Cassandra's approval in "Champions of the Just" is rather inconsistent with her words, don't you think?

Throughout the quest, particularly after corruption among the ranks is revealed, Cassandra voices both anger and horror at what the Templar Order at Therinfall have been reduced to recognizing that they are out of control. Around the time you meet up with Ser Barris to help hold the line, Cassandra says that the Templar Order needs to be kept in check.

Yet, choosing to conscript the Templars earns great disapproval from her. Odd. I thought her dialogues in the quest indicated that she wanted the Templars to be conscripted. Heck, even Vivienne who despite being more conservative than Cassandra merely gains slight disapproval for conscripting the Templars.

In fact, Cassandra's reasoning for why the mages in Redcliffe should be conscripted seems odd considering the fact that Fiona held the responsibility for choosing to ally with the Venatori. Not to mention, the rebel mages attacking you outside of Redcliffe village were not affiliated with Fiona's mages who were seeking refuge from the Templars.

Yes. It's probably another umpteenth bug Bioware needs to fix.   That, along with her approval  discrepancy with the Well thing.

I kind of felt like Cassandra's approval was inconsistent throughout the game. She, for me, was one of the more difficult companions to please in dialogue options alone. I still am not 100% sure what she stands for.

Iron Bull was the only one more difficult. I just don't get the Qun I guess :(.

Get used to it. Cassie is a disapproval monster. Just when you thought you had her figured out she disapproves about something she earlier said she approved of...it is okay no one knows what's going on with that woman.

Totally agree with OP. It sounded like Cass had a lot of issues with the Templar Order and felt they had a lot of blame during that quest so it sounds like conscription would be something she favored. But nope. And even strange is that even though she greatly disapproves, you still get points favoring her for Divine (just not as much as an alliance).

And if you ally with the Templars, your next conversation with her at camp makes it sound like she is annoyed at your choice to ally with them even though she greatly approved when you did it (though she admits that you did what you had to do and gives you props eventually)

Maybe it is a part of her character?

She still wants the Templars around as an Order, and approves of that, but still wants to emphasize the problems with them so people don't forget.

She doesn't want the Templars disbanded, but is willing to move on because the decision is made.

So... she greatly approves of keeping the Order around, but greatly disapproves the Orders current actions, but the Orders current actions are not the Inquisitor's fault, so the approval/disapproval only comes from the former opinion rather than the latter. When she speaks after the decision is made, she is speaking of the recent actions of the Order, and allying is kind of side stepping it a bit while conscripting is a kind of punishment for the actions...

Maybe? I don't know, that's just my reasoning.

I could be wrong but I recall some comment she made where she said something along the lines of the "Order is broken. We don't need the Order, we just need the Templars themselves". It sounds like she would favor to have the men as part of the Inquisition instead of rebuilding the Order.

It's interesting that you noticed this (spoilers below).

There's another instance of this happening at the Well of Sorrows regarding Cassandra's approval of who drinks from the well. Cassandra suggests that if someone has to drink from it, Morrigan is the best choice. She is totally clear on this, yet she "disapproves" when you agree with this option. It's pretty confusing.

It's possible that some of these are bugs, but it might also be that Cassandra is happy with neither option and just disapproves less in some cases than others. :P There are some times in life when you can't make everyone happy, so it seems silly to me that your companions' approval would work in the exact opposite way.

She disapproves because she wanted you to think for yourself. Cass doesn't like a sheeple.

Just go by her character ideal.

Cassandra want to fix the mistake while preserve the present chantry core. Disband Templar mean you just destroy a militant part of Chantry.

I doubt she would've like it.

About the well, I don't know why it matter to her...

With the Well she doesn't want anything to do with it, so no matter who drinks she disapproves.

You have a point there Darkly Tranquil.

She has said that she is quick to taking action before thinking things through. Maybe she is too quick to saying what is on her mind sometimes, but will come to a decision after the fact. So, right after seeing the Templars in CotJ, she is in a foul mood over it and expresses her displeasure, but then thinks about it and decides that disbanding the Templars was not a good idea, but they can't have the approval/disapproval happen while the Inquisitor is running around Skyhold.

Would be interesting, having the Inquisitor buy something in Redcliffe and get Approval, then walking away from Redcliffe one gets disapproval, then returning to Skyhold gets disapproval, and then when is just standing next to the armor crafting station you get a Greatly Approves, then immediately get slightly disapproves.

I think it depends on if you 'allie' or 'conscript' them, so if they are 'seperate' from the Inquisition she disapproves and when you 'disband' the Templar Order and take them all into the Inquisition she approves. Same goes for the mages i guess.

What is strange to me is she disapproves of me making the mages my allies and not conscripted. But then when I talk to her after she says she doesn't approve but she understands my decision. Then whats the problem? lol

That I can understand. She doesn't like your decision. But she understands your reasoning and will accept it. I have no problem with that.

The Templar thing is more confusing.

I never had trouble with any companion's approval, even Vivienne when allying the mages.

But that one particular situation here had me raise a brow as well.

I adore Sandy, and almost always have her in my party as I feel like she's 'got my back'.  She's driven, she's got integrity and she's aware of her faults - it's a very appealing combination.  She might not approve of your decisions but she approves that you can make them and stick by them and so that softens the blow a bit for me.  I haven't played a mean Inquisitor yet and I have seen spoiler alert (sorry don't know how to add the spoiler icon) a youtube vid of a drunk Sandy, I'm not sure I could play an Inquisitor that would drive her to that, that's how highly I regard her character.  Now Leliana, she pushes you to side with the mages and then rants and raves at you when you 'save' her in Hushed Whispers (yes I get that she's been tortured), this is the character that confused me the most because I expected she would treat me very differently afterwards - especially as I was a mage.  Nope, business as usual.  So, Cassandra's reaction, to me, was more consistent overall.

PS - would somebody please tell me how to add the spoiler icon - thanks  :)
