Basically it means that your item has a chance of being masterwork, which boosts the stats of the item quite a bit, like DPS and ****.
Usually worth it, provided that you have the materials to keep trying.

It boosts the weapon's stats by a certain percentage (varies depending on the material used).
For example, if you were crafting a Mage Ice Staff and it had "10% heal on kill" and you used a masterwork (successfully) that boosts stats by 10%, the Mage Ice Staff would have 11% heal on kill now, rather than 10%, because the masterwork (if applied successfully) increases those stats.
Hope I helped. Although I feel like I made it more confusing with the example ![]()

Has anyone tried to cheat these? Like reloading 20 times until they get it?

I've done this. Works just fine.

While you can do that, I think it is generally better to go for masterwork abilities like chance of hidden blades on hit or gain 5 guard on hit than it is to go for the masterwork stat bonus.Has anyone tried to cheat these? Like reloading 20 times until they get it?

It's possible but there's a trick to it. The chance of sucess is actually rolled when you pick up the mat, not when you use it. So if a given mat fails when you use it, then it will always fail even if you reload.
You get around this by crafting a bunch of throwaway items, and noting which one in the sequence results in a success. Then reload and craft more throwaway items until you get to the successful one. Then craft your desired item.

This is what I expected when I tried it a few times.

I'm not a fan of that 30-40% chance of masterwork myself. Like, it's a dragon tooth. It's too gorram special to be a lottery ticket! I'm just glad that the essence of perfection item is in the game, since it's 100%, but you better use it wisely since I think there's only one in the entire game.

Gorram lol, a browncoat like me I see.
The dragon tooth is a crock, I had ten of them one time and got 2 Masterwork, I didn't use a calculator or anything but by my math I should have gotten four. Then I get a masterwork on the one ironbark I had. The game may say on thing, but I still think it's just random lol.

Yeah man, Browncoat for life.
Funny I got a masterwork on that one ironbark item too, and I squandered plenty of dragon's teeth. I don't think I ever got anything from those bear claws.

Honestly, I'd rather use something else like generate guard on hit or increase stamina/mana regeneration. I don't find the 10% state boost worth it. Now if it would be somewhere around 50-70% stat increase, that'd be more appealing...

Like Precursor Meta I can't see a real great advantage.
If I understood correctly, then the slot for something special is "wasted" for a small increase of stats, right?
Really wonder, if this is worth it, as I found some specials like "3 block on hit" invaluable.

You are trying to apply the 40% chance as a group, that is not how probability works. The percentage is for each individual crafted item not as a group. So each crafted item has a percentage chance of being a masterwork. If using a dragon's tooth (which gives a 40% chance of masterwork), crafted item one has a 60% chance of no masterwork. Using a second dragon tooth crafted item two has the same chance of no masterwork which is 60%.
So if you are lucky you can actually have 10 masterwork items (because of the ten dragon teeth) or if you are very unlucky you can have none.

Hi
I always save before crafting something if I'm going for "Masterworks", if it fails I reload and try again.
I've had it fail a number of times but after 3 or 4 tries it eventually works.
I've got everyone I regularly use, equipped with Masterwork armor and weapons.
My rogue armor is 232 armor rating with a lot of perks and I have it on 3 characters, my main, Sera, and Cole.
By the way, not only Dragon Teeth give 40% chance of Masterworks, another one is White Wyvern Hide.
I'm not sure if there are others or not but I've crafted a number of items at masterwork level and I've only killed 5 of the dragons so far, mostly using the Wyvern hides.

Hmm when I tried using masterwork chance upgrades (from 3 bear claws) I was 100% sure reloading had nothing to do with it from like an hour of testing. 1st one in stack always failed, second always succeeded and 3rd also always failed. I came to the conclusion that the chance of success was rolled into the item on pickup rather than use. I could have been wrong but I'm pretty sure I reloaded like 50-100 times then stopped and instead was able to get the masterwork item 100% of the time using second bear claw on each "real" or "serious" try (crafting a dummy masterwork then crafting the masterwork I wanted to get bonus on).
That said I got more mileage out of Guard on Hit, Heal % on hit and Heal % over 10 seconds on Being Hit. Who needs a 10% stat upgrade when you're whole team are Guard/Barrier/Heal machines? It also gives you room to make cool looking armor and weapons rather than the most optimal mats and stats. ![]()
I toned it down a bit though my second playthrough. ![]()

Mind you, it appears that the chance's are rolled before hand (don't know if it's on region or area load) rather than rolled on each try. So you'll never actually experience the randomness by just reloading a save.

If you failed masterwork with ONE particular item like "iron bark" or "dragon's teeth",
you will fail everytime you reload previous save.
So,I conducted an experiment.
Lets say I had "Iron bark"
I go to a merchant and make 5 copies of it.
Now I go and save in front of the crafting table.
I try to make a masterwork, but I fail. (but thats ok, I can always duplicate more)
I try again, another fail.
My 3rd attempt? SUCCESS!!
Now I know that my 3rd masterwork attempt will always succeed!
So, now I reload the previous save.
This time I make 2 cheapest masterwork to throw away.
The 3rd one, I know it will work, so I use this chance to make my desired masterwork item.
Best crafting system ever.

Hi
I just finished messing with it again.
I created a Masterwork Spiked Bow, ended up 200 dps when I got done adding attachments.
But I was unable to create a second bow for Sera.
I tried many times and didn't succeed.
I'm going to come back later and try again and see if there is some kind of timer on it, or a different save will make a difference.
In the past I've created several copies of the same masterwork item in the same session, (I created several of the same masterwork axe) but not this time.
By the way, I have 8 dragons teeth, I had 9 before creating the bow, and I'm pretty sure I used one earlier, and I've only killed 6 of the dragons so they must drop someplace else as well? Or do you get more than one sometimes?
And as I said before, White Wyvern Hide, (I had 3 of those) have the same advantages as dragon's teeth.
Now I just have to figure out how to create that second bow?
