This is my second playthrough on Nightmare.  First was a KE mage, and now I'm playing a rogue archer with Artificer subclass.  I'd like to start knocking over some dragons now that I'm level 13.

Currently I'm using the Bane of Red Crossing for a bow, but I could also purchase the Grunsmann from Bonnie.  I have access to the masterwork schematic from the inquisition perks, and some everite and great bear pelts, if necessary.  I have the Superb ring of Critical Damage.

Even though I'm an archer, I took a few perks from the dagger tree to get access to that boost to your crit chance by flanking.  I have all the necessary perks from the Artificer tree.

During my first playthrough on NM I became well acquainted with the benefits of having warriors get in close and hammer away, especially Blackwall.  When I did it the first time, I was a KE, so I simply kept myself and Blackwall swimming in barrier.  It was slow, and not very flashy, but got the job done.

1.  As an archer, I can see the great DPS I'm getting, so I'm wondering, should I just have Blackwall and Viv go in the way I did in my first playthrough, and then take care of myself using things like Evade to dodge?  I don't mind some use of the tac cam, but I'm not sure I'd have the patience to micromanage the whole fight unless I have to.

2.  Should I be seeking out items to give me higher resistance to whatever the dragon is dealing (elements)?

If anyone has any suggestions for some unique weapons or items that I should seek out before getting to work, let me know.  I have access to most of the areas.  In terms of my story quest, I just need to meet Hawke in the WA, and then start the Abyss.

Thanks.

Blackwall and Viv should be fine on their own for the most part; you may have to micromanage Viv a bit to keep her in melee range and make sure she's using spirit blade.  As an archer just make sure to always position yourself on the dragon's side and close but not too close (close enough to be inside his whirlwind but not close enough to get kicked).  Craft resistance armor for Blackwall and craft resistance tonics for everyone, which resistance obviously depends on which dragon.

Also, I haven't used him myself but I've heard Iron Bull properly specced with a good weapon and some guard on hit shreds dragons to pieces.

Melee fighters tend to fare better against dragon's than ranged, and since Viv, Blackwall and Bull would all be clumped together on the dragon you'll get more barrier uptime on everyone.  Just make sure any melee that isn't directly tanking is attacking his hind legs, so they won't be near the dragon's breath attack.  May not be a great idea on the Dragons with the Lightning rings, though.  For those dragons you just need to watch for the Dragon's visual cue on when he's going to cast it and make sure you have a Barrier and Dispel saved for the occasion.

Also, if you want to just flat out cheese the dragons for a fast kill use this combination of abilities.  Mark of the Rift, Mark of Death, Flask of Fire and Thousand Cuts.  Flask of Fire lets you spam thousand cuts for 8 seconds without using up focus and Mark of Death basically doubles the damage you do in that span when you activate it.  Since you went Artificer that'll mean no Mages, but if you have good enough gear and you do it right the dragon won't survive long enough to matter.

I'm a DW Assassin in my playthrough and I did the first 4 dragons legit on Nightmare, but now Sera and I are just cheesing them to death to save time.  My gears good enough to down Dragons pretty easy anyways, and once you've killed a few dragon's you've killed them all.  The encounters don't seem to get much different.
