On my first playthrough, on Xbox One, I was a mage.  I did a lot of crafting, and found that by the mid-to-end game, none of the rare items measured up to what I was making myself.  Either that, or I missed out on some nice swag.

I'm playing a second time, this time on PS4, as an archer.  I've been opening up areas a lot more quickly now, since I know what lies in each one.  This time, I'm getting some good mileage from rare items during my early-to-mid game.  But I keep eyeing all that sweet tier 3 and 4 crafting material, and figure I'm going to be back to crafting before long.

Here's one observation I made:  rare (purple) weapons and armor have VERY interesting added effects that I can't get on crafted ones (that I'm aware of).  Example:  Bane of Red Crossing has that nifty Immolate chance, but there's no way to get that on a crafted bow, that I can figure out.

So, what's your opinion?  Do you lean on the found items, or do you make your own custom stock?

Crafted items with tier 3 stuff and top schematics is always better, the only purple item I even keep in one of my heroes is the Dukes Bane Heavy Helmet because I could not find out the superior heavy helmet schematic.

A few suggestions of masterwork: Hidden blades on hit + guard on hit; Hidden blades on hit + shield bash on hit; if have 3 slots Hidden blades + guard + shield bash. You will never die and make a lot of damage. Hidden blades not only increase damage but also give more hits to increase the other effect so is a great masterwork effect. Shield bash on hit the tier 3 one comes from stormheart that is hard to find only in a closed map from plot have a lot of nodes so you can replace it for chain light on hit 100% from masterwork Silverites is good too but a bit weaker damage. btw and if you craft stuff with tier4 (dragon parts) they will be even better then purple stuff. You can craft items with 99% of the effects that you find in the purple items you just need farm the right masterwork material and for masterwork there is tiers as well and each material can give 2 diferents masterworks for example: masterwork silverite when you farm can give you 5 guard on hit OR 100% damage chain light 10% chance on hit. A masterwotk Obsedian for example is a tier 2 masterwork so will only give you 3 guard on hit not 5 like the tier3 silverite. Gl.

While I have issues with several aspects of DA:I, the crafting system is an absolute gem. Being able to experiment and crank out custom-built awesomeness that walks all over other stuff is IMHO the entire point of a crafting system.
