Is it just me, or does anybody else get the impression that whoever you chose to leave in the fade doesn't die? I mean they go out of there way to say " whoever you choose to leave behind, will LIKELY die". If you think about it, world states that potentially have Hawke dead, seems like a silly complication for bioware. Even if Hawke doesn't have a significant role in any of the future games, I'm sure they would at least have a few cameos here and there. So why would they want to create more work in the sense of having to write all the different dialogues depending on the status of Hawke in your world state?

UNLESS whoever gets left behind doesn't die, and it's just another BIG choice that is a mere illusion.

I'd love it if they actually did die.  Makes the choice have more weight.  Also, I think Bioware would love if everyone sacrificed Hawke, they wouldn't have to keep trying to portray him properly

I hope they're just dead. That choice would lose any impact it once had otherwise.

All my feels at that Varric scene would have been for nothing too.

Well wardens dead or alive can fall victim to someone who has the ability to body hop like corypheus. If another magister is still lying in wait or there's someone else who has the ability, we can very well see our left behind warden possessed by another entity...

Just speculation...

I got the impression Hawke might live somehow... but it could just be hopefulness... of course surviving there might be worse then death. So yea...
