be brought home to the player with some impact. Obviously this has a huge YMMV area, but I have a few examples:

Topic: abuse of elven servants by those in power.

DAI: In the Winter Palace, we hear some guards talk about a certain red-headed elf girl. The context makes it clear she likely won't have much choice about "servicing" them.

DAO: In Arl Howe's estate, we can open a door and interrupt a rather suggestive scene.

Topic: Morrigan's ritual:

DAO: We can enact the ritual, and while the context suggests that the child's personality will not be overwritten, this is still an element that makes many people uncomfortable.

DAI: Kieran becomes normal and the problem is removed to the sphere of the elven gods, whose existence is governed by different rules.

In the first case, we experience this one step more removed in DAI compared to DAO. In the second case, the element is removed completely from anywhere where people might have strong feelings about it.

Result: the game has become more tame, more safe to experience. The player is less likely to be confronted with things that might make them uncomfortable, in a way that might make them uncomfortable. It has been sanitized.

Seems I must have missed boob monsters, people force fed their brethren, cursed people, sounds of someone getting abused coming from the circle tower, implied rape, blood magic infront of our eyes etc etc. Do tell where in the game any of that is.

Seems I must have missed 1) boob monsters,  2) people force fed their brethren, 3) cursed people, 4) sounds of someone getting abused coming from the circle tower, 5) implied rape, 6) blood magic infront of our eyes etc etc. Do tell where in the game any of that is.

1) Romance scene with a female dwarf, Iron Bull

2) Red templar behemoth

3) Seeker Daniel

4) Champions of the just sfx

5) Knockout Powder + Archer's Lance + I Was Never Here

6) Here lies the abyss

So youre saying that female dwarf and IB = broodmother. Seeker daniel was fed demons and not cursed, Champions of the just sfx is not like what we heard outside kirkwalls circle, 5 is not serious on your part and 6 is correct.

Dragon age Inquisition tries to convince the player that Thedas is a grim place with wars and famine but it mostly looks like a Disney movie and much of the writing feels very "Disney" to and it totally kills the believability for me.

Not intending to drag up the Witcher vs Dragon Age again this scene from TW2 is a good example of dark violence

It's Dark, gritty, violent and raw and conveys the feeling of this grim world perfectly.

Yes, I find the wold much more bland then in Origins. Not realy that interesting. Hell. DA2 was dark and full of bad and depiste it's flaws it was able to keep the spirit of DA:O. Inquisition doesn't feel that way.

I think if all the demon activity actually came off Demonic, the game would be darker, but all the demons and situations are a bit gamey or cartoony. The undead and demons never come off scary at all. I remember really having a sense of evil with the dark spawn in origins.

Especially when only one of the Fade Rifts I can recall opened in the middle of a town, but it doesn't really count since the town in question was already devestated by the Orlesian Civil War and long-since abandoned.

It'd have been far more effective to have seen some of the devestation caused by a Rift opening smack dab in the middle of a populated place and the carnage caused by a horde of rampaging demons descending upon the frightened populous of Thedas? This was meant to be part of the plot of the game, no? Us saving people from danger? So why did no-one really seemed bothered by them at all?

Plus you'd also get a nice sense of accomplishment, when after we sealed the Rift, we could return and perhaps witness the people now returning to their homes and attempting to rebuild? You helped these people when no-one else could and gave them back their homes.

Sadly, most of the Rifts seem to be in the middle of nowhere, or people seem remarkably blase about them? Like that Rift in the Hinterlands located in the fort with the cultists, that no-one seems at all concerned with whatsoever? Even if they worshipped it as we're told, it's still remarkable that no demons had come through to massacre them before we showed up?

(to Sifr) Ha, they do seem to be oddly calm all things considered. Maybe they've gotten used to it by now?

*Rift opens up in the distance of a farm in the Hinterlands*

Little girl: "Daddy! There's a demon at the door asking me to give in to sloth!"

Farmer: "Again? *grumbles* Honey, get daddy's pitchfork!"

*Rift opens up in the middle of a city*

Noble Woman #1: "Oh my, it appears to be raining demons again."

Noble Woman #2: "*sigh* I suppose my lady-in-waiting is going to use it as an excuse for her dallying."

Noble Woman #1: "'Least it appears to be a pair of despairs and a single sloth this time rather than desire."

Noble Woman #2: "Oh, don't mention those undiginified creatures, no sense of taste or modesty. Sloth, you say? Oh, that girl is most certainly going to use this as an excuse. *sigh*"

(to Sifr) I know enough about people to know that there just had to be some in Thedas who responded to the Breach and all its shenanigans like that.

And then you find out none of that was true.

The woman can become you wife and the child loses the god soul and becomes more normal.

Because they couldn't have ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES for a choice now could they?

I wish that the old god child thing would result in a game over screen that can't be avoided after you beat cory.

Yes. I need to see it (and have the option to try to help dear old dad)

Well, I wish the child would become an ally that enabled me to defeat the Big Bad of the next game at 50% difficulty.

I wanted the DR to have consequences, but good consequences, such that go very much against the grain of most people's intuitive reaction. I didn't really expect Bioware to go that far out of the mainstream, but that the child just becomes normal is boring. Still better than bad consequences though. I would've really, really hated that and it would have adversely affected my enjoyment of DAI's story.

I guess the wildly different preferences are the reason they made it into a non-issue.

I just like to see this forum if the did what I suggested. It would be fun to see how everyone hates consequences after something like that.
