I know this may be construed as Heresy by some, But I actually don't particularly like Varric that much, Heck I find him kind of annoying.
And I certainly don't find him funny
He's not the worst companion ever though
thats ok as of P3 none of my comps talk anyway lol.

A bit off topic, but who would be the worst in your book?
Mine would be Blackwall, without a second thought.

I don't like or dislike him, but I also do not feel as though he's being shoved down my throat more than any other character. There are a number of companions who have quite a bit of war table quests for you to do, and while none of them have loot that is specifically for them. . . well, that's because Varric is the only one who can only use ONE weapon. If we could give him other bows to use, we would have seen a lot less schematics for Bianca popping up everywhere. Understanding that, I wasn't really bothered by it all that much. If you don't like him, you can ignore pretty much 100% of his quests and he doesn't make a huge appearance, that I recall, except for in the beginning and when Hawke shows up. There's a cutscene after with Cassandra chasing him around the table and you can let her be a ****** at him, even, if you feel so inclined.
In short, he isn't made to be any more important than any of your other companions and I feel that he is very easily overshadowed by others like Blackwall, The Iron Bull, Cassandra, Solas, etc.

Varric didn't feel like a particular writer's pet to me, or like someone who was "forced" on me. That's absolutely Morrigan's role, and I despise her even more in this game than I did in Origins. Others will say it's Leliana, though at least she's there from the beginning instead of muscling in out of the blue and hamfistedly ruining the endgame plot for me. Varric, at least, can be dumped like a hot potato the moment you wake in Haven. You never have to bring him or listen to him, while interacting with the advisors and Morrigan is mandatory.
The fact that Bianca upgrades are sold in shops is definitely metagamey BS -- but then, so is the entire genre's rabid gear-obsession. I'd happily get rid of it all if it was up to me, but for many players it'd be "heresy" to make gear all but meaningless.
As someone who never had any interest in playing DA2, I actually liked Varric quite a bit more than I thought I would. He's comfortably up there with Solas and Dorian as my second-tier choice of companions, the first being Cassanda and Cole by a mile. If the Inquisition has a "morale officer" who tries to get along with everyone and keep spirits up and feet solidly on the ground, it's definitely Varric -- and that is reason enough for me to like and respect him, because I loathe few things as much as I loathe disruptive and selfish characters.

As far as Inquisition companions go Varric is actually probably my least favourite. I hated Blackwall but I liked his backstory and found it interesting so while I don't like him I find him more interesting so place him higher than Varric.
As far as Dragon Age as a whole. Companions I like less would be:
DA2 Anders, Isabela, Merrill, Wynne and Bethany (Only because I found her extremely boring).
Can't decide which of these would be my least favourite though.

I never got Varric. A male dwarf with no beard? Who isn't constantly drunk or semi-drunk? And isn't charging at everything with a weapon bigger than him?
No.

You got Varric. That's exactly what he is - the anti-stereotype.

I personally loved Varric in DA2 he was my favorite companion. However, I do feel like he is a lot less interesting in DA:I he feels like a shell of his former self.
I don't see how Bioware pushes him anymore than any other character though he has a logical reason for being the tie between DA2 and Inquisition.

Solas - 5 (1 early on, 1 from imprisoning mages)
Blackwall - 3 (1 templar questline only)
Cassandra - 3 ( 1 templar questline only)
Cole - 4
Dorian - 3
IQ - 5
IB - 4 (1 requires you to be a qunari PC)
Sera - 2 (wtf)
Varric - 5 ( THREE early on!)
Vivienne - 5
Where is viv's 5th amulet? The distribution of amulets makes no sense, did the devs know sera and warrior tanks would be overpowered as heck and decided to only give her 2 amulets of power to compensate? I was convinced for a while all characters had at least 4 amulets of power each but after may playthroughs I can not seem to find more than whats quoted here.

i personally don't understand why varric wasted a slot, he doesnt add much insight (As background lore) during banter, And being from merchand guild he would bettter fit as a advisor or trader, a middle man for the templars lyrium and spy network. it would make more sense, then oh since im already here i will help out.

Vivienne:
1 - Winter Palace - Looted from a chest in the empress' vault, on the upper level of the Grand Apartments, during Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts.
2 - Emerald Graves - Inside a locked room in Villa Maurel during A Corrupt General.
3 - Reward from the war table operation Truth or Dare: The Endgame.
4 - Reward from the war table operation Alliances: Reaching Ever Upward.5 - Found in a room in Villa Maurel that requires you to reassemble 3 key fragments during Safe Keeping quest
2 and 5 are exactly the same.
IB :
1 - Emprise du Lion - Looted from the high dragon, Hivernal.
2 - Reward from the war table operation Contact with the Valo-Kas Mercenaries (Qunari Inquisitor only).3 - Defeat Hivernal
4 - Defeat Crestwood Dragon
1 and 3 are the same. there is an additional amulet from track spies in nevara which makes 4 total.
I can not believe sera would for some reason only have 2 amulets. Has no one really found her third amulet? I hope it isnt something absurd like you have to be a female elf who rejects the chantry or something.

I get why he's different in Inquisition, because the weight of all the crap that's happened is finally getting to him, and it makes him less fun to have around in comparison but because I became invested in his character in DA2, it feels like character development and I genuinely feel sorry for him.
