I'm sorry but this has to be said. I love Bioware's games, I enjoy Dragon Age, I adore Mass Effect, and I Think some of their games actually qualify as phenomenal (and MDK2 will always be special to me
).
However, for a developer that makes games this awesome, they also seem prone to making some of the most monumentally STUPID decisions/omissions on the planet, and one of those is the complete and utter lack of interesting hairstyles for both female and male protagonists in their games.
When I first played Mass Effect, I forgave it for having nothing but cheesy 60's-80's hairstyles, as ME was largely a homage to that era's Sci Fi. When I played ME2, however, I was actually annoyed that they hadn't added any new hairstyles whatsoever to reflect the sequel's different tone. Before ME3 I thought to myself "They must be adding new hairstyles to ME this time. I mean, BIoware can't be that stupid/lazy....". Well, they did add some new hairstyles - about 3 or 4, most of which looked exactly the same as each other and were largely uninspiring.
When I recently started playing the Dragon Ages, I shouldn't have been surprised that Origins not only also contains a lacklustre range of hairstyles, but that they seem to be carbon copies of the hairstyles in ME. For DA2 the only decent hairstyle is unique to the default female Hawke.
And what annoys me even more is that out of the handful of hairstyles that are already there, about 5 of them look exactly the same! How many pulled-back pony tail/bun styles do you need? I find I often end up giving my PC a shaved head just because it's the closest thing to a short punkish look (yes, I am that weird). I've only dabbled at playing as a male Shepard, but one thing I couldn't get over was how almost all Male Shepard's hairstyles look identical.
Dragon Age Inquisition appears to have slightly more and varied styles than any previous Bioware game, so kudos for that - but it could still be a lot better.
I think the thing I find most ridiculous about this in these games is is that there are actually other hairstyles in the games on NPC's - but they're not available to Shepard/Hawke/Warden/Inquisitor. I mean, the styles are there, just sitting there, would it really kill Bioware to just let us have access to them for our PC? It's not like it would take any extra work on Bioware's part. I mean it is ridiculous how people have to mod their saves in something like Gibbed in order to do this.
Anyway, rant over. I would like to see some more hairstyles in these games, please, I suppose is what I was trying to say.
