Blood magic might not be inherently evil (I often argued it was not in Merrill debates, back in the day) but very, very few use it responsibly.

I. Blood magic is often resorted to out of desperation, and in a culture where the lust for power is so overwhelming that means it'll be resorted to fairly often by those who are actually less skilled at magic.

II. Blood magic does make someone more vulnerable to demons. All well and good if you're skilled at dealing with them, but see number I.

Read Codex Entry: Responsible Blood Magic.

Blood magic is rarely worth it, and is only used by the weak, foolish, or desperate. When it is needed and worth it... those are extreme examples.

Anyway, Tevinter was a glorious nation, a beacon of light after the Transfiguration. It can be great again; just need to humble the Altus houses.

Magisters are foolish and evil when they place themselves above the Imperium.

I agree. But it's danger doesn't mean it shouldn't be studied. Blood magic is responsible for the extinction of the griffons. It'd be nice if people were less superstitious and actually took notes on how not to do that. It could be used for benevolent purposes. It goes back to the atom bomb/atomic energy discussion.

Even Fereldan's Circle studied blood magic.

One should know about blood magic, even if just to counter it, but to practice it is another story.

Tevinter needs to become a meritocracy again. Other than the whole "Breach a whole into Heaven and become a God" thing Corypheus had the right idea. By his admission Calpernia was hella powerful, but she went by unnoticed because she didn't have the right last name or social standing. If that's what Corypheus wanted to change then I agree with him. It goes without saying that his methods were ridiculous.

You people keep doing this sh*t. Corypheus was actually the second Magister that tried to control the world through the Fade. This Age.

You could read this as a critique for the villains in the comics and in DAI being too similar.

Aye, but you're forgetting the best part about Tevinter in contrast (besides Dorian, of course).

Well, they didn't study it officially, they just had the books on the shelf... and then had the gall to be surprised when someone actually read them?

In retrospect, it does make the entire mess with Jowan and Uldred's posse their fault, since if both Irving and Greagoir had been smart, they'd have locked the books up with Eleni Zinovia's statue down in the "Basement of Cool but Forbidden Things"...?

I don't think so. The should have restricted it to Senior Enchanters without a history of misbehavior.

Yeah, but even the anti-blood magic and completely sane Wynne fails that criteria, since she broke the rules by knocking boots with a Templar.

Same with her son, Rhys, who was level-headed and completely sane as far as mages go, but decided to harbour Cole in secret, despite knowing that he was murdering people, as well as hooking up with a Templar himself.

And Anders was a nice guy who just wanted to be free of the Circle... and then he decided to allow a Spirit of Justice to hitch a ride in his meatsuit, only to end up an abomination who proceeded to start a war because he'd watched the ending of Braveheart too many times?

Seems that the sane ones are the ones who screw up the most?

Yeah, I just don't think fear of magic is beneficial to anyone. Caution of magic should be the rule. Otherwise you'll never learn what's kosher and what isn't. I'm pretty sure blood magic could be an awesome 'healing' school if proper research and experimentation were done.

Good lord, let's hope this painting of Drakon is an anachronistic portrayal by a modern Orlesian artist. If not , it seems Orlais' vomit fetish goes further back in history than we can even imagine...

If blood magic also involves manipulating life-force as Dorian comments, then it would be interesting to have a "healer" in a future game who'd be able to heal themselves and allies by siphoning life from enemies? It'd have to be a focus ability though with a long cooldown and some kind of penalty, so you can't spam it constantly to make all fights a doddle?

Or just as an NPC in a quest where we're called to kill a blood mage, who we find is actually just draining the life from the very worst criminals in order to heal the sick... leaving us with the moral dilemma of whether we allow him to continue, or kill him for being a maleficar?

It would work exactly like the life drain spell from DAO. I also wondered why there was no such spell in blood mage spec. If you can draw life from your buddies surely you could draw some from your enemies and direct it to whom ever you wish?

Still one of the most influential and powerful men in the history of Thedas.

Good point but the tilted and weighted base of the jack boot works fairly well.
