Treat SM as a self-revive / guardian spirit. Extended life / self revive is extremely valuable on Perilous difficulty when enemies can potentially one shot kill you.
Been avoiding SM like the plague ever since my first promote, but after having recently seen a PuG necro repeatedly pick herself up with it, I'm a bit intrigued.
Do the downs still count towards your three strikes though?

No. HoK Self Revives bypass the three revive limit.
