When I asked Vivienne about my companions during the latter parts of the game she would often comment "So Varric was spying on us all along. He is a better player of the game than I thought"
This makes no sense to me. I assumed it was a glitch and something would be revelead about Varric later that would explain the comment, but having completed the game, I still dont understand what she means about Varric spying on us. Is it something really obvious Im missing here?
I missed this entirely. Vivienne and my Inquisitor never saw eye to eye, and although he helped her out with some personal stuff out of respect, he didn't really talk with her anymore than that.
However, I don't really see much sense in Varric spying on the Inquisition. . .? Who would he be spying on them for? He has people reporting to him, it doesn't exactly seem to be the other way around. The only person he seems to run to is Hawke, which would then imply that Hawke (if they survived the Fade) has reason to spy on the Inquisition, and is probably going to do something for/against it, which implies there's even more stuff going on that we have no clue about.
Considering Leliana is a beastly spy master, Varric would have had to do a veerrrrry good job keeping things on the down low.

I think that the "spying" comment was more about Varric pretending to not know where Hawke was, when in reality he knew perfectly well where Hawke was and had apparently been in contact with them for some time?

Yep. Not that it's 'spying', it's more like keeping an eye on those who were\are deeply interested in locating his friend. He would've warned Hawke.

Viv tends to see everything and everyone in relation to the Game so she ascribes them motives and intentions that they might not have.
Leliana also completely missed the Solas thing... She's kinda a sucky spymaster...
