For some reason, Icewind Dale is still my favourite of that era.  Couldn't even get myself to finish the mod "BG2-Redux"  that faithfully recreated Chapter 1 (so the entire first few hours of the game) using the DA:O Eclipse engine.  A truly amazing mod, and obviously a labour of love.  But defeating Irenicus just doesn't hold my attention (or affection) the way saving Kuldahar does.  Call me sentimental.  Or weird.  :P

I'll be playing Icewind Dale for the first time with the Enhanced Edition. I heard the game has the best setting overall and the interface is much better than others. I'm excited to give it a go!

Icewind Dale is hack and slash of sorts, but if you managed to like Inquisition you can stand IWD

That rather depends on why you liked Inquisition. I love DAI largely because of the characters, story and exploration, and Icewind Dale is rather weak in those areas. The basic plot is OK, but there are no companions and very little character interaction. Progression through the game areas is completely linear. I enjoyed playing it with the NPCs mod, but it's still by far my least favourite of the Infinity Engine games. (I think the sequel has a much better story.)

IWD is a very mechanical RPG. There is almost no noteworthy instance of character interaction and the narrative is, to me, utterly forgettable.

Inquisition, as combat-heavy as it may be, tries to be a completely different game. Interactivity through dialogue is this game's strongest point, I would personally say.

There is nothing like this in Inquisition... oh... you mean those few hours among the hundreds you spend doing mindless stuff? Ah yeah, forgot about those sorry. So as I was saying, if you managed to like Inquisition you can play IWD. You can like Inquisition for the interaction yes, but if you manage to bear the mindless grinding/fetching/picking/and so on you can whistand anything they throw at you, IWD feels like a breeze in the summer. Seriously how many hours does it take to finish the game? Somewhere between 1/10 to 1/4 of Inquisition boring stuff at most.

Yep, IWD is also terribly linear and after the first run it's all very predictable. I remember spending more time creating the party than actually playing the game. Interactivity through dialogue in DAI shines and I always discover something new through it.

Generally speaking, imo, the characters interaction with IQ and among themselves is the strongest point in DAI.

Good to hear! I just started a brand new BGEE run with an elf Fighter/Mage. Just about to leave Friendly Arm Inn and head to Beregost. I'm going to play through the entire saga.

The strangest thing is, I find a little more enjoyment with the 15 year old, 2D game than I do with most modern RPG's. I like DA:I, but I got to a point where it became a little stale. With BGEE, there are nights I go to bed later than usual because I cannot stop playing!

Ahhhh, the classics!

Whilst waiting for DA:I to come out I did a full run-through of BG1 and BG2 Enhanced editions.

Sure, the animation is antediluvian ... but the opportunities for really getting into your role play are exceptional. The willingness to suspend disbelief is much stronger in BG than in DA:I (although DA:O was another kettle of fish)

PS another way of looking at it is that "nostalgia isn't what it used to be...."

Yeah that 10% of the game is amazing. The other 90% however...
There is no use in talking about the good parts of Inquisition when so little time is spent in it, 6 hours of main story, 6 hours of banter (there is a complete banter video on youtube) and perhaps 6 hours of companion quests, 18 hours of something interesting rest is more mechanical and less interesting than IWD. So if you can take 100 hours of Inquisition **** you can take multiple playthroughs of Icewind Dale.

...Unless you don't find the rest of Inquisition to be terrible drudgery.

Anyway, there are mods out there for IWD and IWD2 that add premade characters that you can choose.  I've never gotten around to playing through more than a few hours of either game so I can't comment on the quality of those NPCs, but they do talk to you and I think they banter with each other as well.  It's something to look into if you want to revisit those games but don't want to deal with the lack of character interaction.

I don't know about that. It has many flaws, but at the same time.... I notice that finding the most comfortable for you way to play this game goes a long way. My first DAI pt  was rather short and all DAI's problems were glaring at me, still there were things that made me want to play it for a second time. I approached the game differently and it was much more fulfilling. I'm thinking about a third run now because there are still things I want to explore and see.

I definitely didn't play that much Icewind Dale.

Yeah, great. Played Origins more then 20 times, and I'm still playing, funny how a good game works right? Still doing different playthroughs, class/racepecialization combinations and so on... Different builds WOW... back then there were builds oh god how much I miss them...

Edit: I am not defending IWD, but it is less bad than Inquisition. Stats. Feats. Skills. Perfect. Everything a RPG must have. Story is for books and movies.

Good no, delicious. Would have been better if I died before seeing Inquisition. If they ever make a time machine, please, kill me before November 18th 2014. Inquisition is worse than death, by far.

Or maybe you could move on instead of being the usual drama queen.

I really loved bg when it came out, many good memories from that game, now I find that it aged too bad for me to play.

Yeah because you're not exclusively only about stats, feats and skills. You have other joys in a game like story and characters. Why should I move on from the only thing that makes me happy? Is there any reason at all to abandon the only thing that gives me joy? Not that I care if you think so.

I get that DA:I is not you cup of tea. But saying stuff like "Inquisition is worse than death, by far", you can't really expect to be taken very seriously, do you?

Are you forced to play this game? Yeah, I didn't think so either.

Play DAO to your heart's content but if you are expecting stuff like stats, feats and skills in the next Bioware games... well, good luck with that.

Now now, let's not have another unnecessary squabble over opinions. Don't like the game? Don't play it. Have ideas on what would make it better? Feedback forums. Love playing another game and can't stop praising it? Go to that game's forums. Let's have fun, civilized chats shall we?

Lol...what? Story is the basis upon which any of this crap matters. DA:O is certainly not best known for its gameplay mechanics. I must say, it jiggers the imagination that anyone plays any Dragon Age game with no concern for stories whatsoever.

I'm currently playing the BG saga on my phone. Just going to Suldanesselar after Irenicus and then it's TOB time.

I've played BG1 and 2 like 10 times but never actually the while of TOB. Only until halfway mark or so. Every time something has came up and I've uninstalled the game. Not this time though. Kinda anxious to finally beat the game proper like 15 years after I first played it.

Playing a chaotic neutral Half-Orc Fighter/Thief with a good party.

I am all about not civilized as you see, I'm here just to take revenge on Bioware, so no. But keep going productively or whatever you think is good.
