I haven't played all the DA:I ones yet to decide..but for Origins Dalish Elf and City Elf. The are ALL great, I love each one, but the Dalish Elf is my canon, and then my city elf reaver who just does not give a F**** and destroys every foe in his way after what happened to him(also does not romance anyone he is heartbroken)....yeah those are the most enjoyable for me
Favourite origins?

In Origins my favorite was female Cousland (followed closely by female Amell). For Inquisition i prefer female mage Trevelyan.

Surana is great because she's pretty player defined in terms of background. You actually get to choose your own heritage, basically.
Cousland is just good for a very ASOIAF feeling character.
Mahariel I found was the most fun to roleplay, and for the outsider feel. Loved female in particular, with the Tamlen gutpunch. Also cool how much recognition it gets in later DLC and Dragon Age 2.

I liked mage origins because of the fact you enter the fade early on and human noble because you get dog early and have a short romance with a friendly noble family. City elf was ok but I hate how you can be a piehole and blame the people who went with you to kill the Tim Curry character instead of taking the full blame but i did like how if your male city elf you have to save the girls while female you have to save yourself and your female friends.

Male Cousland>Romanced Morrigan>Saved the Tower Mages>Saved Connor>Crowned King Bhelen>Ended the Werewolf curse>destroyed the Anvil of the Void>Made Alistair marry Anora>Killed Loghain>>Performed the Dark Ritual>Killed the Archdemon>Remained with the Grey Wardens>Conscripted Nathan Howe>Let the Architect Live>Saved Amaranthine>Went through the Eluvian.... now on a quest to end the Warden calling.

1.) Female City Elf. True underdog story, best investment in the "core end-of-story quests" imo.
2.) Female Elf Mage. Three strikes against you for being a woman, a mage, and an elf. They also leave your pre-Circle background blank, so you can fill in the blanks yourself. The Mage Origin itself is very compelling in my opinion, but having the added prejudice of being an elf to being a mage (and exploring what that means to the character), and a woman fawned over by a conflicted Templar (one of her jailers), just makes it that much more dramatic and "human' imo.
3.) Dwarf Commoner. I think the Origin itself is very well-written, with a lot of great roleplaying moments. The rest is interesting too. Talk about a true rags to riches story.

Female City Elf and female Cousland. They were quite immersive for my roleplay.
Also, it's perfect to have grey warden Alistair romanced with elf and King Alistair romanced with Cousland.

Origins: Tabris, Brosca, Surana
Inquisition: Lavellan, Cadash

Lavellan mage is my favourite DA protagonist so far! I do wish their clan would get more screentime one way or another, even indirectly (though I prefer stuff coming up as part of their current life or future rather than past) but it is nice how there are hints about both unpleasant and promisingly friendly aspects of dalish. Most of all the journey they go through is so world-changing for them, the only reason I wish for loads of DLC, and I wish it passionately, is to get into my Lavellan's thoughts afterwards. I would had chosen city elf if available, but now I feel amazingly lucky my initial playthrough went like this.
Cadash hasn't impressed me particularly, they won't fit into plot the same way, but maybe I'm not flexible enough; I generally like possibility to shape my experience, moreso than requirement to go through everything multiple times to see whole story (works in Chrono Trigger and mostly in DAO but 999 Hours bored me after 1st time, sorry). I'm so curious about playing as qunari, and will get into that after a small break.
I liked playing Origins as male Surana and female Mahariel. Other attempts before or after failed. Dwarf commoner sounds like the best hero logically, but I didn't relate to them. Elven lore seems always most fascinating, even if I dislike the angry dalish type. My Lavellan wasn't angry person, but surprisingly turned out bit preachy about elven gods, because it was just too fun.
Maybe next DA concentrates less on elves, others deserve attention too, and I don't think anyone can challenge Mahariel and Lavellan stories. Or maybe the whole series grows into mere elven hell for me.
I try to mix world states so my protagonists wouldn't overlap too much, even if it means missing comments some characters might make.

Inquisition: Lavellan, with Adaar as a runner-up.
All human origins are last on my list due to being too unoriginal (although mage human origins are slightly better).

Aw, no love for Bhelen throwing you under the bus then having the audacity to "let" you help him get the throne after testing your loyalty?
*growl*
The only way that'd be tolerable would be to not do my canon sacrifice ending -- because in that case, I could rub brother dearest's nose in the fact that not only does he owe his throne entirely to the sibling he betrayed, but he'll also remain in her shadow in both life and death. Kings come and go, Paragons are forever.
Elven mages work well towards the end of the game, though, especially if you romance Solas.
I'm too asexual and specifically too not-into-men to do that, I'm afraid ... and if I wasn't, the difference in power would still make it a no-go even before the big reveal. Solas is great as a friend as well as a great mentor on some issues, but what I heard about his romance from other people made it sound like nothing close to an equal relationship.

In Origins, I only ever played Cousland and Amell. Cousland wins hands down.
In Inquisition, so far I've done noble Trevelyan, mage Trevelyan, and Cadash. I still prefer humans over all, but I actually like the Carta back story a lot more.

Human Noble Warriors for the win! Also Human Mages are equally awesome, but I personally prefer the warriors.

You do realize that both Lavellan and Cadash are present as spies, right?

I prefer being a human noble (hey, the perks of power are attractive), but I also like being a mage - so in DA:I I was finally able to do both at the same time as mage Trevelyan. In DA:O, I certainly preferred the Cousland storyline and eventually put up with being a warrior for the human noble origin (but I played a Dalish mage first to get my mage fix).

Favorite Origin story ? It would have to be the Circle Mage. Why ? Because it is the Origin that gives you the highest amount of XP. It is the Origin story that gives you the most number of codexes and enemies to fight through in an Origin story.
Additionally, with what we know of Duncan in Dragon Age The Calling, it would make the most sense for him to visit Ferelden Circle of Magi as opposed to elsewhere to look for recruits first. He already had warriors and rogues, Daveth and Jory as Grey Warden recruits so it would make sense for him to go and find a mage to be a potential Grey Warden.
Even in Dragon Age Inquisition my favorite background is that of the Circle Mage. You alone among the other potential Inquisitors have the highest probability and the most reasons of being present in the Conclave and to actually wander about to come across the Divine, Corypheus and the Grey Wardens which then resulted in you getting the Anchor.

Origin: Cousland. Just great story. Weirdly, my canon warden is an Amell. I still like Magi Origin however, since I really love mages & lores of magic & well... let's say it, Cullen. ![]()
In Inquisition it's Lavellan (mage). Being First is quite interesting, I'm RP-ing my mage having very original point-of-view, not seeing magic like Circle mages do.

Good point about Daveth and Jory, I hadn't considered the classes from Duncan's POV before.

Ha! I've only done one full playthrough with Aeducan and sided with Harrowmont but that is just perfect.
Ah, would skip a Solasmance then. I've not romanced him yet either for pretty much the same reasons, though I've seen snippets of it that were interesting lore-wise. I don't actually know much about the relationship itself, admittedly. I suppose I really shouldn't be recommending it without at the very least researching it more ![]()
