Meh...i found him to be an annoying bore tbh, im glad i didn't do his romance either seeing as he immediately dumps the Inquisitor once the romance gets finalised

exactly. That is why I believe this is just a fad because people did not expect it. People aren't interested in him because of how well he was written but rather how he was written. It was revealed that he has a MUCH more major plot to DAI and possibly DA as a whole than ANY other character thus far in the last 3 games. Only character would be Flemeth but of course we cant romance her and she cannot join our party.

This is why I say it is a fad and that he is the FOTM because once the DLC comes and his story arch is finished, then his popularity would go down because his story arch is complete. Solas does not have the lasting appeal in the same way that a Garrus or Wrex does. Those two were popular throughout all three game and plus more and neither of them were fad characters. Solas is just in the spotlight now due to a cliff hanger not because he was "well written". Personally I believe all characters were equally well written and had good backstories but because their plot isn't part of a cliff-hanger, they have not become fads.

Yes, she does.  I wouldn't trade what we got with Solas for a cliche happy ending, staring off into the sunset.  Solas' romance made me feel more than I've ever felt while playing a game - both good and bad.  Most of all, the romance made my Lavellan's story have a stronger connection with the main plot.  It's also tragic - a god falling in love with a mortal and something I didn't expect Bioware to do.

And I romance him every single time, even knowing how it ends :3

What? Staring off into the sunset? No... Arianne and Sera totally pushed that bed off the balcony, just for the hell of it.

Not possible. If many people like a character I don't like, it must just be a fad.

People always obsess their brains out over "romanceable" characters, that is hardly new. (And if some character manages to become popular despite not being "romanceable", watch the endless screaming how they "deserve" to be in the next game and "deserve" to be "romanceable" there.)

I rather like Solas, though I really wish it was possible to get right in his face sometimes when he's being a judgmental hypocrite or bigot. But, sadly, the game rarely allows us to do that with any character. NPCs tend to get the last word in. *shrug* Thankfully, unlike Morrigan -- his plot-critical equivalent from Origins -- he actually has plenty of non-******* moments instead of being entirely disruptive. He can be compassionate, supportive, thoughtful, and open his mind if he feels like it. Otherwise he wouldn't get along so well with Cole or Cassandra ... and since these two share my uncontested favourite NPC spot, that helps him get in my good books as well.

For what it's worth, I actually liked him more before the big reveal.

I absolutely disagree. Even if he hadn't been a romance, and even without the reveal at the end, he would still be my favorite character in DAI, up there with all my other Bioware favorites (Alistair, Morrigan, and yes, Garrus and Rex to name just a few). Brilliant, willing to think outside the box, compassionate but also a little bit dangerous. You may not like him, nor do you have to, but I really don't get how you can say he's not well written. Patrick Weekes (and David Gaider, who I understand contributed a lot to the character due to his importance to the main plot) did an amazing job, in my opinion.

Does it matter? You seem to think that your opinion is a fact for some unknown reason. I think you're trying to get a fight out of the female elves' fan, with this thread and your thread in the no spoilers about female elves looking like 13 year-old girls.

It is a fad because people's reasons for liking him reveal that. Most people say stuff like "His arch isn't finished" or something to that nature. Once his arch is done, told and complete, he will still be popular among Solas fans but I doubt the general support behind him now will continue. He is only popular now because whats next for him is a mystery and the fact that he could potentially have is own DLC or even serve as a major character in the next DA game.

I talked about him endlessly before the game came out and continue to do so because he lived up to my expectations. He's an interesting character and I enjoy the discussions. What of it?
Plus the fandom is lovely and doesn't ****** and whine like so many other sections of the BSN. Much like this thread.

...is Solas running for office?

One character being popular doesn't diminish the quality of the others. Nothing wrong with not liking him, OP.

Most of the topics I've seen about him are from people in this fans

Either way why does it matter?

Sounds a bit like the same way Morrigan was and is still popular among fans. And I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, OP. Are you saying that Solas hasn't done anything to deserve the kind of interest he's garnered? Because if so, I'd say you did a pretty poor job of paying attention to the game. Personally, I think he's kind of a jerk, more than a little haughty, I think that his only kind of protesting when starting a relationship with a female elf is selfish, but dammit it all to hell if I don't still enjoy him in my party and enjoy his romance.

And if you think it's just romance fans who've latched onto Solas as an interesting character, then you've also managed to miss all the lore buffs talking about him, what he means to the DA universe, what happens next, what happened before, what in the world happened that made him give the orb to Cory, who did what to whom post-credits, and all the rest that goes along with the elven and Thedosian history. He's an interesting character because his mere presence runs counter to what we thought we knew about Thedas.

So Bioware created a character with a compelling story arc and interesting writing, and the fact that this draws fans' attention is... bad? Sounds like they're doing their job to me...

I don't understand the opinion that he's only popular because we know he's going to get more content. How does that make him more likeable?

If a character I didn't like was going to get more content I'd be annoyed that content wasn't going to someone I DID like, not inclined to change my mind and randomly start liking him.

Anyway, I like Solas because of how complex and flawed he is. There's so many ways I think he's great, but there's also so many things he does/think that are wrong. But they always make sense and I can always see why he comes to those opinions. He's incredibly sympathetic because of that.

hes interesting and has commendable views. His reveal is what makes him awesome.

Before i knew about his true identity, i rarely had him on my party unless it was elven related. (temple of mythral for example)

He is just too boring. Humor always wins, so Dorian is just the best mage to have on the party in my opinion. Iron bull + varric + dorian :)

sera's quirkiness just feels too.... artificial to me.

Not sure why he needs to be flavour of the month to be liked. :o I kind of liked him, because I found him funny the rare times he cracked a joke. Some other characters are a bit more predictable, like Dorian (still awesome though) where you come to expect more of the same, because it's their thing.

I liked most companions, actually. I only really dislike Vivienne, and that is mostly because she had too little involvement for her personality to work for me. I just found it too over the top - if she appears in a possible DA4 I might be more interested. But the others, they were overall very nice.

Solas won me over completely. I loved his romance but I also had a play through where I opposed him a lot and still felt he was an interesting character. Sure he can be a bit of a know-it-all at times, but considering how old he is and his previous status as an ancient elven god, it's amazing he isn't moreso. I like his artistic nature with the murals and how he speaks in iambic pentameter at times too. His romance was tragic in a good way. It makes things interesting and leaves cliffhanger that makes you go over your previous interactions with him to try and piece together his motivations and character.

Heh, I'd like your post if I had any left. Pretty sure every single character in DA has fans somewhere though- it's practically a point of notoriety for the fandom at large. :D

True that every character has fans it's just a matter of time before you meet them xd
