I do not know the age of most of you guys so if you are 11-16 then perhaps you may find that stuff attractive, but by looking at threads and people posting their female elfs, the vast majority of them look....adolescent. Again, if that is your thing that that is your own business. However, it just seems like people always go with the furthest left option under the complexion tab in CC which normally results in the most "youthful" looks. I like to dab further into the complexion options to create more "mature" looking women that are in their mid-30s at minimal. Hell, for my next character a female mage elf, I will give her a bit of an aging appearance to make her look like she is at least in her 40s.

So yeah, is western society that anti-aging/anti-older women that people are willing for their female characters to appear like they are in the 7th grade?

And like I said, if you are around that age 11-16 then I can see why. Hell, when I was 16 I still found some 13 y/o girls attractive. But when you're in your late teens, 20s, 30s, 40s and up and you still go for the "under age look". Don't you think something is a bit wrong?

Who cares?  It's a single player game.  People are free to create their characters however they see fit.  It's no one's business.

The only option for ageing that I could see is the complexion one, so if you miss that, then you end up with the default setting. When I mess with it, some of the complexions are quite messed up and not what I was looking for. I personally make all my chars old grumpy middle aged males to properly get in the RP mood.

Your top picture doesn't look 13 to me. Just another messed up stereotypical computer game elf. At least it isn't anime.

If thats your thing....

I personally prefer women who look like women and not someone who looks like they just graduated from drivers ed. Then again, I am 29 and I will be 30 years old this year. I understand that there are a lot of younger (13-18) gamers here who may find the adolescent type attractive.

I just wanted to understand from someone who is 20+ to explain why they prefer for their characters to look like they could be a middle school girl.

i like to make my female characters look young, but i don't think they look THAT young?  i also like to keep them makeup-free.  they'd probably look a bit older if i did give them makeup.  /shrug

it's all personal preference.  i could blame it on my asian heritage because the majority (not all cos i sure as hell don't fit >.>) look younger than their years by western standards.....but nah, it's just my personal preference.

What I find a bit wrong is looking at a picture and saying "that person is 12", especially with screencaps from within a game. I didn't come away with that impression from either of the screenshots you provided. The second one is strikingly similar to one of my ex girlfriends, and she was 30 when we met. Just because you came away with an impression doesn't mean anyone else is going to share it. If I were to venture a guess on the first one's age, I'd go mid 20s. Which is alarmingly young for me, considering she'd be in the neighborhood of 10 years younger than my daughter. But I wouldn't have guessed much younger than that.

They look adolescent because they have clear complexions?

I think a lot of the complexions are unflattering.  I'm not a big fan of freckles and I don't particularly like how, I don't know, splotchy? some of them are.  I don't think the ones I choose make my elves look particularly young though.

The first picture in the topic does look kind of young to me, but I suspect that has more to do with the big eyes and the perspective of the shot.

Exactly this, eye size is the cue and some people are influenced by an anime style of facial appearance.

Well not to spin my own thread off topic, but dealing with complexions is something that I have noticed going all the way back to Mass Effect 1. From all three Mass Effect titles, and all three DA titles, I have noticed that the created males all have varied looks. Soom look young, some look older, some look like D&G Models, and some look like grizzled veterans. Then with the females they are either super models or young looking. You see VERY few older female Shepards/Hawks/Inquisitors/Wardens and you see VERY few grizzled female Shepards/Hawks/Inquisitors/Wardens, despite the fact that the lore could totally be legit for such characters who have a "hardened" look.

Like I said, I think a lot of it has to do with out society views beauty in terms of women. With men, they can still be very sexy and be sex symbols in their 40s, 50s and even 60s. With women, that is normally reserved for the 20 somethings and 30 somethings. Yeah, society today at least does recognize the sexy nature of women in their 40s and up, but not as nearly at the same rate they do men. Also men of any age could have a "grizzled" look and still be sexy but let a female have that and they are too masculine. Just look at some of the reasons why people decided not to romance Cassandra.

With all that being said, I believe that is the reason why in terms of videogame RPGs, a majority of the women that players create have "youthful" appearances to them whereas the men have everything from youthful from all grey haired man with scars and wrinkles.

I romanced Cassandra because she's such a good character. Her model looks great too.

Fwiw, it's really hard to make Dalish of any sort look anything but impossibly young. For my male Dalish, I kind of embraced the whole thing and made him look like he was maybe 18--with ginger hair and freckles--but I've yet to see any Dalish look older than say, 30.

For my female Dalish, I actually gave her the full-face tattoo (I think it's the alternate Elgarnan one) and it's impossible to give anyone that tattoo and have them look traditionally gorgeous, but I think she looks pretty tough.

Point being: 1) the elves, more so than other characters are hard not to make look young, and
2) the ones you see people posting aren't necessarily representative of the elves people play as. People tend to post if they think their characters are gorgeous--if you saw my elves, neither one are traditionally young and gorgeous, but I don't post them, because people would be like "meh", so what's the point?

I guess I'm saying I don't think the problem is as widespread as one might think it is.

Maybe. Elfs male and female are naturally younger looking than all the other races. I mean, it is hard to find a 13 y/o looking female Qunari. However, people also do not explore the complexion slider much and usually go with the far left option which normally is the youngest looking option. This was true fro DA2, DAO and all three ME games. If people really tried, they could create a sexy looking 35+ y/o dalish female but people dont.

You would be surprised about how much you can do with the CC if you actually tried and was open minded enough to have a character who was of an older age. Like I said before, people are far more open minded when it comes to their male characters by making them young, old, or grizzled (old or young). With female characters, it is just young, young, or young.

Nothing wrong with players wanting their elves to look like over made up barby dolls with purple eyes and even purplier eye liner. Its not something I would enjoy playing as but then again I only play male PCs.

Would people bat an eye if others made their male player characters rugged and beardy as opposed to effeminate and youthful?

My imagined my ugly!Lavellan (in all her substandard lo-res glory) to be in her late twenties.... with some notable exceptions, DA 'verse elves as a rule seem to rather ageless, so her lack of wrinkles and unlined sklin weren't terribly bothersome to me. Had the option to give her some eye-bags/eye crinkles been available in chargen, she'd have them; that and adjustable freckles were the two things I most felt the lack of. (And if other players want to make their toons look like kiddies - or geezers - it doesn't affect or bother me. Single player and all that.)
