So sorry for your loss, you're right you can never replace Madam Lilly, but as Forsythia77 said you could make a new friend. There are lots of cats in rescue centres who would love a new forever home.
Madam Lilly was a rescue cat, so I've had some experience on that score. Still it's still a bit too raw at the moment to think about. Give me a few months, or maybe a year, and I may feel differently about replacing her

I wouldn't call it replacement. You'll never be able to replace her. But there are so many other cats out there that need homes. And eventually you'll be ready for a new friend.
Mine is a rescue, too. We were just walking through the shelter, and she meowed at me... and grabbed my sleeve. Like hooked it.. and wouldn't let go 
I was trapped essentially. It took a bit of coaxing, and detangling before they could unhook her from me. But I went home with a cat! I like to think she chose us... 'I like those humans. They're mine!'
Sheba (a solid black domestic short hair) likes to sit on my lap while I'm gaming. Or if not that she likes to find a way to put her butt in my face. LOL!

Haha, ja men faktiskt, det gör dem Våra katter "döptes" aldrig, vi satt inte och valde namn, de bara kom. Den äldsta hittade vi ute och vi skulle bara ta hand om honom tills ägaren hörde av sig och man måste ju kalla dem någonting, första kvällen låg han i soffan och smygfes för att därefter springa och gömma sig xD Så, "Fisen" blev det och efter ett par veckor när vi insåg att ingen skulle hämta honom, ja då gick det ju inte att döpa om honom

"Fisen", så sött namn! Gösta var "planerad" så brorsan och jag hade tid att brainstorma namn. Vi kom på en hel lista bl a Sverker, Göte och Gunnar men när jag såg honom så blev det Gösta, han såg ut som en Gösta!

This is so true! you can never replace a cat, however i believe all cats are unique individuals and they will make their own story with you. Previous cats will always be apart of you! Never replaced.
I too have had experience with my previous 2 cats from rescue, and its a firm belief of mine that they should pick you and not the other way around.

I have two cats. They ALWAYS BOTH sit in front of my monitor during major battles. I consider them the ultimate bosses.
How cute. I have pet stairs that my old cats use to climb up onto my computer desk or into my lap when I'm sitting at the computer. At night, I carry the stairs to the bedroom so they can use them to climb into our bed. They are not spoiled.

Ah yes, pet stairs. My cats certainly treat me like one of those!
Seriously though, I should probably buy a few sets since the older one has arthritis. My new apartment is sleek and clean with very few spots for them to jump around.

I have two so they can keep each other company when I'm not there. I'm only out the house for about 8 hours a day anyway.
I've got one on my lap now watching the other play with a toy stuffed mouse.

Contrary to popular belief, cats are not independent at all! Mine stick to me like glue.
Be prepared to spend A LOT OF time with them if you want them to live happily.

My cat meows and chirps for a good 20 or so minutes when I come home from work. As if to chew me out for earning the money that provides her with toys and noms. Cats are hilars. Also I should say that this cat was picked by both my husband and I, but she clearly has a preference for me. My husband tries but can never quite earn all of her unadulterated love.
