I played Inquisition and enjoyed and decided to get the older dragon age games to see the early story.

I am enjoying Orgins but just what is wrong with the companions not wanting to help people?  Everytime I agree to help someone Morrigan, Sten and sometimes Alistair disapproves.  Am I not suppose to help people in this game?

Morrigan I get, because she's just a ****** in this game and thinks you're meddling, Sten thinks you're distracting yourself from the larger task at hand so he disapproves....not sure about Alistair though...he's usually very helpful so maybe it was that particular mission you accepted.

Oh and welcome to DAO. Hope you love it! It's really the bar for which the other two games were set for alot of people.

i have the same problem wih DAO.

In DAII and DAI  companions seems to be more adult, while in DAO the warden have to deal with a bunch of Teenagers.

Personalities. Some are aligned to your thinking and others aren't. That doesn't mean they're evil or good. It means they have conflicting views with yours. You can win them over and sometimes you can really ****** them off. Origins is a masterpiece like that.

ie: Morrigan is going to be a very hard person to win over if you're anti-magic and pro-Chantry. Alistair is the exact opposite. You define WHO YOU ARE and let the game naturally mold onto you. In Origins, you can take a really direct hand in Fereldan or you can allow favored companions to assume roles bigger than they imagined. Origins is not a game you simply playthrough once to get it all in. It can take another pass or even a few dozen to truly get it all in... and you'll have fun doing it. It's not a chore. The toolset is also there to mod the game. Take advantage of it.

Last bit of advice: DO NOT WIKI THE GAME. If it's your first playthrough, get a taste of what your choices will become without being steered. I did this and Maker... I learned a little more about myself. I then sculpted the story to my taste and guess what? all of my companions were there at the end with new hopes and adventures. Again, masterful storytelling and design.

The Gift DLC for Dragon Age Origin pretty much renders the entire companion system worthless, as any insults can be amended with limitless cheap gifts no matter how grievous. And that's not even counting the free gifts that grant an instant +50 Approval. You have to be careful with this as that can mess up some companion quests - especially so for Leliana.

And I agree with Cyan, play the game the first time without spoilers if possible. The story is much fresher and more interesting this way. Later on, of course you can plan your moves throughout.

Exactly. It was a nice fix for your Mabari hound though. Your hound offers a bonus, but it's not active until you lower his approval rating and raise it again.

Morrigan and Sten especially think you're wasting time that should be spent defeating the blight by helping random people. They are really the only companions that think that way though. Idk about Alistair though, usually he likes being helpful. He might disapprove if it seems especially pointless I guess.

If you want to do a helpful, good playthrough, I'd suggest running with Wynne, Leliana, and Alistair. Oghren and Zevran don't seem to care either way, but they won't really approve for helping people either. Sten and Morrigan are the worst if you want to do every side quest.

I agree with the feastday gifts kind of ruining the companion approval. Its best to let things play out through decisions first. It makes the game more rewarding imo.

I've played through the game many times, so now I use them to move things along quicker but it does kind of take That whole aspect out of the game, and honestly it's one of the best parts of the game

I am enjoying the game, the story so far is great.  The only companions I have so far are Morrigan, Alistair, Sten and the Marbari dog.  Have not got far enough to meet anyone else.  I can't wait till I run into Leliana, she is my favorite character in Inquisition and can't wait to meet her in Origins and have her join my party.

To be far with Alistair his approval dropped when I had to threaten the chantry lady in the village to get the key to release Sten.  The persuade option failed.  On my 2nd character I took some of the persusian perks and have been able to persuade people easier, havn't tried to release Sten yet though.

I started with a Elf mage and got to Redcliffe castle.  The spells are great so far, specced into the healing and lightning trees so far.

Last night I started a Dalish Elf rogue and am having a blast with her.  Just for kicks I decided to refuse every attempt of them to get me to go be a warden.  My Dalish Elf loves the forest and her clan and did not want to leave, wanted to see what happened and the *** Duncan invoked the treaties and forced me to come.  Since then my Elf has chosen to take the rude options and keep saying she was forced and it wasn't her choice.  I also kept trying to get Alistair to take over but he just wouldn't, kept saying it was my choice.  I just reached the first village before I stopped playing for the night.

I have a feeling I am going to love this whole game, so far it has been great.

Don't forget to turn down leliana's offer to join you the first time so she can ambush you later. Convo is funny.

You know Leliana's in Lothering?
Don't leave it too long to recruit her.

I'd second this.

I don't ususally turn her down( ), but it's definitely worth doing at least once.

Probably because him and Morrigan don't like each other. I mean did you see his face when he does the DR. :P

I meant did Bixillara know that.
If you go to Redcliffe without speaking to her in Lothering, she won't be in the game.

Nope did not know she was in Lothering.  Missed the tavern on my first character :(  Found her on my rogue character.  Thankfully I was not far into the game, remade my mage and got her.  Thank you :)

I am enjoying Orgins but just what is wrong with the companions not wanting to help people?  Everytime I agree to help someone Morrigan, Sten and sometimes Alistair disapproves.  Am I not suppose to help people in this game?

That's your first problem. For Morrigan and Sten, you picked the ruthlessly "pragmatic" companions who think you should focus only on stopping the Blight and shouldn't waste time assisting people they feel are too weak/cowardly to help themselves. Alistair normally also approves of helping people, so I don't know what decisions you made that earned disapproval.

In DAI,  companions joined the Inquisition specifically to help your organization help people in a world gone mad, so of course they approve of you helping others. DAO has a Blight that's rapidly spreading, and you need to stop it, which may or may not coincide with helping random people you encounter on the road. Since your companions are here to help you stop the Blight, they all have different opinions on how they feel you should go about it. Some feel you should help people as you stop the Blight, some think you should just focus on the Blight first and let people deal with their own problems as you go.

You've got your "team good" companions Alistair, Leliana and Wynne (who always want to help people), "team jerk" Morrigan, Sten and Shale (who feel helping others is a waste of time) and "team comic relief" Dog, Zevran, and Ogrehn, whose approval on helping others kind of varies between situations. (Or remains constant in the case of Dog.)

Hope that helped.

Right Cyan!

You took the words right out of my mouth.   In the years I’ve read the forums, no matter what opinion (about any character), there will ALWAYS be someone else with a counter opinion.   It is always interesting to me to sift thru their [so-called] “logic” as to WHY.

For example, some can’t differentiate the difference between good reasons to kill & bad reasons for killing – it’s all the SAME to them.  They seem to think if we all put flowers in our hair & hold up peace signs – then BAD things and BAD people will just go away.

They’re quick to say “wardens kill and Howe & Loghain kill, so what’s the difference?”   Anyone with more than sawdust between their ears knows that if the following THREE (3) individuals were killed by grandma (with a pitchfork) consider the consequences.   Do the 1st grade math:

Hitler – 6.6 million in genocide and 60 million dead in World War 2

Stalin – 20-30 million dead of his own people in death and concentration camps

Mao – 30-40 million of his own people starved to death & other atrocities

So it is pointless to argue with the Loghain lovers, Howe lovers, Illusive Man lovers.   If you drill down deeper, you begin to see their reasons WHY.   Do I really need to connect all the dots for you?  I think not.

In every game (especially Mass Effect), the game designers really need a CONTRAST in characters with various assorted heroes, despicable villains, fruits, & nuts.   Depending on your personal life’s background (that you’ve either succumbed to or overcome), you’re going to align yourself with one or two characters that are JUST LIKE YOU.

Unfortunately, that might give you a BLIND SIDE when you surround yourself with people telling you what you want to hear.     I recall a Star Trek episode where the Enterprise is blasted.   Everyone is knocked to the floor.

  • Worf:  Captain!   We cannot take another hit like that!
  • Troy-to-Piccard:  I guess we didn’t tell them what they wanted to hear.

And in the movie Dirty Dozen, the sergeant and major are shoulder-to-shoulder with arms folded; watching the convicts train in the obstacle course:

  • Major:  well sergeant, how do you think this will turn out?
  • Sergeant:  Everything will go just fine….sir!
  • Major:  don’t tell me what I want to hear.
  • Sergeant:  I think the first opportunity one of these scumbags gets, he will put a bullet in your head
  • Major:  thank you!

Unfortunately in business, the FORMER is the rule (tell the idiot management what they want to hear).   I for one, don’t want to be surrounded by a bunch of YES-men.   The first time I played the game I romanced Morrigan (and the last time).  Though IMO both Morrigan and Sten are jerks, they are not despicable back-stabbers as in the Machiavellian (rat-race) business world.

TRUST is the key.   Morrigan & Sten struggle with their problems as we all do.   Until you reach 40, you probably can’t relate to that.   The reason rabble rousers go to college campuses to recruit a “rent-a-mob” because that bunch has been programmed with opinions lacking substance they can’t defend.

I love Mass Effect and DAO because there is no stupid Judas betrayals in my crew.    Alternatively, I will NEVER buy a game sequel where I’m betrayed by my boss or comrades (Assassin’s Creed, Bio Shock, Dead Space etc).  To me, that is the "smoke & mirrors" (lacking creativity) that musicians do (who have no skill).

I love discovering and unfolding the characters in ALL my games.   Let’s not browbeat someone because they spent most of their early lives going thru garbage cans.  Been in their shoes?  Obviously when there’s no more character discover, I have my preferences.   My crew consists mainly of my sweetheart Leliana with Winne, and Alistair.   Yes, Alistair needs a spanking – but sorry he’s not as perfect as some of you on the forum.

WOW!   :o  They even COMPLIMENT each other instead of having a contest -- of who can outdo each other in insults.

Nothing's wrong with them, That's the beauty of BioWare in these story games of their. Your personality won't fit with some of the characters. The characters in the game may not like what choice you pick and will show their standing on it, some will approve, others will disapprove. Each character has their own personality. Morrigan really doens;t like helping the weak, or doing anything that has to do with the chantry, Allistar disapproves of blood magic and people who don't try to help others in need, Lilliana likes those who help the poor, those who have faith, and disapproves of people with no loyalty. ME personally, Sten was just annoying lol, "Why is a woman fighting? why do you keep asking these questions, Why are we just sitting here!" CALM down dude! lol we'll get their eventually. I never actually tried taking Zev on missions so I don't know him as well and Shale literally just sat in my camp all the time. Ogren I took once in a while cause him and Morrigan are just hilarious. I'm sure others have different views on these characters and that's why I love games like these, opinions vary person to person.

So true about Sten.  I just completed the mage tower quest where I had to go in the Fase and got the mages hep for the blight, went back to my camp to save to take a break and the first thing that comes up is Sten questioning my womanhood as woman don't fight lol.

I just got Wynne for my party so I am getting more people to choose from.  Currently using Alistair and Leliana in my group all the time and will prob use Wynne and Dog for the last spot.  Morrigan and Sten get on my nerves.
