I have it, so I'm thinking you don't need to?

 

I know the next question will be "how and where?" and I'm sorry, I'm not sure.  Cassandra is using it in my Mage playthrough, which I'd set aside for a bit to work on a rogue.  I was just admiring this model today, actually, loaded up my mage and was checking companions, and there's Avenger on Cassandra.

 

I will see if I can figure out where the honk I got it.

 

Edit: or, I could follow your link.  Yeah, I guess that means not every choice for that war table mission gives the sword, huh?  Sorry man.  I don't know why they'd hide the best art in the game behind slim chances, or unique item drops you'll be lucky to use for 2 levels before selling. =/
