DA:I is a great game and I love getting lost in Thedas and the characters that inhabit it. I've been a big fan of Bioware since I first played Baldur's Gate 1 upon its release. It was great seeing the progression over the years that resulted in DA:I.

However, since playing DA:I, I couldn't help but crave a nostalgic play through of their previous games like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I just started a new play through with a Fighter/Mage in the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition.

Anyone else going back to older Bioware classics to relive "the beginning"?

I actually replayed the BG1 Extended Edition shortly before DAI came out. Planning to keep going with BG2 now that it's been patched to 1.3. Playing as a Dwarven Defender. Never actually rolled a pure Fighter before, despite having played the saga far too many times. But, hey, dwarves!

I was surprised to find how much the exploration aspect of Inquisition reminded me of BG1.

I recently bought the enhanced editions for my iPad. I finished bg1 on a road trip and I'm currently running through bg2. Bg1 for some reason is my favorite I know bg2 is better but I have always had a hard time finishing it solo. I've gotten really far in coop with some of my friends in the past but never finished it.

I also bought the iPad versions of iwd and kotor. I'm not a Star Wars fan so I only got about 30 percent into kotor never played it before the iPad version. Iwd I have never been able to finish for some reason I just don't get into the story it doesn't grab me.

I have not played BG for some time, but I have both the EE and the original edition (both from gog.com)

It's a good game, but I have played it through 10 times already.. not even exaggerating.

(well, that's 10 playthroughs spread over 15 years, so I guess it's not that amazing really ahum)

Yeah i went back to play BG2 and now i am on Neverwinter Nights, i like the 3,5 modified ruleset alot better than 2. But i am not a huge fan of Faerun, even though i do enjoy Bioware's stories in that setting. Thedas is much more appealing to me.

I played both a loooong time ago and look forward to going through it again! I tend to like Faerun better. For whatever reason, I also like the characters in the BG series a little more, but that could also be the nostalgia talking. Neverwinter Nights was fantastic. Didn't play the second one.I finished Kotor when it came out back in 2005ish. Never played the second one. The DA series is great. Loved Origins and I'm liking DA:I immensely. Never played the second one. I must have some kind of condition....

I played though a lot of the old games recently as part of my "go back and play all the RPG classics I missed because I grew up on FPS" thing, and it included BG.

I'm currently working my way through Jade Empire. I'm thinking Planescape after that.

Yeah you're smart. Not playing sequels seems to be the way to go now days.

The best thing about the enhanced editions is not having to constantly swap cd's. Second best is playing on a tablet it's so comfy.

I also like what they did for BG1 in terms of classes and specializations as well as new armor and weapon additions.  Essentially, you can pick classes that were only available in BG2 back in the day. I can finally dual wield long swords while slinging spells!

I'm doing the same thing. Its difficult with limited time available to nerd out. I'd like to play all of the classics and get back to DA:I. It will be interesting to play through all of the games and see how Bioware cRPG's evolved over time.

Last year I played through BG1 EE. Loved to see Durlag's tower again, though I remember it was harder as a child ^^. Still BG2 EE is lingering on my hard-drive. Somehow the old nostlagic-love didn't kick in when I got me the game. Maybe I just know it too much by now, I played BG2 probably more than any other game. Every pixel is like an old aquaintance ^^

Yep, recently bought the BG enhanced editions and KotOR for the iPad I got for Christmas. Can't wait to dive in once I'm done with my second playthrough of DAI ... assuming no dlc comes out in the meantime ... and assuming I'm not sucked into a third playthrough ... and as long as I'm done by March 26th when Pillars of Eternity comes out. Plus I'll need a day or two to recover from giving birth to my son which I'll be doing at the end of Feb/beginning of March.

Aargh, I'm running out of time!

I don't know if I have another BG2 playthrough in me, even though I like the game a lot.  Maybe if I combed through the internet and found the right mods.

I plan to play DA2 soon, but after that I intend to play through the kotor games again.  I might also go through Jade Empire too, especially since I never actually finished that game.    If I can get IWD1 and 2 to work with the character mod installed I might give that a shot too since I never got very far at all in either of those games.  I have a harder time when I have to start a DnD game from level 1.

You sound like a power-gaming mom haha. Pillars of Eternity is a title I'm really looking forward to. Divinity Original Sin is fantastic especially if you like the old isometric RPG's of old, but it doesn't hold my attention as well as Baldur's Gate. The gameplay in DOS is much better, but I tend to like the world and characters in the BG series to a much higher degree. World and and well written characters make a game for me. Pillars of Eternity is looking good too. Can't wait to give it a try!

37 runs of Origins here (all DLC included), 26 of DA2 (all DLC included) and counting.

I go back to play the Bioware classics once in a while because they are very, very good unlike DA:I.

A lot of their older games from what I've played follows along the same formula and the newer games still borrow heavily from it, having every game essentially being you going around with companions making choices in a story heavy setting.

The combat changed around quite a bit. Baldur's Gate I found to be clunky and outdated but I could put up with it. KotoR was the worst of any BioWare game in my opinion, and I would rather spam Spirit Blade to win in Inquisition. Jade Empire has some interesting ideas in there but it's rough around the edges.

The original Mass Effect was probably my favourite, but then I prefer sci-fi over fantasy =P

Haha, I'm the opposite in that I tend to gravitate towards fantasy settings more than sci-fi. Baldur's gate combat system does seem outdated, but seeing how it was created over 15 years ago, I can understand why. Not to mention its based on 2nd edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons rules that essentially leaves sprites standing and swinging blades at each other until one of them hits the other. Pissing contests can be a little more entertaining. However, I do like knowing all of the math behind the combat.

Anyways, just making conversation here.

I never had a problem with kotor's combat back in the day, but I do remember it feeling ...weird last time I tried to play.

I remember it being weird too. I think it was the fact that you could pause combat, but you didn't have a typical action bar. Instead, you had a mini menu that popped above the enemy's head and you had to cycle through tiny windows until the ability you wanted to use showed up. It was awkward imo. It made me miss the radial menu from NWN1.

I had just finished another playthrough of the Mass Effect series when Inquisition came out. I promptly bought it, played through it once, then stuck it back on the shelf. I then proceeded to boot up Neverwinter Nights and start a new playthrough of Hordes of the Underdark.

For some reason, Icewind Dale is still my favourite of that era.  Couldn't even get myself to finish the mod "BG2-Redux"  that faithfully recreated Chapter 1 (so the entire first few hours of the game) using the DA:O Eclipse engine.  A truly amazing mod, and obviously a labour of love.  But defeating Irenicus just doesn't hold my attention (or affection) the way saving Kuldahar does.  Call me sentimental.  Or weird.  :P

YES.

Well, actually I'm still on my first playthrough (late to the party as always) and halfway through ToB. What a game.

I don't wanna call it nostalgic because I'd like to think that isometric view et al. had a future (preferably a bright one). I know innovations are good and BG was far from perfect but it just worked.

Animations were also really clunky, despite how much I loved it.
