Curious, bored and I have not come across any information on this yet.

 

There are large glowing blocks in all of the levels with a skull in the middle.  They look like large versions of the shards from single player.

 

They don't seem to be in the same place all the time, so my first guess was that they indicate a place where someone died in a previous match, similar to demon souls blood marks.  They can be found in all three areas against all three factions and seem very out of place with these environment designs.

 

Why are they there?  What purpose do they serve?  Does standing near one give some kind of benefit?  Were the level designers just bored when they added them?

All factions?  I thought those only showed up vs demons.  I'll have to look closer next time.  I think they are just level decorations.

they are just flavor decorations against demons. If you look, Red templars have red lyrium everywhere, and the venatori have barricades. if all you ever see are the shards, its probably a bug.

Yes. These are part of the cover props that appear in the levels when fighting the demon faction. However there might be a few instances where they also appear as general props regardless of the current enemy faction.
