Pretty certain that someone would have posted this already, but this is such a massive issue for me I have to (re)post this.

You know that first conversation you have with Cole back at Skyhold? The one where you get to exercise your authority as inquisitor and decide whether or not Cole is able to stay and "help" or drive him away, forgotten and never to be seen again? I for one will never be able to forget because it always ended the same way, with the screen blacking out followed by the game crashing mere seconds later.

I didn't even know that there was a conversation until I gave up and just looked it up on YouTube after trying a repair and clean reinstall of the game before a full set of driver revert and updates. This has not changed even after each of the 3 patches were installed. The dialogue was actually fairly interesting IMO and my impressions of Cole were not much, I might have even told him to leave in a subsequent replay.

But the fact that what was supposed to be an empowering choice has left me with nothing but ire at being robbed of a choice I was expected to be able to make freely now leaves me with a poor set of choices: willingly crash my own play-through or give up on what others had revealed to be an unusual and intriguing character.

It would follow that a crash this game-wrecking also comes without any prompt because not once have I seen an error message to even tell me what the problem might actually be. BioWare I find myself and DA:I both to be left wanting and until you actually deliver a working product as was expected I am unlikely to ever to continue to play what was otherwise a very promising game.

Please BioWare, any responses or attempts to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I see this is an old thread. I came across it via Google trying to find a fix for this. I've tried all the usual fixes (turning the graphics very low, running as admin, starting from Origin rather than directly, repairing the game, uninstalling/reinstalling/repairing drivers, etc.), and nothing I do will allow me to recruit Cole. I can't believe there are no fixes for this. I saw via Google search that it's been reported as a bug for a while now, and nobody seems to know how to fix it? This is incredibly frustrating. It looks like I'm going to have to learn how to use a hex editor and find the flag that says "Cole was recruited, despite your crash to desktop" and fix it myself. Yay. I get to spend hours to learn how to fix a top of the line game, myself! *sigh*

Well, I did spend several hours mucking around in the files (using Mod Maker, Save File Editor, and other tools), played with graphic settings, all kinds of stuff. Eventually, I thought maybe it was some incorrectly set plot flag or a missing plot flag or something, so I went back to an earlier save point. In this case, I went back to after I recruited the mages and before the In Your Heart Shall Burn quest. Before I did that quest, I went and recruited Iron Bull (I hadn't previously; was planning on doing it after Skyhold), and I spoke to all advisors and companions at Haven just to make sure. Then I did that quest, went through the battle, etc., got to Skyhold, saved as soon as possible (there 's a LONG no-save period in there). I did the initial Skyhold quests, finding the War Room and going to the Undercroft to talk to the blacksmith. Then I did the Undercroft quests (tinted some armour, did some Skyhold decor), went and talked to some (but not all) companions, including Vivienne, Iron Bull (and let him show me the thing he wanted me to see), Sera, and a couple of NPCs (Scout Harding, Adan). I finally got brave enough to try recruiting Cole and.... it worked. I have NO IDEA why. Apparently, whatever I did or didn't do previously set some flag or another that was preventing the "Cole is recruited now" script from running or.... something. I don't know. But it did work. Eventually. Thankfully. I was getting pretty frustrated, to say the least....
