Innless you are a soldier.

You can't get the Collector Assault Rifle on Xbox 360 or PC, if you don't have the ME2LCE.

You can't get the M-76 Revenant innless you are a soldier.

You can't get the Geth Pulse Rifle innless you play the game in Hardcore or Insanity difficulty's, and from what I've seen it doesn't look like it is any better then the Avenger.

So if you don't have those as choices you are stuck with the M-8 Avenger, the M-15 Vindicator, and the M-96 Mattock.

What I'd like to know is witch Assault Rifles you use and what you think of the Assault Rifle choices in ME2?

They gave away the Collector Rifle recently for free, at least on PC.

In any case, like most other weapons they need upgrades to realize their full potential.

I don't have the Mattock.  If I am using an AR it is the Vindicator since it is an excellent ranged weapon.  The Avenger isn't too bad if it is upgraded.

AR choice could have been a bit better, but really all of the categories had reduced choice outside of the DLC guns.

Mattock obviously excels for the Soldier. For everyone else, the Vindicator is just as viable as the Mattock, perhaps even a tad bit better. For squad mates, the Vindicator is a better choice than the Mattock. Despite the lackluster performance of the Geth Pulse Rifle, I might take it out for a spin once-in-a-while for a non-Soldier Shepard. I find the gun to be fun, even if it is not all that good. When I roll a Soldier I generally go with the Widow. The only times I have found the Revenant superior to the Mattock is on missions with a small number of ammo drops, mainly the disabled Collector ship and the Collector base. Generally, I take sniper rifle training for non-Soldier/Infiltrator Shepards since the Locust is functionally the same as an assault rifle.

There was a thread a while back in this forum how the Collector stuff became available for PC users. I would check that out. From what I have heard, though, the Collector Assault Rifle may be better than the Avenger, but is inferior to the Vindicator and Mattock.

I'm playing on the Xbox 360. And the Collector stuff isn't for free on Xbox live, at least not yet anyway.

Mattock and Vindicator are really the only good assault rifles in the game.

Even as a Soldier, I find the Revenant very lacking. It is essentially a "super Avenger" which is not saying much.

I know a lot of players like the Revenant on the Soldier, but I never found it all the good, regardless of difficulty (I used it on Normal and Insanity).

For non-soldiers, assault rifles are essentially backup weapons anyway, or at least that is how I play them. Pistols and SMGs cover your protection-stripping needs; the Assault Rifle serves as a good backup to the pistol and SMG if you run out of pistol ammo or if you prefer a longer-range option to the Shuriken/Tempest SMGs.

Yes, Ever since the Guns Pack was released, Mattock, Phallanx and Geth Plasma Shotgun (And Incisor?) seem to be the top choice because OP Weapons,

Of course, OP, everything is good if balanced with a great Character Setup. I just use a SMG in my Adept and pew pew them with Pull, Singularity and the other good stuff.

I only play on insanity and to me the Mattock is a nobrainer, together with warp ammo and Mirandas squad weapon bonus and AR upgrades it can kill shielded mooks in 2-4 shots, Gunships and YMIR-mechs goes down in a matter of seconds. As backup i use the widow if i'm soldier, and Locust if i'm infiltrator.

However i do agree that the variation, not just in assault rifles, but weapons in general is lackluster at best.

I tend to use the Mattock a lot as I prefer slower firing weapons that have a good punch and accuracy and I find the Mattock suits me perfectly. when not using Assault rifle I also find the Locust good too.

The Avenger is decent. I actually really like it in ME2.

The Vindicator is more of a burst-fire weapon, but it still has teeth before ME3 nerfed it.

The Revenant is a Soldier only weapon, and powerful if inaccurate.

The Geth Plasma Rifle can be obtained by playing Tali's loyalty mission on Harcore or above.

The Mattock is a real powerhouse weapon.

The Collector AR is more or less a cross between the Avenger and the Revenant.

The Mattock gets me through the game just fine.  In fact the ME 2 Mattock might be my favorite AR in the entire series (the ME 3 version seems to have less punch)

I only use my Mattock on the Soldier (+ Adrenaline Rush is WIN).

If I take AR Training on any other class I prefer the Vindicator. I really like that weapon.

The Revenant? well let's just say I'm not fond of that gun.

The Geth Pulse Rifle and Collector Rifle I find very lacking.

yeah it does but in ME3 the Cerberus Harrier rifle is an adequate replacement in terms of punch as it has the same puch as the Mattock but spits out bullets more quickly to and definitely has the Mattock's accuracy as well

In ME2, the Mattock is my Shepard's one and only. It's a great powerhouse weapon that makes short work of just about everyone so long as you have a good trigger finger. The basic Avenger is actually pretty decent, I find, especially for biotics. My Vanguard Shepard made good use of it with incendiary and cryo ammo. The soldier's disruptor ammo also makes good use of it. In ME3, there is nothing else but the Harrier for me, especially in single player, where running out of ammo is not a concern.

I like using the collector assault rifle when not playing as a soldier. I use the revenant when playing as a soldier

Avenger is my favorite. Full auto, decent damage with all upgrades, fairly accurate.

Yeah they're supposed to be modified Mattocks according to the info bar but I do tend to use it a lot as I find it a good weapon especially when equipped with a scope for long range accurracy

The only ME 2 SMG I care for is the Locust, the shuriken is ok but I don't like how it looks, and the tempest is like a mini revenant, very powerful but terrible accuracy.

The Tempest is great if working at short range (and you don't have a shotgun).  But the main reason to get it is for squad mates, who seem to be amazingly accurate with it compared to Shep...
