I seem to have a mental block on the perk thing. I've been saving up for the Deft Hands perk, says I need 4 "in that category". Well I have 4 Inquisition Perks but when I try to use them in Secrets, I get an error because I don't have enough perks for that category. Ok, but how do I know how many perks I have that can be applied to each category? I only see "Inquisition Perks". How many of them are for Secrets, Forces, etc. Sorry, I still don't get it.

I know I can recruit Agents, fill up influence, do missions, but how do I know how many Secrets perks are available?

Thanks

You can spend your perks in whatever category you want.

You might be trying to choose a secrets perk that requires more points in secrets than you have. It should have a little lock next to it if you can't get it yet.

When a perk has a "X perk needed" requirement, you need to have that many perk's in that specific category. Perks in other categories do not count towards that.

So in your case, your 4 perks in the "Inquisition" catagory do not count towards the requirements for Deft Hands, as Deft Hands needs 4 perks in the Secret's category.

You can tell what perks you have active in each category by going to it and looking for perks with a tick next to them - perks with a tick mean they are active and will count towards the "need X perks" requirement in that category.

This also applies to any agents you aquire - they count as perks in that category, and so count towards the "need x perks" perk requirements. So for instance - if you aquire 4 agents in the Secret's line, then you will m,eet the requirement for Deft Hands.

Agents are definitely the easiest way to fulfill perk requirements.

How do you get perks other than by acquiring agents?

Every time your influence level increases you gain a perk.  So say your influence is 3, when you go to four you'll get a perk.

And you don't get perks from acquiring agents, agents just count against the required perks in a category.  So if you need 4 points to unlock deft hands and acquire 4 agents in that category, you'll be able to unlock deft hands without spending in actual perks in that category.

I guess I should know this but I don't. How do you know which agents count against which category? Like how can I get "secrets" agents so I can finally get Deft Hands

Once you get an agent, they'll show up when viewing the perks categories under the relevant category. They'll be at the bottom of the list of perks, under each category.

You don't, of course, know ahead of time where to get agents for each category - for that knowledge, you'd have to go into spoiler territory.

I recommend picking the "Arcane knowledge" perk early on - it's in the secrets category, and all the "knowledge" perks are good to have, for the extra XP, and for some additional conversation options and quest resolution options they give. If that's the only perk you take from that category, you'll need three secrets agents to get the deft hands, fine tools perk.

You can often tell which category an agent will end up in.  If you recruit a noble and his soldiers, he'll end up in forces.  If you recruit a smuggler or a wily scout, she'll end up in secrets.  You can even determine which category a small number of agents will end up in.  Tell them to gather secrets and they'll end up in secrets.  Tell them to spread word of the inquisition and they'll end up in connections.

The above doesn't always work however.  There are some agents where I end up scratching my head after seeing which category they were assigned to.

There are a few agents that have multiple choices for categories. The guy in the tavern where you meet Speaker Anais can either go into Cullen's or Josephine's.

Bah... I told one to aid refugees because I thought it was a RP thing of some kind. I didn't even know what agents were. I think she helps Cullen now.
