I only just started the game, and am curious to know how we can put assault rifles and other weapons on other classes(specifically sentinel). Does anyone know the details for how this works(how soon you can do it, costs, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

There's a story mission decently late in the game that you must do, and you get the advanced weapons training there. You can train in AR's, Sniper Rifles, or shotguns. If you already have training in one of those, you can instead get the heavy version of that weapon.

Essentially this means there's relatively zero reason to be a Soldier, as AR's are a big selling point for that class. To clarify the story mission is after you've picked up 8 of your ten party members.

Soldiers have unique abilities, are the only ones with access to all weapons, and are the only ones with access to the Light Machine Gun.

Yes, and besides they've got bullet time (Adrenaline Rush). You can take out several people with headshots before it ends. Would be better than the Infiltrator at sniping, if the latter didn't have all the other awesome stuff.

I think the reason to have the soldier is more the Ammunition augmentation the having any of the weapons.

After you get some of the second set of squadmates, Kelly will tell you that the Illusive Man wants to talk to you. Talking to him will send you on that mission. I know this is the spoiler forum and all, but I don't want to spoil more.

And the special abilities they get.  Bullet time (adrenaline rush) and concussive shot seem pretty good abilities.  Granted it seems very ordinary and plain compared to the other neat stuff the other classes get but I think it'll make for a good playthrough.

It is the one that takes you inside the Collector's ship (the first time)

Ammunition augmentation pales in comparison to some of the other skills. Vanguards in particular are monsters. Your "bullet time" leaves you where you are, the Vanguard version of that brings you right up to their face, blowing one of them completely off the map, even if they are behind cover or over considerable distances like across chasms. Then slowing time so you can deliver death to the rest of them. By the end of the game you can do this every 4-5 seconds. It's heaven. In addition Vanguards get the ammo augments that matter, Incinerate and Cyro. The other augments your squad gets, saving you the points. Or you can train for them as well. The only unique thing about a soldier is that you can use Adrenline Rush and the Light Machine gun, that's it. Up to you to decide if that's worth it.

Whatever your preferred weapon is all classes can get to it unless it is the Heavy Shotgun or Light Machine Gun. I can't speak to the Machine Gun yet but in the case of the Claymore, a regular shotty is almost as good, better in some situations, and the Collector Rifle is full auto.

Still not as cheap as Tech Armor with some upgrades. I can just walk up to a bunch of Krogan and Asari and melee them to death.

Anyways, you can find the advance research bonus as soon as you have a loyalty achievement.

They are talking about weapon advance research, not powers. I didn't mean to imply Soldiers are cheap or broken, they are infact the opposite. Weak.

The Claymore is plenty useful. It hits harder than most of the heavy weapons.
