Hi, during cut scenes on my desktop my screen occasionally flickers. I've tried updating my graphics card and disabled various graphics settings to no avail. Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can fix it? Here are my pc specs
AMD 3.0ghz Athlon x2
6GB DDR2 Ram
Nvidia 1GB 250 GTS

EDIT: Solved by buying a new graphics card.

Without any real information, it could be any number of things.

Power issue perhaps?

This only happens in ME2 though? Have you tried other games?

It only happens in mass effect 2, and it's not the monitor itself flickering the game flashes to a black screen every so often, and I doubt it's a power issue because I can be looking a the exact same thing at the exact same angle without any flickering. It only happens during cut scenes.

I get this too. Also NVidia. Something similar happened to me with Dragon Age, but I switched off phsx and it was fine. I still have phsx off so I'm not sure what it is this time.

1.      Which Game Are You Playing
Mass Effect 2
a.      Since this forum is for both ME1 (PC) and ME2 (PC) it’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.

b.     Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor)
Physical Disk, Gamestop
c.      Configuration Utility | Game Tab
Version Information: MassEffect2.EXE
1.00
2.      System Details

a.      Configuration Utility | Summary Tab
Processor / Clock Speed / RAM                                               AMD Athlon X2 / 3.0ghz / 6GB
Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help)                                                    Nvidia 250 GTS / 1GB/ 196.21Sound Adapter / Driver Version
Realtek ALC888 / 6.0.1.5969
b.     Configuration Utility | Platform Tab
Operating System (& service pack if applicable)Widnows 7 64 Bit
Direct X VersionDirect X 10.0
3.      Problem Details

a.      When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions. Who? What? When? Where?
Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

b.     What? What is the nature problem that you’re seeing?
Black flicker during cut scenes
c.      When? When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only
after so many hours of play?
During Cut Scenes
d.     Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does
it occur everywhere?
''
e.     Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?
Disabled every graphic setting, problem persists.

I have flickering as well. It doesn't seem to happen every time, it usually starts after I've just loaded a save if I've already been playing. It's most obvious in the menus but not so good in gameplay either.

I updated my graphics drivers to try and help - which caused the program not to load anymore. I reinstalled and it didn't help, still not loading (I had kept my saved games and settings.) Then I deleted all the save games (bleh) and settings and reinstalled again with both discs in my drives (as the forum suggested elsewhere) and it finally started up again. I was able to get my saves back from a backup (yay)

But I still have flickering. So the graphics card update and all the reinstalling didn't really help. I've tried tweaking every other setting in game, but it seems like for now I'll just have to hope it doesn't happen too often and restart the program when it starts happening again?

I have exactly the same problem. Most often during cutscenes (especially any conversation with the Elusive Man), but sometimes in certain areas while moving around (In the trial chamber at the migrant fleet is terrible). Once something triggers it, it seems to persist even after leaving the area that started it.

Every second or so I either get a black frame or the frame will appear to "jump" down around 4 inches on the screen. When this happens the game also pauses for around 100 milliseconds or so.

I find that alt-tabbing seems to sometimes clear it up for a little while, as though some thing is being "reset", but it doesn't last if I am in area that seems to cause it.

Turning off graphics options doesn't seem to make it better.

I have never had any problems with any other game, including Dragon Age, which has always performed flawlessly.

I am at work, so I don't have all the details of my machine. This is what I can remember off of the top of my head:

Intel Core 2 Duo 6600.

ATI Radeon 4870X2

4G of memory

Playing at 1920x1200.

I've noticed it seems to happen less frequently at 720 resolution

Well, I'm feeling a little silly right now. I got home, opened up my PC, took out my graphics card, blew out any dust, slotted it back in and left the case open.

Fixed! No more flicker. It looks like ME2 really does drive my card harder than any other game I have.

I think this is due to overheating of the graphics card (which is why dust-off might occasionally work).

I'm also having this problem (for both ME1&2 and a host of other games), so I'm going to try and replace the stock cooling fan off the VGA or otherwise upgrade to a "cooler" graphics card. I've heard that many of the older NVIDIA cards run hot, including my GeForce 7900 GT.

SpeedFan tells me the it's 53-57 deg idle, and in the 80's during the game.

Give a full error report as per the "Read First" thread and we may be able to help pinpont the problem. Without knowing the full specs ofyour system, including drivers, then we cant help.

It turns out my graphics card was defective. I started experiencing similar issues but only with certain games. (Left 4 dead 2 and Crysis 2) It was never much of a problem so I just ignored it until Crysis 2 came out. Then the flickering was so prevalent I felt like I was developing epilepsy. Trust me save yourself the hassle and get a new graphics card. I went through pretty much every google result and if you're expierencing the same flickering as I was just buy a new graphics card.I suggest XFX which comes with a lifetime warranty in case it ever happens again. :-D
