Before I start need to say I play on a PS4 as a FYI.

I know this is going to sound absolutely crazy and I am not quite sure how to put it in words but I will try.

Today I started my ninth run of DA-I. I have played mostly as Elven Mages so far but one run as a Qunari Warrior and one as a Elven Rogue. I have always REALLY preferred playing as a Mage since DA-O. I just have.

Up until this point however, I have been really disappointed with the power level of Mages in DA-I esp after playing as both a Warrior and Rogue. I have also been frustrated with a few bugs here and there and really how weak I feel as a Mage esp in the beginning.

That was until today for some reason. I finally decided I would play my “canon” Inquisitor. I could tell right from the beginning something was different for the better. First, the treasure drops I was finding in the beginning were so much better than any of my other run throughs and I swear my Mage is doing way more damage than she has before. (Yes I am playing on the same difficulty.)

And then…on none of my previous runs I have been able to complete the first requisition in the Hinterlands because the locks would not drop . For some reason today I finished without even leaving the Cross Roads! Then the loot coming up on just the first few hours is so much better. I have already (just a few hours in) have picked up  Tier 2 schematics for a staff and Mage armour. And two really powerful staffs have dropped already. I swear it’s like I am playing a different game.

But it’s the feel of it that has made the biggest difference. I really can’t explain it other than to say now it feels like a Mage should feel. Like Hawke or HoF did. I know its not my imagination because it’s been a real struggle at first cuz I have always felt so underpowered this early in the game. But WOW it’s so different now.

And I am also all of sudden getting new companion banter (while out on quests) that wasn’t there before. This is my ninth time through I would have remembered any of from before.

I really hope it keeps up because it just is so much nicer and feels so much more like a DA game now.

I am not crazy I promise!

I think you're right, I don't think I saw it in patch notes but since P3 the loot drops seem *far* more zone- and level-appropriate.  Maybe zone, since I am the right level for the zones I've been in.

Frex: in Hissing Wastes at levels 12-14 or so, I would routinely get trash grey items from level 2-6, and blue items for characters level 6-8.  Not helpful.  Now I'm seeing drops that consistently match the level of the area.

I am going to make a WAG and say this is contributing to the feel of your mage.  Mage has the lowest base damage and highest multipliers (generally).  DPS doesn't matter, it's the "damage:" stat on the item that affects abilities.  Immolate has, what, a 300% multiplier?  So if you got crappy drops before and your staff damage was 29, Immolate baseline is 87, but if you now have a 44 damage staff, it's 132.  This is baseline before +Attack%, and modifiers like if you have a skill ring vs. their resistances, etc.

Because of their low base weapon damage, Mage can feel like a very slow start.  However I found that mage could bang out spells more often than, say, my archer rogue's special shots.  As you get into ridiculous things like Fire Mine (1600% I think?) and have a higher base-damage staff (say, 59), things get all explody (944 baseline damage).

yes once I get to about level 10 -12 things start to get way better. I am curious so see what happens now since whatever happened happened. I have not used those T2 schematics yet as I just made it back to Haven after our first trip to the Hinterlands.

What's insane is quoting an entire post to highlight two words without trimming any of the rest of it out  ;)

... Anyway!

That's an interesting observation, OP. My latest mage playthrough has been feeling more powerful as well, now that I think about it. I found an awesome staff in the emerald graves that I've never even seen in previous playthroughs. :P

Awwww,,,,,The lad doth protest too much, methinks. Just knowing I have irritated someone like you has made my whole day. (You're trying too hard. You should have stopped at two that way it looks like you are apathetic but adding more shows you are easily ruffled.)

I would say it's a combination of increased skill (from having played the game often enough now) and blind luck (treasure is mostly random; you can save before looting chests and reload if you ever feel it's just too punishing). The game hasn't been patched on PS4 yet, so nothing is actually different.

Anyway, it feels good to get good drops, I agree. Hopefully your luck continues and you have more fun with it this time.

Hey, I'm not one to criticize such laziness, even if it 's not very friendly to your readers. But... his post?

Hey now...

I'm an arse and even I know that's going a bit far.

If she likes the game, then so be it? Just the same as you have every right to hate the game?

Oh, and would you be more sympathetic to her accident if she hated the game, I wonder? ;)

Anyway, OP. Glad your game is working well.. I've had the opposite effect, unfortunately. It is rather strange, how in some PTs things work fine then in others... not so much.

Heya!  I'm glad things are going better for you this time around in DA.  I had good luck with staff drops as well, and I even got a Tier 3 staff schematic before I did Wicked Hearts this time around.  Hopefully your drop rate remains as good.  I also hope you can be more mobile soon.  I'm glad you're around to post.  :)
