It is a fad because people's reasons for liking him reveal that. Most people say stuff like "His arch isn't finished" or something to that nature. Once his arch is done, told and complete, he will still be popular among Solas fans but I doubt the general support behind him now will continue. He is only popular now because whats next for him is a mystery and the fact that he could potentially have is own DLC or even serve as a major character in the next DA game.

If he'll still be popular amongst his many fans when the arc ends then that means he's not a fad dude. By your comical logic, the majority of the characters are fads.

Solas is pretty much THE dangling plot thread they left us to speculate about. So people will stop talking about him either once they give us a new dangling plot thread, or resolve that plot thread.

I dont hate him, he was too polite and respectful for that. But yeah, he has his head up his ass to some degree.

Although when he picked up the broken fragments of the orb i did feel sorry for him. Mainly because he looked so pitiful. Was a nicely animated and acted moment.

Still, if he is to feature again in future, and morrigan is to play another role, i sincerely hope the warden is too. This pathetic "oh theyre still around, they are just completely goddamn useless now" excuse is ruined the game for me.

They are indeed dying with the way the Dalish are going about it, but their demise isn't inevitable.

Dr. Eggman, Flavor of the Month? Nah, I don't see it. He'll be popular no matter what. People love their eggs.

 

I like him but he does have some problematic tendencies. He basically tells you "You are a credit to your race". I shouldn't have to point out how that's a bad characteristic for Solas (bad as in as a person, not as in his writing).

Dorian and Cassandra are still almost always numbers one and two in popularity polls. It's just that Solas fans are very active and very vocal. Just like elf fans in general are.

Number of pages in their individual threads is not at all a reliable way to gauge popular opinion. A very small and vocal group could be making the vast majority of posts.

 

Here's one that was on Reddit only about a week ago. This one even includes Cullen. Solas is in third, but he's approximate seventy votes behind both Cassandra and Dorian. Cassandra and Dorian also have the least amount votes for least favorite in this poll.

exactly. That is why I believe this is just a fad because people did not expect it. People aren't interested in him because of how well he was written but rather how he was written. It was revealed that he has a MUCH more major plot to DAI and possibly DA as a whole than ANY other character thus far in the last 3 games. Only character would be Flemeth but of course we cant romance her and she cannot join our party.

 

This is why I say it is a fad and that he is the FOTM because once the DLC comes and his story arch is finished, then his popularity would go down because his story arch is complete. Solas does not have the lasting appeal in the same way that a Garrus or Wrex does. Those two were popular throughout all three game and plus more and neither of them were fad characters. Solas is just in the spotlight now due to a cliff hanger not because he was "well written". Personally I believe all characters were equally well written and had good backstories but because their plot isn't part of a cliff-hanger, they have not become fads.

I originally said that Cassandra and Dorian win polls asking about favorites. She asked for examples. I provided them.

 

It's not a value judgement on anyone liking or not liking a particular character. Popular isn't a synonym for better.

I'm really confused by this thread.  A lot of people like Solas because they think he's an interesting character, whether they enjoyed his romance or just liked him as a friend in the game.  I mean, you even get the option to PUNCH him if he dislikes you enough.  Popularity certainly isn't a synonym for better, but remember how few people were looking forward to Solas in game?  Now, after actually seeing how he is as a character, he's gained a lot of notoriety with fans who didn't expect to like him (me included).  He was honestly the last character I thought I'd like.  Now, I keep playing the game mostly because of him.  Weird how that works
