You're talking about it being ironic that up until Germany because Germany, people thought France was hella boss. I'm saying. People don't actually think France is full of pomps. Not any educated ones, anyway.

Yes, I am aware that the cheese-eating surrender monkey thing is a bit of a marginal stereotype nowadays in America that arises occasionally when people crack jokes at the expense of France.

I sometimes get carried away with history.

Tbh, Briala at that point cares more about her own personal power then her fellow elves, they just happen to get some benefits from her power grab

Briala sided against Celene in TME precisely because she cared more about the elves than personal power (since that's what Celene promised her, but she also started to realize that Celene would go back on her promised reforms for the elves the moment it threatened her standing with the nobles). Briala's gratitude to the Inquisitor is about giving the elves a real future "for the first time in centuries".

I imagine some people will be so incensed they'll start multiple threads just to discuss it.

:o

Multiple threads? The horror! How ever will the devs, nay, the fanbase at large, endure such a demonstration of ire?

It is ironic because in the USA, it is a common stereotype for the French to be portrayed as cowardly cheese-eating surrender monkeys who cannot fight wars despite their long history as a strong military power that stretches all the way back to the time of Charlemagne.

This is further evidenced by the fact that most, if not all, of the military lexicon in Western European languages is derived from French.

I will note, its a Scotsman who calls them cheese eating surrender monkeys >.>

Also, Charlemagne wasn't French, he was a Frank

Likes and warnings will be thrown about in equal measure.

It's for the good of the elves. And if you don't support her, you're racist. (And self-hating, if you're an elf.)

Well... that really depends on your impression of her. Seriously, she can be seen as power-crazy b*tch with little grasp on reality - that's precisely the kind of person you DON'T want to see with power trying to help her (and your) oppressed people.

I did help her (reuniting with Celene) and I really believe her playing blackmailer-puppeteer with figurehead Gaspard is a terrible thing for the elves in the long run. That is, realistically looking at situation, I don't thing Bioware would dare to reference anywhere true (inevitable) results. Celene's Briala-inspired reforms won't be as daring and she's likely to go back on them, but I believe some of it will remain, making life of orlesian elves a little more bearable. With Gaspard it's a matter of time before it all just backfires terribly.

Killing some filthy elves is always nice.

Giving us a reason to do so sounds great.

Briala might have cared about the elves in Orlais at 1st but by the time the peace talks happen is obvious that she's been corrupted by her desire for power & is willing to have elves killed if they could threaten her position, you really think she wouldn't do the same to any elves who threaten her position as "power behind the throne"

Charlamagne stopped being German when he decided to be Roman. Like all logical people should.

Seemed eager enough to send one of the elves she oh so much cared about to her death because she knew about her adventures under the imperial bedsheets.

There's no concrete evidence that she's willing to have elves killed simply because it threatens her position. Briala even investigated the disappearance of the elven servants when she could have easily ignored it. Even the Epilogue where Briala is ruling Orlais addresses that elves are enjoying unprecedented rights.

And?

The Franks came to Gaul, propped up a kingdom, and spoke a Latin dialect containing Germanic influences that eventually became what is today French.

EDIT: In fact, no.  Most Germans back then spoke Latin as a second language and invaded lands filled with Latin-speaking peoples.  That further sped up the abandonment of the Germanic dialects spoken by the Franks, Goths, et cetera.

There's an elf who's been sent to her death because she knew about her and Celene.

And those elven servants were spies in the winter palace.

The Franks spoke a germanic language originally, when they ended up with former Gaul their language was phased out for a latin vulgate popular in the souther parts of Gaul where old Roman elites were still powerful.

"French" didn't develop until much later.

And most Germans did not speak Latin, the average Herr spoke his birth language and if he was in the Empire, maybe a few phrases in Latin at the most to understand orders

You mean the spy provided some speculation on her part because she ran into a harlequin, not indisputable fact.

When Charlamange was around, the actual Romans spoke Greek.

So, how is it she immediately shuts up when you tell her the elf is willing to testify after that display of smug "lol, can't touch me. lololol"?

Eh, I am too lazy to brush up on my medieval European history to provide a suitable response.

You win.

The Byzantines aren't Romans anymore than anyone else was. If they were they wouldn't have lost half their empire in a single generation. Who loses half of Europe that quickly?
