Lol...what? Story is the basis upon which any of this crap matters. DA:O is certainly not best known for its gameplay mechanics. I must say, it jiggers the imagination that anyone plays any Dragon Age game with no concern for stories whatsoever.

Gameplay mechanics is the only thing Bioware games have from BG to DA2. Now with DAI they have nothing. As I have said in one million posts I love boring combat, it is the perfection for me, it is everything I loved in their games. They got rid of stats and boring, the only good things in their games. Now I have to jump, roll, move with WASD and **** like this, if I liked this **** I would be playing GTA, Assassin's Creed or whatever action **** there.

I am all about not civilized as you see, I'm here just to take revenge on Bioware, so no.

At least for the sake of entertaining me (further), could you put a little more effort into the revenge thing? Because it's kind of tepid right now. :(

D&D mechanics have never worked very well with computer games and ditching them with origins was one of the best things bioware could ever have done. Sadly it went downhill from there.

I also like what they did for BG1 in terms of classes and specializations as well as new armor and weapon additions. Essentially, you can pick classes that were only available in BG2 back in the day. I can finally dual wield long swords while slinging spells!

You could just have used TuTu. That's what I do.

I've never actually played Baldur's Gate 1 or 2 before. *ducks* I know, I know, but this thread inspired me to purchase the enhanced edition from gog, and holy shizz did BioWare used to make games that were actually hard. BG makes DA:I seem like a walk in the park by comparison.  *turns BG down to easiest setting and not ashamed at all*

Ranged weapons. Do not be afraid of them. That was a huge mistake I made. Also, doing the main quest in one quick shot might be difficult, as you'll become underleveled quite quickly. Try to get a bit of exploration/side quests completed along the way to help on the XP front.

Yep I am currently playing through Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition and loving it. It is such a good game! I did download a mod for extra npc interactions so they are on par with BG2 and it is incredibly well done. I also love the new characters the enhanced edition introduced. Will definitely play BG2 Enhanced Edition after this. Very fun :)

I still love DAI, but I am holding off playing again until they fix the anorexic, broken armed, tiny chested male elves for my next play through.

I would highly recommend BG1 and 2 Enhanced Editions to anyone that hasn't tried them. They are great :)

I played the hades out of BG and BG2 back in the day. I can't stand them anymore. The terrible AD&D game mechanics. The beyond awful pathfinding. Combat, well what can you even say it is terrible. Ahh yes, inventory micromanagement of arrows and not just having to buy them having to make sure that they move into the quiver so you don't run out mid combat. Good times. Really most of the things that the DA series has done away or fixed are the worst parts of the BG series. Even DAO's combat looks brilliant after working through the BG series.

I prefer not having my memories of older games spoiled by going back to them, although i will make an exception for the Homeworld series remaster

Ranged weapons do seem to be the way to go. I find myself envious of Garrick and his crossbow, although it is annoying having to remember to equip him with arrows. When Imoen first ran out of arrows, I had no idea. I was just like why isn't she doing anything? lol. Then I figured it out. Yeah, I rolled Sorcerer with a quarterstaff, probably not the easiest first character, but what can I say? I love playing mage types. Oh, and I'm definitely focusing on doing the side quests. Is it sad that the side quests in BG are more interesting than most of the ones in DA:I?

As to the side quests that is a matter of taste. I played BG many times for me the side quests in DAI are on par with the side quests in BG1.

That's the thing that confuses me most - the idea that BG1 was any different. If anything the DA:I sidequests have more dialogue and interaction, with maybe a few notable exceptions in BG1 that are still inferior to the companion quests/MQ.

@OP:

I've tried to get back into the BG series last year but found that I couldn't. I got so used to seeing more details of my characters that I find it hard to adapt to this kind of presentation. It's not the perspective but the low details. Newer games using a similar design use higher-res graphics. Also, BG1 had its tedious parts, just as DAI has. The similarities are actually quite interesting. I wonder if the next DA game will be as much of an improvement as BG2 was over BG1. Among other things, IMO BG2 got the balance between free exploration and story perfectly right.

So instead of rolling a twenty sided die and calling it a hit if roll > thac0 + armour class, you now roll a hundred sided die and call it a hit if roll < hitchance * 100.

Yes, I can see why they had to change it, because thac0 system was so much worse.

The beyond awful pathfinding.

Beamdog has fixed/significantly improved this with the latest ee patch.

I will admit that it took a little adjusting to get back into the BG series. I got used to the gorgeous graphics of DA:I and even Divinity Original Sin. For whatever reason, when the 2D world popped up on my screen, I was taken aback and almost wrote it off as too far gone to be good. A little voice in my head said, "this is a great game and you need to give it a try."

After hours of playing, I realized I got so drawn into the world and the characters that I almost forgot everything was in 2D. Suddenly the graphics didn't really matter much and I found myself enjoying a 15 year old game far more than most recent RPG's. I guess my biggest wish would be to have a rich game like BG1 and BG2 done with an updated graphics engine. I'm thinking that would be an instant RPG classic in the making!

I believe both are similar. Both games have a lot of open spaces to explore and sometimes without much content. However, I like the NPC's that deliver side quests a little more in BG1 more than the ones in DA:I. They seem to have more personality. There's nothing like helping a dwarf recover his cloak that was stolen by a group of tasloi....in Cloakwood. Or returning a demon's (disguised as a child) pet dire wolf by carrying a rather unusual chew toy (body part from a corpse). Or rescuing a damsel in distress that is trapped within a Knoll stronghold and you're called to join forces with a large man and his space hamster to accomplish this.

Not to mention the epicness of brothers Noober and Neeber. Nearly on par with Sandal's ENCHANTMENT!

Oh gosh. "Heya." Three seconds go by, "heya."

My first play through, I didn't realize you received experience for letting him annoy you, so I did him in and did Nashkel a favor.
