I've been using Cass as my warrior, and bringing another mage when I close a bunch of rifts, but I noticed her Spell Purge doesn't always work.  Is it something you direct toward a target, like the mage does with Dispel, or does she have to be standing within a certain radius of the demon portal?

It's AoE around her. The area of effect is large. Usually if you place her between two spawn points, she'll dispel both in one cast.
