Then my friend said, "Ah that explains the whole drama about people being upset at GLAAD as said people think DA:I didn't do enough." (On that note my friend doesn't agree with said people.)

I was gobsmacked. BioWare "didn't do enough?"

He went on to describe what he read on Tumblr and several social networks and I couldn't believe it.

I know this topic is a few days old, but I've only just seen it and wanted to focus on this specific point.

The social networks, and Tumblr specifically, can be extremely insular, and lead to giant feedback loops started by one person whose post is then reblogged hundreds or thousands of times, further commented on, which is then reblogged, and so on, all by people who have the same opinion, with nary a counter to be seen. Some people on there act as if other Tumblr users are representative of an entire group -- I saw one negative posting directed toward female Dorian fans -- when that is not the case.

I have a tumblr and I purposely avoid this kind of drama, only following a smallish group of people that primarily post art, fanfic, DA news, or other similar things. And until recently I used it to stalk David Gaider. That's pretty much it.

So just ignore all of that crap and focus on the fun things and you (well, your friend) should be fine.

I think they were talking about how tumblr was saying bioware didnt do enough.

Tumblr is filled with extremely militant, hypocritical people on both sides of the issue.  But lately one side has gotten far more toxic and they have essentially become exactly like the same people they're fighting against.

Krem is He I agree and should be referred to He, even if I feel my character should be allowed to be a rude or aggressive Inquisitor. But your right, this is a different topic. Sorry, out of likes for the day so I wanted to chime in.

I don't care how Krem wants to be referred I call her Krem. Same Blackwall I call him Thom man really use your real name.

I didn't. I wasn't the only one. Not long ago I read an article — was it PC Gamer? — from someone who also didn't realise and went ahead and tried to romance him as a woman. So if it comes as a shocker to you, you are obviously better than people like me at reading virtual characters. ;)

Lol I saw a cute, nicely written piece on The Guardian's website called My boyfriend in Dragon Age: Inquisition broke my heart when he told me he was gay. This also convinced me to flirt and pick the special star option (asking him about the flirting) the second time I played a fem Inquisitor, which paid off with a really charming reaction from him.

So yeah, not everyone knew he was gay before hand. I knew only the barest bit of info on the various LI (names and orientations) because I avoided most of the pre-release stuff on the forums. However, I certainly did NOT expect it to be handled in the way it was. It was a pleasant surprise, emphasis on the 'surprise.'

I actually wish I had gone into it completely blind, because as it was I was sitting there (during the father tavern scene) alternating among grimacing in sympathy at the scene, sadness for him, and stunned amazement that Bioware went this route. This was my first play of the game as my normal default female mage character, whom I had planned on romancing Cullen with, so there was no "*SOB* The guy I like is gay! Why me?!" reaction, and I was able to experience the revelation from more of a neutral perspective.

The problem with Tumblr folks  is they think they represent EVERYONE.

This thread is becoming a big team A and team B of people attacking each other. The real issue should really be why I can't have long hair as a qunari.

Glorious red hair that can be in a pony tail. Why!?

Sorry, off topic..

editing my post because wanted to reply to this..

Hah... sorry to contribute to the topic digression. I won't posting anything further than this.

Regarding Qunari hair, Bioware could borrow ideas from Blizzard and the hair their female draenei (space goats) have. Some of those looks would be FABULOUS on the Qunari.

FABULOUS HAIR, and spacegoats.. Mmm.. creeper mode engaged

First, we need to get a lot more civil in here. Second, Allen made it very clear we are not playing the pronoun game.

Meanwhile there are only 4 Dark-skinned LI between DA and ME. Two of the four are gay and another one breaks up with you.

I actually think that they do okay in this aspect, but I guess that they can always improve a bit.

If we discount the non-human LI's (asari, quarian, turian, drell, qunari, but I'll leave elves since they have human skin tones), then we have:

Ashley & Kaidan

Miranda, Jack, & Jacob

Steve, Samantha, & Kelly (I'll include her since she unlocks paramour)

Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, & Zevran

Anders, Isabela, Merrill, Fenris, & Sebastian

Cassandra, Cullen, Blackwall, Solas, Sera, Dorian, & Josephine

That's 8 ME LI's and 16 DA LI's.

Jacob, Steve, Samantha, Isabela, Dorian, and Josephine are all dark-skinned (6 out of 24).  And Kaidan, Ashley, Zevran, and Fenris are all tanned (i.e. not light skinned).  So that would be 10 out of 24 that are 'not light skinned' or 42%.

The DA team in particular could do a little better, I guess, since Isabela, Dorian, and Josephine are the only dark-skinned LI's and that's only 3 out of 16.

The skin color aspect has to be considered in its proper social context. Remember, Bioware is a Canadian company. We have a different relationship to multiculturalism and ethnicity that the US. Non-white isn't the same as dark-skin in terms of the general social consciousness.

Kaidan and Dorian dark-skinned? huh? Doesn't look it to me, unless my monitor settings and in-game brightness were incredibly messed up. Also out of all of them, only 2 are companions, 4 if I throw in Dorian and Kaidan, but neither of them look dark-skinned to me.

Well, perhaps since "dark-skinned" is subjective, that's why.  I see Dorian as dark-skinned and Kaidan as "tanned".  I think Dorian's about as dark as Steve and Samantha, but darker than Kaidan.  I guess it's tough because skin color isn't a binary, it's a gradient.  So where does "dark skinned" begin and "tanned" end?

I definitely think that they need to have more dark-skinned companions, in general, though.  The fact that Vivienne was only the second black female companion ever in Bioware history is really not cool.

Dark-skinned or African like ethnicity in Bioware games start for me when they are like, 1 or 2 shades brighter than Traynor. Anything above that I consider it to be Tanned. Also are there any people resembling Asian or Middle-eastern people in Dragon Age? I'm not asking for Dragon Age to have one of every type of ethnicity in our world to be in Thedas, I'm just kinda curious.

I think she's black, I just don't think she really counts as a LI.

See, i didnt get this feeling at all.. To me, it felt forced. As if there were some politically correct checklist they went to be sure as to not offend, discriminate against, or leave out any possible combination of the gay community.. Only some of it felt natural.. Dorian, i thought, was well done.. I had my suspicions, but as OP stated, wasnt sure until much later.. He wasnt flaming, and it came off very natural, and like someone you might meet..  The rest of it however, just felt as i mentioned.. Be sure we have female leadership, in powerful positions, check... We have a gay man, check.. We have a gay woman, check.. Transexual, check.. Be sure to make note of it, and that its addressed accordingly, with, and without prompt, check.. Make sure theres is possibilities for all, and beside Dorian, they have no real preference.. My male, Qunari mage had no issue going at Cassandra who should not really be all too keen going for an apostate, and no one seemed to mind that they were going for a "Goatman", regardless their race/species..  Dorian, likewise, didnt seem to mind that he was Qunari either, despite centuries of war raging between the two races..

Im glad that everyone is represented, and everyone is happy, but some of it just felt forced, and phony...

PS: I never considered Isabella to be black...She had no features, and as a "Pirate", was obviously very tanned...

There are no cultures that specifically represent those in DA.  I've always thought that Mother Mallol looks vaguely "asian", but I guess that's also subjective.
