So I have tested several necro builds but only recently tried spirit mark and I kinda like it. It does decent damage and you get a minion. Now the real question is who to target with spirit mark. ranged characters who can attack the most or strong melee characters that can help you in close combat or something else?

Spirit Mark is OP, yo.

FNG translation: Don't waste your points building into it. Pick other skills.

Gay Warden wrote up a Spirit Mark guide that might help you if you are interested in "optimizing" its use. At the very least it'll give you reasons why you shouldn't be using it. I'm rather hoping for a re-write on the skill itself.

Best way to use spirit mark is to level up to 20, prestige the necro, then spec again without spirit mark.

Cool story bro. I didn't realize you could level it up to 20 then reset it. I didn't have the patience and contacted BW to have my profile wiped so I could start from scratch.

Spirit Mark is the best skill in the game.  Its a great DOT and stacks with Walking Bomb.  Also the AI will be fixed in about 2-2.5 years whenever Bioware gets around to completing their game they charged people retail price for and the marked enemy will attack and follow.

Walking bomb - 200% DPS with explosion at the end

Spirit mark - 75% DPS. with looking at scenery at the end.

Sure is a puzzler.

I actually quite like Spirit Mark. Be sure to have Heal on Kill on your staff and Death Syphon in your passives. When you die your spirit mark dies with you, which revives you with a small percentage of health. I got 7% heal on kill which gives me 17 % health to try again.

You can give your staff heal on kill using Cottons in the Offense slots of staff blades and grips, if your staff doesn't have it.

I'm pretty sure the damage also only works every other second. In other words it sucks. Also 50 mana and single target? Gtfo.

It's not like walking bomb which you can detonate for an immediate aoe knockdown and virulent spread or use it for single target dps

Honestly the best part of the Necromancer is Ice armor and Death Siphon. The passive that spreads freeze is also pretty good.

Wear or craft weapon upgrade with Heal on Kill. Spirit Mark enemy, capture it, and leave it alive. If you die and leave ghost form, the Pet Minion will die, triggering Heal, and revive you.

Treat SM as a self-revive / guardian spirit. Extended life / self revive is extremely valuable on Perilous difficulty when enemies can potentially one shot kill you.

My problem with SM is not that it is bad, buit it is that I end up wanting to be a pokemon master, 'gotta catch'em all'. I want to capture the Despair Demons, the Pride Demons, the Revenants and Arcane Horrors, and especially the giants and druffalo so I can see them knock down & tear up enemies.

What people could be saying in an alternate BSN universe is, Spirit Mark is not as useful as it may sound, since the AI often bugs out and the minion ends up not moving. But it's still good as setting up a decoy for enemies that just joined the party, since it will distract them (especially archers that just turned around the corner)

Whether that's useful enough to map it to one of your 4 skills is up to you. Try, try and try again! Worst that can happen is having to level a character you obviously enjoy again, and even gaining bonus attritbutes for it ;]

Why the helpful and polite answer? Are you, like, some kind of noob?

so did some testing on perilous. it is 150% dmg for 15 seconds btw with the upgrade. it is most helpfull when you know more enemies are coming for you. ranged characters attack the fastest since melee characters need to be close so getting a archer who does 300-500 dmg is good. Especially helpfull in 5th room getting a big melee character like the brute who can knowdown enemies with 700-800 dmg.

And the heal after you die is helpfull.

It seems there are worlds of difference between BSN and the rest. :)

That is one of most popular skills amongst pug Necromancers.

And for good reason, apparently you can SP doors!?! Just imagine the potential for trolling. E.g. an Elementalist joins an ongoing game, you proceed to spirit mark the exit door, put a kick mark on him, get on the mic and tell the others to do the same. With a bit of luck they will think he caused the key glitch and proceed to kick him - bam! No more Elementalist

I think BW should make one character like Trollban(Vauban) from Warframe.Man,trolling never was such fun.

Trollban is love. Trollban is life.

I logged into Warframe on Christmas and stood in a Relay for about an hour, telling everyone that Santa Vauban wishes everyone a Merry Vortexmas...

Dressed like this:

Spoiler

Yes, that's a Candy Cane Scythe on my back. Trollban always wins.

You've never seen me play Vauban Pinball then... Nothing is more annoying than having the entire map coated in Bounces.

Now the real question is who to target with spirit mark. ranged characters who can attack the most or strong melee characters that can help you in close combat or something else?

Both are good choices, depending on the situation, and your team composition.  Melee is better at holding some aggro, but archers add more DPS.

The vanilla melee tend to just stand there more often than other enemy types, but can pull aggro if they are near any others.  If you don't have a legionnaire on your team (i.e. you need/want a tank), then consider prioritizing the big guys for Spirit Mark - Brutes, Behemoths, Pride Demons.  I've had Pride Demons plow through multiple groups / "pulls".  Also, the Stalkers and Shadows (assassins) can both add a lot of DPS and hold some aggro.

I disagree with all of those saying Spirit Mark is a bad ability in this thread.  I think you all might just have the wrong expectations for it.  In zones 1 - 4, you have to expect that one cast of SM will probably only be useful for one group of mobs (though some pets will occasionally aggro to the next group, or you can pull the next group to it).  Honestly, are there any spells/abilities that are effective across more than one group of mobs with a single cast?  Even barrier will generally expire between "pulls".

And SM is fantastic in zone 5 during the boss waves.

Also, an Archer using Long Shot can often pull the whole zone to you, and SM really shines in that situation as well.

One rotation for a big group of mobs (e.g. guarding the zone door):

  1. Walking Bomb something near the center of the group.
  2. Wait about a half-second (buying time for a little mana regen).
  3. Manually detonate WB for the knock-down explosion + spread the WB DoT [1].
  4. Wait another second or so (for mana regen for SM).  The WB knock-down buys you a second or so.
  5. Spirit Mark the original WB target.

By that point with a good team, everything will be dead, anyway.  If not, then you will have a DoT on most everything.  The WB chain reactions will start soon, and your SM pet can both add DPS and help manage aggro until everything else is in the group is dead.  With a high DPS team, you may not need any pauses, due to mana regain from Death Siphon.

For smaller pulls just rotate fewer abilities to manage cool-downs.

My current Necro build is Walking Bomb, Spirit Mark, Fade Cloak, Winters Grasp.  Honestly, as long as you have Walking Bomb and Fade Cloak, you have a decent Necro build.

For those that level to promote (not stay at level 20), Spirit Mark also synergizes well with Walking Bomb in that it's on the same ability tree, so that you have all of your abilities at an earlier level.  I used to run WB + Blizzard, but got tired of saving an ability slot until level 16 or so.

Spirit Mark is a wasted skill. Most of the time your battle zone is already cleared before your 'spirit' starts attacking. And they don't follow you into other areas. Too stupid! Again bad coded AI.
