I'm curious, what was everyone's favourite origin in, well, Origins? And what's your favourite in Inquisition? Do you have preferences and have they changed? Does your World State/Origins origin (I should find a better way to phrase that..) affect how you choose your character in Inquisition?

I'm mostly interested in others' opinions, but if anyone is interested in my thoughts:

My favourite origins were Surana/F!Tabris >>> Cousland > Brosca/Aeducan/Amell > Mahariel > M!Tabris

That said, I enjoy each of them in their own right. As for Inquisition, Lavellan is my favourite with Adaar and Mage!Trevelyan tied for relatively distant seconds, but again, I like them all. My World State had so little to do with choosing my character on my first playthrough that I didn't even realise until Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts (which I did after Here Lies the Abyss) that my first/canon WS would be F!Surana/Mage!Hawke/F!Mage!Lavellan (that all romanced rogue ladies and an Ambassador)...oops?

Female Mahariel is my canon, and my favourite way to go. Loved the unique letter my Mahariel Warden sent my Lavellan.

Following that...probably dwarf noble.

My canon worldstate is female Surana, which I've split between female mage Adaar and male mage Lavellan. I rather like the idea of non-human mages saving the world. They're kind of the most reviled group. Plus my Hawke was a blood mage, even if she's forgotten it.

Other than that, I like Brosca matched with Cadash. Casteless and surfacer, saving the world. Shows what Orzammar knows.

In either game, elves (especially Dalish) are usually my favourite to play. Their culture and history is pretty interesting. Though it has all taken a turn for the tragic with the revelations in DAI.

In origins, I would have to say Brosca, because he had to make a living day by day, not knowing what tommorrw would bring, whether he would live to see it or not. He really didn't want to see Rita become a noble hunter, but didn't have a choice, because if you were smart, you'll know not to cross Berhat.
The city elf came in second place.
My choice for inquisition is Cadash of course. I tend to like playing the criminal that becomes part of something that's bigger than himself. He has more reasosn to freak out about this strange mark on his hand. The refusal of the call played a big part in his story, but he knew that the Maker chose him for his dimming of his faith.

Noble Dwarf Origin.

Inquisition's "origin" is a paragraph, if that, and does not matter and does not count.

My top one is F!Tabris (in the second half of the origins she's basically a medieval the bride from kill bill) the second is F!Surana. As for the inquisition I have to say MageF!Lavellan(I like how she is the first to the keeper, but the game handles that kinda poorly, especially in a certain late mission). I guess i really like elves and mages :P

I've been meaning to go back and do a Mahariel playthrough, with what we know now. The letter is a nice touch, I agree.

I like playing as social outcasts or criminals becoming something more too. The idea of a dwarf with what's essentially a magic hand, called to do what may not even be their gods' work amuses me too. I think what's nice about being a surfacer is that you are given the freedom to believe in the Maker or the Ancestors/Stone/whatever and it all works. Did you go with the full "yes I'm the Herald of Andraste" thing or did he believe in the Maker and believe he was doing His work even if he wasn't "chosen?"

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much love the dwarves are getting here. As for the paragraph, you're not wrong, it doesn't make a huge difference but I thought some of the references and racial dialogue was nice.

Absolute favorite is female city elf, easily. Carving a path of wanton destruction through the arl's castle, thumbing her nose at the captain of the guard, and then shocking Cailan with the news is absolutely brilliant. Always wondered if he was having second thoughts, just for a minute, about using the newest warden recruit to save the day. Gotta give him credit for being so diplomatic about it though.

Apart from that, in terms of unfolding story throughout the game: male human warrior, romancing Morrigan. Getting revenge on Arl Howe is very satisfying. I like it for world state imports too.

Female Cousland always for Origins. And I guess Lavellan for Inquisition, havnt played the new DA enough to have a favorite inquisitor yet, but given all the elfy stuff I'd have to choose that.

I like pairing Mahariel with a mage Lavellan for Dalish superiority. XD My canon is Amell > mage Lavellan for extra magey goodness. Also Brosca and Cadash or Aeducan and Cadash is always a good pairing too.

For my Lady Adaar, I had a female Cousland who married Alistair and became Queen so that was cool too. :D You could also do a human nobility playthrough with Cousland and Trevelyan warriors.

In origins it's dwarf noble, an outcast tricked into or framed for murdering their brother. It was incredibly tense going back to Orzammar to get the dwarf support when I knew everyone there hated me and blamed me for Trian and Endrin's death.

I love all of the origins. The underdog elves in their struggle with humans. Stubborn and proud dwarfs in the ruins of their former glory. Noble seeking revenge. My canon is the freedom loving mage who wants to break out of the circle with his best buddy and ends up with smoking hot Morrigan.

Tabris, Lavellan.

My canon Inky has quite the backstory.

Scar near her eye - she nearly lost it while proving herself as a hunter, and worthy of her Vallaslin.

Also, her Vallaslin is that of Ghilan'nain, the Halla mother - because her parents were the clan's Halla herders.

Headcanons.

A dozen cannons on the back of my head.

Origins: human noble warrior

Inquisition: human noble warrior

While I usually dislike humanocentrism (one reason for my preference for Cole's spirit path), I dislike it even more when I play a non-human in a human-dominated setting and the game "forgets" about it most of the time, so I decided to go with the "safe" i.e. least potentially immersion-breaking choice. Warrior is my go-to because I'm a melee gal at heart and an inveterate tank in particular, I just hate hiding behind other people in combat. In Origins, there was also the big appeal of getting the mabari right from the start -- and I ended up liking the Cousland family a lot, which made losing them a real punch in the guts. In Inquisition, I specifically wanted to roleplay a devout but open-minded Andrastian with strong Chantry ties, so the Trevelyans were the perfect fit. The whole "Herald of Andraste" thing adds a great touch to that mindset because it demands so much soul-searching from a believer.

I'm not big on replaying games, in no small part because I'm too slow and methodical, so no other Origins character of mine really got past the very beginning. I did like the dwarven noble though I ended up hating that family, heh. What a bunch of backstabbers. Gorim was great, though, and really should have taken Oghren's place as a much less stereotypical dwarf companion. The Dalish origin left me cold and the mage one was so annoying, "thanks" to that intolerable tosser Jowan, that I never finished it. The other two origins weren't even interesting enough to try.

If I replay Inquisition, it'll be with an elven mage to see race/class dialog options that my canon Inquisitor didn't get. Dwarves and qunari are too disconnected from the whole story and premise to have any appeal. I really want and need a character who is "tied" to a game's plot instead of being dragged into it as a sulky clueless outsider.

Dalish elf/Mahariel, but my favourite was using the mod that allowed dalish elf keeper apprentices. :) I really hated starting in a circle as a mage.

But they were all enjoyable as -some- combination, though just like in DA:I, I have limited knowledge of the dwarf origins. I like dwarves, i just don't play them.

I'll just quickly add my preference in DA:I; Qunari/Vashoth > Dalish > Human > Dwarf.

He told them that he liked the title, but when it came to not being in front of them, he wasn't quite sure exactly what his plan was.

Aw, no love for Bhelen throwing you under the bus then having the audacity to "let" you help him get the throne after testing your loyalty? :P But yes, Gorim was fantastic. And Jowan...I'd say his intentions may have been fine, but he spends so much time tripping over himself that it was only a matter of time before he brought someone else down with him.

While I like outsiders getting caught up in something so much larger, I'll admit it makes little sense to have this person that literally just fell out of the sky lead the Inquisition if they don't want to and/or have no connection whatsoever to the Chantry when you've got Cassandra and Leliana right there. Elven mages work well towards the end of the game, though, especially if you romance Solas.

For origins it would go Brosca > Surana > tabris > amell > Mahariel >M!aeducan > F!aeducan > cousland

For inquisition it would go Cadash/Lavellan/Adaar > mage! Trevelyan > Trevelyan

My canon is Brosca and Adaar, and I absolutely love both of these origins, I guess I just prefer the underdog and the common people to the noble origins (however I slightly prefer male Aeducan to female because you can have that side quest with mardy and your child if you slept with her). Also I want to say that Surana is definetly my second favorite and the best of the elves in origins in my opinion, as a dalish or city elf you know where you belong, or have at least some connection to your fellow elves. it isn't a great place to belong admittedly but it is a place you fit in. A circle elf doesn't belong in either of those groups, raised in the multiracial circle and leads to good roleplaying as they try and figure out their place in the world. With Brosca you don't even exist by dwarf shaperate standards, and seeing a literal nobody rise up to become a paragon, plus giving you a good reason to support bhelen and your sister. I also love the relationship between Brosca and their mother, a clearly flawed women who was broken by her environment and the abandonment of brosca's father and how she resents them for their fathers actions while also having (rare moments) that shows she does love her child underneath it. I also loved Leske, he was my pre-varric varric, only without the loyalty which led to an even more painful scene.

For inquisition, I'm just tired of being nobility as a human so I can't stomach Trevelyan as anything other than a mage, and that's only because of the circle aspect opening up interesting opinions. However I love all the other origins, but cadash is a little to similar to my warden to be in my canon universe, and while I like their origins I dont like how the player elves look (no offense to those who do), so I went with Adaar.

In DA:O my favorite was the noble Dwarf origin, it really played well with the entire story of the game. For Inquisition they are completely pointless and I don't care for a few lines of text that really tell me nothing.

I prefer (Rogue) Cousland because I enjoy acting like an underhanded ****** to Howe when he visits Highever.

In DA:I, I prefer Mage Trevelyan because:

  1. I like magic.
  2. Humans are my favourite.
  3. Human mages receive quite a lot of content.  Plus, it was the one where I felt most connected to the story.
