According to some people I should be a puppy kicking child murderer, innocent butchering rapist because of what I do in games.
I also want to remind you of your terrible habit of promoting consensual sex between spoiled wizards and ox-men.

It's obvious that situation reminds him of his own guilt. You take him around with Bull and keep him in the Qun and say that with a straight face.

Oh how could I forget. I promote domestic abuse too!
(Actually I am a fan of highly dysfunctional and unhealthy as hell relationships in my fiction. But apparently liking something in fiction means I can't acknowledge it as being abusive in real life. Not that said ship is abusive (it's not) but I actually don't mind fictional abusive relationships.)
I should just throw myself on Andraste's pyre shouldn't I?
It's obvious that situation reminds him of his own guilt.
You didn't hurt yourself hitting all those smileys, I hope.
Nah. I'm not talking about the first line. I'm talking about how he talks about the wardens following the "that's odd." line. With his reaction to the sometimes sacrifices are necessary.
(Which is actually hilarious considering how he bleats in prison about the costs of war. So he's either dumb as a sack of bricks or hypocritical.)

You do realize we can just type shortcuts for the smilies right? No need to hit anything but keys :3

Nobody deserves to be burned alive.

I'd die from the smoke inhalation before the fires most likely anyway.

Looks who's being a murderer now ![]()
This thread got really dark for some reason.

Why's that a bad thing? Personally, I can't wait until someone talks about baby eating and human sacrifice.
Again, it's not just modern laws that condemn murder. This goes back as far as civilization does itself. Murder is wrong, no matter your class, no matter your age, no matter the time. I'm not sure why that isn't common knowledge. And the punishment was always the same. In fact, the first laws punished nobility more than commoners.
Who said it wasn't common knowledge? <.< >.>
I and others were responding to your "Dear lord, I'm glad you people don't write the laws we all have to follow." Which made it sound very much like you were referring strictly to modern laws.
If you want to get into the history of civilization, laws and punishments, that is a completely different topic.
Looks who's being a murderer now
I do it with love
I'd even put flowers on your grave promise!
And I'd visit with a kitten.
A tabby probably.

Why talk when it can be done in song?
The topic is the career of a murderer and deserter and you're not sure how it got dark?
Are you going to tell me? Don't leave me in suspense.
He's definitely not a hero. He was hypocritical, exploitative re: using the treaties when he had not even been initiated as a Grey Warden, and Maker knows his moralizing was the cherry on top. I don't think he should be written off entirely and I do find his epiphany later on - due to the Inquisitor's influence - genuine, but the dude led a company of soldiers that murdered innocent folk and betrayed his country. Those were crimes he still had to answer for - not to mention being a fake - so I didn't pardon him. I did release him to the Grey Wardens for judgment though.
I also think it's important to note a difference between Zevran and Sten in comparison to Blackwall; they were honest about what they did - Sten was even willing to accept his imprisonment - and didn't hide behind another person. Not to mention the Antivan Crows are a big part of that nation's culture, so I don't think them being used as comparisons to Blackwall would be accurate.
But I'm not going to demonize him and applaud Bioware for making him more than a stock archetype. He can keep that icky beard though.
Making a critical analysis of Rainier's situation per se and also as a part of a context does not mean find justifications.
Anyone is free to dislike a character, as long as they do it in the right place (!) and as long as they bring solid argument. His crime is small matter compared to what other characters did, and this is a matter of fact, and his reasons are no better than Zevran's or Bull's.
If someone say that they dislike him for being a self-righteous prig I'm ok, I can see their point, I even agree, this just makes me like him even more. You find him boring? Ok, your loss, I don't care.
What pisses me off if when the legitimate dislike for a character is hidden behind moralistic speeches about justice, or when people start writing nonsense like 'rapist' or 'puppy killer'. This is simply ridiculous and I wouldn't even have cared to reply if people didn't keep coming in the wrong thread to throw these gems of wisdom at us.
On tumblr I had a fruitful exchange of words with a girl who asked if she's a terrible person for not saving Blackwall, I replied, we talked about it and in the end she said she would start considering my point of view and started following me. I started following her. This happens when people are open to other people's point of view. Other times people made me change idea just showing their point of view to me, I saw wisdom where I lacked it and changed my mind. It's called mutual enrichment, it's wonderful, try it.
He can keep that icky beard though.
HERESY!! UNBEARDBELIEVER!! SHUUUUN SHUUUUUN!!
(actually he's also willing to accept his imprisonment/death, you just have to leave him in Val Royeaux.)
That beard is icky though.
He could've at least kept it nicely trimmed. ![]()
Told you people liked the beard. I'm waiting for your apology.

I'm not to blame for people liking unkempt beards.
Right. But that doesn't mean that you have to murder the murderer. There are other ways to make the murderer atone for his sin. And as other people have pointed out, the powerful have always decided the difference between murder and a justified killing. That's why we usually don't persecute soldiers for following orders.
That's right. No one stopped to think about the nobleman's (complete lack of) morality when ordering a captain to commit such a dishonoring act as assassination.
If a lieutenant or a general were to receive such an order in real life, they'd immediately know this is an undignified and degrading request, one associated with mercenaries, assassins and other less prestigious professions. Therefore, it's something that can forever besmirch their reputation if uncovered by his colleagues and superior officers.
However, because it was a politician that asks Tom to kill someone, and a powerful one, he cannot refuse, even knowing his honour is going to be forever stained and he'll have to carry the secret of what he did to the grave.
The truth is Tom Rainier never had any real choice. The whole family dying was unfortunate. He never wanted this. His men carried the order as the nobleman passed it to Rainier - leave no witnesses alive - and as a result, innocents died.
Tom knew very well no one would believe him if he accused the nobleman of coercing him to commit murder. Besides, his employer could easily corrupt the judge or any other authority involved in a trial to condemn Rainier.
(Doesn't that happen in real life all the time, especially in under developed countries, where big companies routinely win lawsuits by covertly "donating" hundreds of thousands to already well-paid judges?)
That's the reality of Orlais: a back-stabbing country where the small people pay for the mistakes of the big ones. And by running away, he did the only thing a man with no alternative could do: seek penitence and evade being hanged by an unfair system.
HERESY!! UNBEARDBELIEVER!! SHUUUUN SHUUUUUN!!
(actually he's also willing to accept his imprisonment/death, you just have to leave him in Val Royeaux.)
I know. I left him in there the first time I played through, and brought him to Skyhold the second time. I wanted to bust him out Red Jenny style though in my Rogue playthrough.
