I am currently itching for a good space sim or sci-fi 4x strategy game. I have recently played the RTS game 'Grey Goo' and it got me wondering if there is anything like that on a larger scale.

I know that there are several titles where a Von Neumann machine, or an organic Hive Fleet is a specific event or NPC antagonist, but does anyone know of any games or mods of games that have these things in a playable fashion?

I'm not talking about a species of robots or an insect species that operate just like your standard 4x faction; not an alien bee people that build bee looking spaceships. I mean a completely organic species; even their spacecraft are living creatures; something like the Tyranid Hive Fleet from WH40K, or an interstellar version of the Grey Goo from the game of the same name.

I came to this thread...

But I was disappointed when I realized Von Neumann didn't make nuclear bombs.

Galactic Civilizations.

You can grab GalCiv2 ultimate edition for twenty bucks on Steam, or if you're not averse to early access games, GalCiv3 for 45 bucks.

Does Galactic Civilizations have a Von Neumann-esque or Tyranid-like race as a playable faction?

I saw it pop up a couple times on Steam, but I never really looked to much into it.

The Yor are a synthetic civilization that hates organics but still requires organic nutrition (something they aren't exactly grateful about), but do not fit into the Von-Neumann category, at least as far as I would draw the line.

Don't know the Warhammer 40K universe enough to really say something about Tyranids.

With the Tyranid angle I was looking for a race that uses absolutely no technology. Everything from their weapons and ammo to their space ships and interstellar travel is achieved with organic lifeforms.

If you find one that is actually decent please let us (mostly me) know.

I know Endless Legends has a race like the one you're looking for, but it isn't set in space.

I was afraid of this. From the looks of it there aren't any interstellar 4x games or space sims that have either of these two troupes as playable options. I was hoping someone at the BSN would be able to point me in the right direction.  :(

I have done some research on my own and the closest thing to a self-replicating machine faction that I have been able to find is the Loa from Sword of the Stars 2: The End of Flesh. As far as a purely organic Tyranid-like species though, I don't see anything. The closest I have been able to find is the 4X standard insectoid race that has a high reproduction rate and is very industrious, but they build colonies and spacecraft just like any other faction.

Hmm. The Beast from Homeworld: Cataclysm seems like it would kinda fit in the organic space faring faction.

I would be interested in trying them out, but does anyone know if the Beast will be included in the Homeworld: Remastered game coming out in February?
