Personally I don't think Hawke is dead at all or will remain dead if left behind in the fade, seeing as Flemeth states "It is only when you fall, that you learn whether you can fly", when foreshadowing Here Lies the Abyss in DA2. It also makes sense to me to keep Alistair or one of the other wardens around as a voice of reason for whatever is going on at Weisshaupt.
With that in mind, I fully believe now that Hawke is the preferable choice.

Alistair will die pretty soon due to the taint anyway, so leave him behind.

There is actually a slim chance that the Warden, the Hero of Ferelden, might find a cure for that. Maybe Alistair doesn't necessarily have to die. Depends on your world state, of course.

Female Hawke everytime. Male Hawke too, but was a little more hesitant with him.

That's an interesting connection!
I think the moment loses some drama if Hawke or Alistair/Loghain/Stoud aren't dead, but the choice does say that they're likely to die, so it certainly works, doesn't it.

One the run where I left Hawke behind that's the angle I was going for as well, since that was a world state where I didn't have many other wardens mentioned (ultimate sacrifice HoF, Anders dead, Carver as a templar).
When I left Loghain on my first run it was less about him vs. Hawke as individuals, as it was because I didn't think it made sense for that Inquisitor to think Loghain was the only sane warden left. I mean, we know Blackwall is a fake, but I don't think the Inquisitor does. Plus that was a world state where Leliana was romanced in Origins (so there was dialogue about her knowing how to contact the HoF even if she didn't know exactly where he was) and then that particular Hawke showed up and had his dialogue about sending Carver and Anders away since they were wardens (and as with Blackwall, we know Anders is crazy, but the Inquisitor doesn't), so the flipped choice made more sense to me there.

In general, I think Alistair's probably going to do more good for the world then poor Hawke, and considering their shared destination, him being a Warden will likely help the Order in the Anderfels see some reason. I hope? Alistair also seems a lot more mature here in Inquisition then he did back in Origins.
Hawke, well... most of my Hawke's just seemed so utterly broken. It seemed like they just wanted out, especially if they romanced Anders then killed him. Which quite a few of my Hawke's did.
If Stroud's around, though... yeah, he hits it.

It probably doesn't matter in the long run; flip a coin and make a decision that will later be 'dexed and mentioned for two sentences.

So I only played through once in DAI but had Stroud as the warden because Bethany had gone with the wardens in DA2.
This play through My DAO hero married Anora and became king-consort/Commander of the Grey at Vigils Keep before vanishing entirely from the known world by going through a mirror with Morrigan in Witch hunt. In DA2 my Hawke was a mage and Carver joined the Templars so does that mean Stroud is not going to be the warden Hawke is looking for? it will be Alistair? Alistair showed up in DA2 during the end of Act 2 against the Qunari.
I never knew before this thread that there was other options beside Stroud. So it can be Alistair? Not Loghain because he's dead due to Alistair taking his head in DAO.

Yup, if Alistair stayed with the wardens it'll be him (if he's king, dead, or drunk and Loghain is alive that's when you get Loghain. And if Alistair is king or drunk and Loghain is dead that's when you get Stroud, like you did the first time).

......But poor Varric if you choose Hawke.

I'll choose Alistair over Hawke every single time, no question. Since Alistair is my Warden's LI, killing him is just as painful as killing my Warden would be. I like my Warden more than Hawke, so Hawke stays.
Most of my imported Hawkes have no LI, so it's not like they are leaving anyone behind (except Varric, poor guy).

it really wont matter in the end, but I'd have to choose Alistair since he's the highest ranking (left) of the southern mages, has dragon blood, and potential to be king (just in case) he's also seen as a hero of the Blight. He's got more commendations than Hawke who's now living in hiding and a pariah due to folks thinking him/her as starting the mage/templar war, etc

It's as permanent as the writers want it to be.

Heh, I actually like the way it goes when they're leaving lovers and siblings behind better. I thought the way Hawke whispers "Safe harbours, Isabela" was a nice touch (although I've read that all the others just get a generic "Sorry, Fenris/Anders/Merril", which is too bad), and made it more engaging.
If anything, I think it's sadder to have someone die without many people to mourn for them. I think it's too bad that Fiona doesn't say more if you leave Alistair there for the same reason.
Actually, that reminds me - who does Varric write to if Hawke has no LI and Carver/Bethany died in the deep roads? It it Gamlen? Or is the line totally skipped?

So I should get Alistair then since he is a warden and not the king.
But who to choose. My sarcastic Hawke who instigated the mage rebellion and pretty much dared the Knight Commander to attack her at the intro to Act 3 in DA2. Or Alistair who in my DAO game shirked his duties to the throne by saying he didn't want it. So my noble cousland warden married Anora and became king instead. My HoF saw Alistair as a bro but that was about it. I'd probably sacrifice him. I'm to close to my sarcastic Hawke who romanced Merrill and is Varric's best friend.

Now imagine the difficulty if you were having to choose between Hawke and your HoF.

Stroud is better and hawke does not live in any of my playthroughs.
It seems a fitting end too.
