Whether you're kept overly busy or not enough, I will say this:

Whenever a random Inquisition NPC or an advisor closed a conversation with:

"I'm sure you have many important things to take care of"

I felt guilty as hell, while simultaneously thinking:

"Actually, no, I most certainly do not. Listening to an anecdote from your childhood or a clumsy attempt to flirt with me is by far the most groundbreaking and foremost thing on my schedule right now. I'm am most genuinely sorry you are forced to be led by me."

Games have a typical completion percentage of like... 35-60% on average. DAI's could well be lower, but the average is already so crazy low in the industry anyway.

I think it's a shame that people get burnt out and leave the game unfinished at like 60 or 80 hours, when the game can be completed in 40.

My first DAI playthrough was 120 hours.

My second however; story, few side fetching and companion quests [not the fetchy ones]; almost 20 hours. That's even less than the time I spent finishing DA2, least DA2 Playthrough was 23 hours.

If we compare both playthroughs, I spent 100 extra hours on nothing? I didn't even felt rewarded for all the exploration and trying to be a completion-ist. Plus I enjoyed my second playthrough more than the first because I was actually connected to the story. I thank cheat engine for this [used for power -avoiding fetching and banter only].

Not bringing DA:O to the matter though, at least 50 hours happily spent on each of my 6 wardens.

I think what a lot of players are annoyed with is not just that your the Inquisitor and you lead a powerful and vast army is that these fetch quests don't feel like they add anything to your story. now if they where investigations that gave you more information on Cory or the other enemies or even gather X amount of Y to make something that add to your army or power base. the side quests need to feel heroic and add an effect or real improvement to your Inquisition. I would have loved to have spent hours gathering stuff not just for crafting armor but for crafting magical artifacts or adding improvements to my army. Side quest just felt lack luster and a bit weak almost like they where a last minuet addition to the game to try and pad out the hours. as a lot of people have said yes you can skip them but the game punishes you if you skip to much. if the player just dose the main quests all of your companions will say how your a horrible person despite using good dialogue choices. it should not be a good idea to just skip a large part of the game as the side quests should feel not just rewarding but enjoyable not like chores.

Farmer: Could you help me? My cow got out and ran away. Could you get it back for me?

You: Do you know who I am? I am the Inquisitor. I head the Inquisition, one of the most powerful organizations in Thedas.

Farmer: Oh well, la dee da. Mr. I'm the Head of an Organization I Made up on the Spot. Inquisition is it? And what pray tell are you inquisicating in my fields.

You: It's not made up! We fight demons!

Farmer: Oh well, demons is it? Why you called Inquisition and not  Demon Fighters hmmm? Inquisitions 'bout askin' questions. right? There any demons in my field you gonna inquiserate?

You: Not at this moment, no.

Farmer:Good! You got time to get Ole' Bessy for me. Smart lad like you won't have any trouble, smart enough to form his own little gang of  ummm the Inkwanzatition was it?

Solas: In the fade I've often observed the spirits of cows frolicking...

You: Solas, not now. I am so close to unleashing the inquisition of my foot in the rift of your butt.

That farmer has a point.

It's not like the fetch quests are the main plot. They can be ignored if you think the Inquisitor shouldn't be doing them.

You can also ignore the personal quests for your companions, because y'know, they are working for you and you don't need to be friends with them.

You can also ignore the shards, the dragons, and the hidden dungeons.

You can skip the specializations.

You can just do the main quest and nothing else, if all else is unimportant to the Inquisitor.

Although, I do agree that the amount of random quests is a little disheartening, since I would have liked more meatier quests than just a bunch of running around and gather stuff quests, and if they just spent more time on one quest rather than 10 of those tiny gather quests, I think I would be more satisfied. That is just my opinion, though, others may be perfectly content with it all.

Just note, you do not have to be a completionist. You do not have to do everything in the game.

The only thing you have to do is the main story quests, and I only say that because this is no open sandbox game and would be pointless to play if one ignores the main quest line.

So in order to properly avoid the boring, short, uninspiring content is to just ignore it?  Great logic.

BioWare did a lot well with DAI, but those fetch quests weren't among the positives in the game.  Instead of having 100 terrible fetch quests, why not narrow that number of quests down but actually flesh out the ones that are there?

Yes, I do have better things to do but....

My companions stand around in a fight and do nothing.  And worse, sometimes they actually do something, like fade step from a distant, safe position into the middle of two rage demons.  Nice move Dorian.  What is it now?  You're on fire?  Too bad you just wasted that fade step.  No, you may not have a healing potion.  Just stand there burning and think about what you did.

Bull are you and your crew drunk again?  It's the middle of the day?  And stop bugging the woman baking the rolls.  She's busy doing her job.

I've walked through Skyhold waiting forever for the repairs to be completed only to find out that my workers are falling to their death off of the scaffolding.

I've waited patiently for one of my two smiths to craft something without me having to do it for them.  It took me 100 hours to find that tier 3 armor schematic.  Do something with it!  Well, maybe it's best they don't.

And you over there!  Are you just gonna stand there until I find twelve more mosaics.  Get moving and go find that glitched one in the Hinterlands and I'll read it to you!

My advisors can take several hours to complete a war table mission, and then hand me a brooch.  What am I gonna do with that?  You're my spymaster.  Have one of your mooks find something valuable or I'll pin that brooch to your nug.   That'll harden ya.

So after all of this there's no way I'm gonna trust these buffoons to deliver those rings, or pick my weeds, rocks and sticks.  I'll do it myself thank you very much.

I agree. It is funny. The side quest are optional. The go anywhere and do anything is exactly what i like about this game.

But you don't have to do them. I purchased the guide and it tells you what each quest is about. You have the freedom to choose. There are many side quest that fit the story well.

@ghostbuster101:  Sorry, I'm being sarcastic... all modern RPGs are giant fetch quests.  It's just how disguised those fetch quests are that makes the difference.  DA:I isn't some sort of unique case of being more or less fetch quest than any other cRPG I've played)

Indeed, i'm still waiting on an rpg where you don't get told what to do constantly and can just sit on a couch watching tv while the world burns.  :D
