But seriously, how does anyone else know what accessories you're running with?

I generally just assume that everyone runs with HoK (if available; I really do feel for people who still haven't gotten at least one ring yet).  There are other effects that trigger from landing the killing blow besides just HoK though...I Was Never Here, for example.

Like other posters pointed out though I think that most will agree trying to avoid killing blows to let someone else get it just risks more harm than benefit.  If a foe gets off one final attack before dying due to the delay that will generally far outweigh any heal from the deathblow.

I don't have no HoK rings. So, I love to steal kills. If I'm not getting it, neither do you. If I could, I'd steal all of them.

These are crutches and should be banned from the store. Preferably, after I get one or two myself.

Then if you play archer atleast your playing the right class to accomplish that.

The best staff i have is heal on hit which is a lot better. Kills are always gonna be wonky in this game because a lot of people, especially PUGing, are attacking the same thing and coordination is at best tricky and more than likely non-existent.

Thread is just silly, especially for blaming any one class or one ability for kill "stealing" and therefore blocking heal on kill for players.

He's not so much blaming as asking questions.

Although the answer to the question is definitely, "They should not worry about it, because it isn't an issue."

First I'd like to congratulate you on writing the first official kill-stealing post in BSN (for DAMP) that wasn't intended as a joke.

The problem isn't the other players. Your problem is your attack speed. In other words, you aren't killing fast enough. If you're on a melee kit and are being "out-done" by ranged fighters then fall back when your health gets too low. You're more of a liability if you bleed out and make the enemies stronger. If your health is really low at the latter part of the Zones then fall back and protect your ranged fighters from melee damage. Attack the weaker enemies as a priority instead of the bigger targets (especially archers) it's what helps keeps up my healing.

People should have generally by now learned that kills doesnt matter at all. Making it an effective, quick run i.e. maximizing income, with the highest chance of success (extraction) is the only thing that should matter. If one guy gets all the kills, I don't care at all - I've been there, done that, done with it.

If you want kill streaks go play an FPS game instead.

If you are dying because you dont get those HoK's you should go away from the frontline (to avoid damage), find some safe targets and kill them. Peel aggro off at the backline. This is probably easiest on stage 5 but works on any stage really.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to know how much of an issue kill stealing is with archers.

The problem at hand:

An archer using long shot (resp. archers lance) which shoots enemies that are low on health and kills them, stealing

kills that could otherwise heal party members that have the "heal on kill" ability (through items or skill).

An archer can very well control the initial target of long shot, but not necessarily the targets after that, as

long shot (resp. the upgrade) hits mulitple targets.

So should an archer abstain from using long shot ? Always? Only in certain circumstances?

Or should they not care at all about that?

What are your experiences with archers that steal kills? How should they be dealt with? Any advice?

oh here it comes kill stealing in the form of heal kills

Exactly this.  It can be a bit of a shock to your playstyle when you go from carrying a bad group (and thus getting all the kills to have reliable HoK healing) to being in a group where experienced, well geared kits land the majority of the killing blows (and starve you of that HoK healing upon which you previously relied), but it is not a bad thing.  You just need to adapt your own playstyle to match.

Personally I'm fine with playing more of a support role when there are stronger sources of kills in the group.  Hell, as long as the run goes more smoothly that way I'll be the gopher that picks up all the gold for people if I have to.

Plus every player that makes it to the finish line gives extra XP to the group. So you're awarded more XP if the entire group finishes the operation than if you're the last guy or gal standing.

This is almost as if a reaver was complaining about keepers casting barrier on her because she does more damage when low on health....

Please read my OP.

It is NOT about experience. It is about "heal on kill".

If an archer kills enemies that have low health then other party members cannot get health back by "heal on kill".

It's really on you though to get your kills. I have many builds too that use Heal on Kill rings on "glass cannon" characters for survivability and it's just basically up to you manage your health bar. If you spit out burst damage (which is a great use of HoK) you should be getting heals from somewhere. I hate to say it but this sounds more like a playstyle/skill issue. What class are you struggling to get kills with? If you're trying to Heal on Kill as primary mitigation for a "Turret Mage playstyle" then it could be a gear / build issue.

It's definitely not "kill stealing" though.  So maybe you could fill a different primary team role in that particular team? Support Mage vs DPS mage for example.

While pugging as an archer I have heard the occasional "You stole my kill, bro". Cracks me up every time in a co-op game! Even funnier when I stop "kill helping" and they end up needed to be revived on the next pull.

But seriously, how does anyone else know what accessories you're running with?

Yeah I agree I shake my head too when I hear that. It's really an interesting example of how significant personal perspective is though. Video games largely are a power fantasy and part of the intangible "fun " is the visual feedback and interactivity in playing out that fantasy. So if something disrupts that fantasy (like killing an enemy another teammate was in the process of killing) it can elicit an emotional response. The person experiencing it might not even understand why it feels so unsatisfying, just that it does. Which is why you'll get "thanks for stealing my kills".

A lot of people (a surprising amount) will effectively try and play a co-op game like DAMP like it's a single player. Maybe that's reinforced for people coming from the single player where the game goes out of it's way through team AI to make the player feel like the MVP in combat. So, when that player enters DAMP they're conditioned to play with a very self-centered perspective.

Careful Sab. You came dangerously close to me hitting you with my "Amelia, is that you?" meme. Russ beat me to it.  :)

If someone is relying on HoK so much that they're willing to raise a stink about kill 'ownership', then they're playing wrong. To all those archers out there: keep shooting those Archer's Lances. That skill is great.

It's a coop-multiplayer game. Work together ;)  I'm sure most archers will look for other enemies to grant you the easy pickings if you ask them nicely.
