Jrpg syndrome
One of the reasons I absolutely DESPISE JRPG is that crap with female character that look like they're 10 years old with super short dresses acting cute and dudes on their late 20s just crazy about them
seriously, that freaks me the **** out and they should just leave my presence ASAP if they're into that stuff

Early on in this thread anime was brought up a few times. Do you think there is a link between jrpgs/anime and how players try to "recreate" that "look" in DAI? Again as a 29 yo I try to create women who look 30+ especially since the lore allows for the PC to be at least 40 yo.

Just curious OP, but which age would you assume this elf is?  I posted it in the character creation forum a while back, and intentionally making a adolescent character wasn't a thought that had ever crossed my mind even once before I opened this thread today.

Just saying the second girl on OP's post looks exactly like a co-worker of mine. She's 36 yo.

And attractive female who is highly intelligent speaks in front of 100 people about the concepts of applied physics and when that female is done with her presentation, she is walking through the hallways when she runs into a peer who's first compliment is, "Nice shoes" or "I just want to say how wonderful your hair looks" or something similar to that nature, totally ignorant of the fact of her intelligence, but because she is a female, that notion is suppressed and thus the only "important" quality is her looks.

---------------------------

I'm fairly certain her shoes or hair is noticed because those are things can be physically seen. Nobody knows how intelligent someone is or isn't until they speak to them.

I'm also not exactly sure why there's some level of mutual exclusivity with appearance and intelligence, as if smart people can't be pretty or can't be complimented on their appearance. Walking up to somebody who's intelligent and saying "hey, I like your pants" doesn't demean them in any capacity, nor does it downplay their intelligence in favor of their looks.

But please, continue with the left-field assumptions. I'm sure you'll make a valid point eventually.
I assumed she had just spoken in front of a 100 people about the concepts of applied physics so the audience COULD base their assumptions about the person on the speech rather than on what she's wearing.
Also if I had just held a lecture or something and the first comment I hear is "nice hair" it kinda makes me wonder whether I did good or not.

Considering that there's no context given on the person making the comment...

Were they in teh room when she gave the speech, or was she some random bystander?

Just assumed the person in question was in the room and heard the speech.
Why else would the poster include the bit about the earlier speech? Surely if he meant it as a factor that people can't see intelligence he could have used more appropriate example, maybe stating that the female in question had a merit in intelligence other than a social gathering that implies the other person was present.

Until the poster confirms what he meant with the story I guess there's no point in this conversation. After all I'm not even disagreeing with your claim that intelligence can't be seen, just understood the quoted part differently.

If you think someone implicitly calling a large portion of this board pedophiles based on literally nothing is aware of syntax, that's on you.

I think that it is partially a quirk of the CC for elves. You kinda have to work against the CC to make a female elf that doesn't look young, imo. Recently, I tried to do just that. Not sure if I succeeded or not. Take a look: http://i.imgur.com/u9xBMyl.png.

See I really like the look of your elf!  Yes, I do agree that the CC isn't too kind when trying to created "older" look elves, male and female. However, you just have to play around with the CC a bit and especially complexion. Thing is, a lot of the complexions for elves either make them look way too old for some people or even makes their elves lose their attractiveness, thus they opt out and just go for the more youthful look. Looking at your elf, I can definately tell that you did not go with the generic furthest to the left slider option for complexion. I can also see some age spots/wrinkled skin, mainly around the eyes and some rough skin on the cheek. Your elf looks unique in that you actually gave her some age which separates her from the majority of other female elves I have seen which have all of younger appearance.

Nice job though.

At this point the thread has given you the answer to your question, which is that there are as many reasons for making young looking elves are there are people who are making young looking elves.

We all have our own reasons as to why our elven women don't look like they're over 40. Some people do it for RP reasons, some people are going for attractiveness and find 18-25 to be the most attractive age grouping, some people just go with what the CC puts out by default and maybe does a few minor tweaks, some people might prefer Japanese style which uses younger looking characters, and some people will have reasons not mentioned.

Also keep in mind that even though there have been people who are 30 and over posting in this thread, there are still a lot of gamers that are in the 18-25 range and when creating a character they might go for one of a similar looking age.

I'm not really sure what else you want to be getting at in the thread. Are you that bothered by people not making 40+ year old looking elves?

It might have been said before, but I'd like to mention that it doesn't really matter how attractive I might find people in their 40's o 50's in real life if the game that I'm playing isn't able to handle recreating those age groups faithfully.  I don't think that the CC allows us to make older looking characters of sufficient quality, and that's coming from someone who is rather partial to mature looking men.

Finally, perhaps the biggest obstacle to me playing around in the CC to experiment is that I won't know if the character actually turned out well until a good while after I exit character creation.  I play through the prologue enough with characters that I know I'm going to keep without wanting to do it just to find out whether or not that hideous looking complexion I've never chosen before actually looks better in the light of day.

Still don't understand why other people care what people's PCs look like.

If someone wants to use boob armor? Whatever as long as the game's armor isn't mostly boob armor my damns given are at zero.

Someone wants to make a glamazon? So? That effects me...how exactly?

Ugly Shepard? Go ahead. I'm not looking at him.

The only time those complaints make sense to me is if the devs were making the CC options to only cater to a certain group. And that's...not really the case? (Save those abominations of eyebrows and that terrible hair. WTF devs).

I kind of feel like it's a case of the OP projecting an infatuation with 13 year old girls onto the player base as a whole. Even when there have been tons of replies from people who didn't really change the preset, were going for a cartoon look, made the character to look like themselves, etc...he still rails on with "I swear gaiz, I make my characters look 30+ I'm not like you, you are all pedophiles and I'm not, look how normal and non pedophiley I am!"

And one should be attracted to their character to play it?

Psh in this case I have serious problem because I'm not attracted to any of my characters at all.

Yeah man, those eyebrows are considerably worse than the hair. For female Inquisitors, there are basically two and two alone that I really care to use, and I'm glad it was two because I wouldn't have liked to have both the Inquisitor and femHawke use the same style lol. Otherwise my Inquisitor might as well just have the same eyebrows Chancellor Roderick is rockin'.

I'm just not sure why there's so many variations of caveman. Most people's eyebrows don't look like that. I mean even if you dismiss the super plucked stylized eyebrows (which I don't like either tbh). There's plenty of variation between pencil thin and furry caterpillars attempting to eat your face. Why we only get 2 or 3 decent brows astounds me.

For a person who does not like the pretext of this thread you seem to be very active in it along with a few others.

Yes, as you continue to point out, I do like to make my male and female characters in DA/Mass Effect to look as if they are 30+ years old. The older I get in real life the more I like my characters to reflect a similar image of myself. When I was 16 years old there would be no way in the world I would create someone who looks 30+.

Now as for me acting like I am superior because I create 30+ yo women, well I am sorry but that is your own perception, just like it may be my own perception that many older dudes purposely try to create younger looking women. At least with my perception/opinion I created a thread about it, asking as to why that is....to educate myself beyond my own narrow view. Yes, I have said it is a bit weird for a grown man to want their character to look under 18 because it is, but I never explicitly called anyone a pedophile. If I have, please go back and find the quote.

I just wanted to get that off my chest. I know you will disagree with this and I know you will point out deficiencies of my post. That is the purpose of an open forum, where varied opionions and expressions are laid out and debated. I for one do not care if people agree with me or not, as long as there is a sound and respectful discussion.

Thank you

I don't think it's that people want them to look like children, it's that they want them to look like Anime characters. The big, wide shockingly coloured eyes and spiky hair, small noses and mouths etc. It just so happens that most anime characters (especially the women) look like children.

Honestly though who cares? What people want their characters to look like is nobody's business but their own.

It's all a part of Bioware's war on nice eyebrows. Maybe they killed someone's father?
